Japanese teacher just taught me 穴埋め問題.

The "test" in "cloze test" is not a "test test". It's more like "memory test", which is commonly an exercise, activity, etc. (see wikipedia)
See notes at xref for my gloss rationale.

fill-in-the-blank needs to be noun-ified somehow. "activity" covers just about everything, and "fill-in-the-blank activity" is also fine in English on its own.

https://gamer2.jp/post/kosuru/

Both 1st and 2nd source note that Sense 2 has origins in comedy, but 2nd source also notes possible semantic conflation/correlation with Sense 3 (repeatedly using a joke and repeatedly hitting a button); 3rd source also mentions the modern slang usage as if it derived from the gaming sense.
  Comments:
Examples of Sense 2 interpreted into English:

ネタを擦り倒す=run a joke into the ground / milk a joke dry
伸びる方を擦る=repeat the formula of whatever goes more viral
この漫画、無限に擦れる=I could reread this manga forever (get infinite mileage/enjoyment out of it)

Sense 3 directly corresponds to the English "to mash" or "to spam".

Both of these extra senses are primarily written in kanji, as 擦る.

isn't this also used to describe a writer's/musician's/other's name used for a publication?

you can find literally thousands of examples on wikipedia, mostly artist names:
2018年から2021年まではR(あーる)名義で活動していた。
1990年にあんしんパパ名義で発売された、
旧名義は高橋 未奈美(読みは同じ)。
6枚目ベストアルバム『39 Very much』まではKinKi Kids名義。
サンタナ・ブラザーズ名義のアルバムを発表。
1970年(昭和45年)8月19日にサン化学へ名義変更した。

I'd recommend something like "name one is using" or "public name" or "published name"

兄さんが父さん名義でこの学園に支払った入学金、寄付金、年間授業料をあわせると1000万くらいは行ったらしい。 (here: using father's name)

We have the two other common collocations, but we are actually missing the most-common grammatical structure with も (see ngrams). This verb is almost exclusively used with some variant of "身の毛".

I can't find any examples of a statement like 「よだちました」 being used without a subject, and it's hard to imagine this making any sense. Rather than including "have the creeps" here, it seems more useful to delegate that sense to the xref(s).

sanoku: [おそろしさなどで]体の毛が立つ。「身の毛もー」

I grant that the wording of the kokugos seems to suggest that "弥立つ" may include the whole sentiment of "hairs standing on end due to fear", but this seems more a reflection of 弥立つ not being used *except* for this expression. If you just search for "よだつ", it's *all* some variant of the xrefs.

The pronunciation いよだつ is extremely rare(though daijs does list it). I don't know what else to tag it but maybe [ok]. The [expr] xrefs already don't include it (even though it is the same verb with the same sense). It *barely* appears in old google book references.

Sample search:
"よだつ" "site:twitter.com"

Thousands of matches, all with 毛.

if you search for いよだつ instead, you get 3 links which look like false-positives. One person does make an etymological comment in a reply to a post that uses 「身の毛がよだつとな!!」
身の毛が弥立つ(いよだつ) 『弥よ』と『立つ』 『弥よ』は『いよいよ』の『いよ』だそう。 いよいよ毛が逆立つ、と言う意味らしい。

  Comments:
There isn't a meaningful difference between わいせつ行為 and わいせつな行為. I was just noting that there's nothing in Japanese law that defines わいせつ行為 as "sexual molestation".
Most online sources only mention molestation and indecent exposure but the above definition from MEXT includes rape and prostitution.
The Japanese Law Translation website translates わいせつな行為 as "indecent act".
I think the term is broad enough in legal contexts that a second sense isn't necessary.

seems to still be used in legal/technical contexts but i'm not too familiar with how the [law] tag is used in JMdict

>"わいせつ*な*行為" does but it describes other acts besides molestation, e.g. indecent exposure.

i don't believe "わいせつな行為" and "わいせつ行為" are meaningfully different, they're e.g. used interchangeably by newspapers
indecent exposure directed at children is considered molestation, probably a good idea to add it as a gloss, but わいせつ行為 is also used for e.g. groping https://www.nagoyatv.com/news/?id=033103

>isn't the "sexual" in "sexual molestation" redundant?

i guess "molestation" has come to pretty much always mean something of a sexual nature, but it's not strictly redundant esp. in more technical/legal contexts

>I'm not sure there's more than one sense here.

the second sense is certainly more colloquial but i've seen it

The difference is that 死の組/"group of death" is not technical sports lingo. It appears in news articles aimed at the general public, but is not quite ubiquitous enough to be understood by everyone, especially without context.

I'm perfectly OK with leaving something like the expl in, I just think it's a little unnecessary. I'd be surprised if I really
understood even 1/10th of the translations for the [baseb]-tagged entries but I don't know that it's necessary to provide lengthy
explanations to each one of them because of that. If you're interested enough in sports to read a text where an expression like "死の組"
is actually used, you'll probably understand what it means, is my thinking. But if you prefer to keep it in, that's OK with me.

"cloze passage":
https://dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/ela/bank/6-12_L.VAU_Cloze_Passage.pdf
A CLOZE PASSAGE is a contextual analysis strategy that helps students learn to predict and verify
word meaning of unfamiliar words or familiar words that have new/unusual meanings by
searching for clues in nearby words, sentences, and paragraphs of a text. It is used before
reading a text.
Provide students with the passage and have students read the entire passage before they
fill in the blanks.

I preemptively trimmed this from a longer draft:

fill-in-the-blank exercise; fill-in-the-blank question; fill-in-the-blank problem; cloze test (i.e. text with words removed); cloze passage; cloze exercise; cloze deletion exercise

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloze_test
A cloze test (also cloze deletion test or occlusion test) is an exercise, test, or assessment
  Comments:
Learned this from a Japanese teacher today. Helpful for addressing the 穴埋め entry. Image search to see this is 小中高 exercises of various types.

I strongly disliked 'cloze' on the grounds that it is one specific *type* of 穴埋め. But in academia and in the language flashcard space, Cloze<->穴埋め is a common mapping, Japanese has no good equivalent to 'cloze' of its own.

That is why I think the "hint" is important. 穴埋め does not mean "cloze", but if you have an 穴埋め that consists of "text with words removed", then you have the option of using the "cloze" glosses.

Also, people obviously think "test" means 試験, and the note helps avoid that problem as well.

Google shows "cloze passage" is common verbiage, as "passages of text" is how they are commonly used.

If you want "cloze deletion" in here(popular for SRS/Anki/Flashcards) , I think it has to be as "cloze deletion test".

"fill-in-the-blank exercise" is my intuition. I think "exercise" is appropriate for these long individual problems.

There's no need for a hiragana reading. Any of the readings can be written as 成吉思汗.
We really do need a search-only tag in jmnedict. That would allow us to put all the forms in one entry.
At the moment, チンギス汗 and ジンギス汗 will have to remain separate entries.

I'm trying to sort out our messy Genghis Khan name entries. At present, we have 7 entries; 3 (or 4) with kanji forms and a total of 10 possible katakana forms, including variants and nakagura. What I propose initially is to have three kanji form entries:
- 成吉思汗/じんぎすかん
- ジンギス汗/ジンギスかん
- チンギス汗/チンギスかん
and a single entry with all the katakana forms, roughly in rfrequency order.
I'm opening this up for possible discussion, in case anyone can suggest a better alternative.

Assuming there are no issues with hidden forms in jmnedict, I'd like to propose this format for non-Japanese/Chinese names (only having the nakaguro forms visible). It's neater and it's what GG5 uses.
