I believe that the cases were this has been translated as "royalty" are just errors. I think "royalty" and "patent fee" may get mixed up quite easily, on top of that I've rarely ever heard the word "patent fee" in daily life. However "royalty" I've heard a ton of times by now, if it's not just me, that also may contribute to the confusion.

I know that this "sum-of-its-parts" approach oftentimes fails, but here it works very well in my eyes.
