I think it would probably be better to have 反覆 in a separate entry, compare Meikyo and GendaiShinkoku's version, and have sense two xref to sense one here. Maybe even with a rare tag. |
| Comments: | The two-gloss entry would be better off deleted. It's far too limiting. The only reason I don't think this entry should necessarily be deleted(falling back to a grammatical derivation) is because "appeal" is an excellent gloss, and does not fit in 面白い. "humor" is also a good noun form of "funny". reverso statistics do not support adding "humorous" directly to 面白い, probably due to register differences. "fun" appears quite a lot in reverso, but is objectively overused. I am of course open to other glosses. I think the 3-sense split is much cleaner than trying to collapse everything to 1. 2 million ngrams can support a couple of senses. |

| Comments: | This is used in figurative expressions that refer to dying at sea but I don't think it's correct to say that 藻屑 itself means "death at sea". 海の藻屑と消える and 海の藻屑となる (both in jmdict) appear to account for almost all of this figurative usage. | Comments: | we have 3 other entries with the meaning "oracle bone script". the others don't have any bracketed disambig stuff/expl's and I don't think any of them really need it either. If they should have one I think something simple like "(earliest known form of Chinese writing)" would be enough. |

| Comments: | but this is a j-e dictionary, and figuring out "what extremely common word" + "san" means should not be particularly challenging given the entries for 外人 and さん, and the gloss here is in fact copied from 外人, so it's hard to see what the entry really adds. without checking, i'd say some of those other さん entries might be able to go as well strongest argument for keeping this is that it's a politer alternative to 外人 which can sometimes be considered derogatory |
|
| 8. | D* 2019-10-17 00:49:17 | |
| Comments: | For reference, these are some "work title"+さん entries already in jmdict: お医者さん お坊さん 坊さん 大家さん お手伝いさん 按摩さん お相撲さん |
|
| 7. | D* 2019-10-17 00:40:55 | |
| Comments: | I won't belabor the point if people don't think it's necessary, but the reason I think it's worth including is because on the one hand, attaching -さん onto various things like job titles is very common (e.g. 店員さん、駅員さん、おまわりさん, etc.), but this is the _only_ common -さん construct that affixes to a -人 noun. It's not normal -さん behavior, it's not what you'd expect if you weren't already familiar with this one expression. |

Furthermore kojien, nikkoku and jitenon point out "一説に八歳以上という。", but I don't think it's really worth recording at this point. |
| Comments: | The sense split is purely pragmatic. This is overwhelmingly about noodles. Introduced to me as コシがある to describe noodles, specifically a local noodle called コシのある讃岐うどん(sanuki udon). Teacher agreed that my suggested "al dente" is probably the closest idiomatic English expression, but it would be dangerous to include. "al dente" noodles are coincidentally コシがある and vice versa, if well prepared, but the adjectives are describing different properties. Inclusion is debatable. In [cooking], after noodles, sometimes 餅, dumplings, 生地. Hair and brushes are the next common glosses. Rare, but still valid collocations include sound, fabric, and paper. In the case of paper and fabric, it seems to indicate a level of stiffness or rigidity. "firm and elastic noodles" has a surprising number of actual google results. Not a lot, but not merely a [defn]. "springy and resilient" is also the correct nuance for hair, if "having body" is a bit vague (perhaps signaling volume more than resilience). also applies to brushes without listing them explicitly. "chewy" strongly risks looking like a negative remark. An alternative to "pleasantly" would be a [note="always as a compliment/always a positive connotation"], or something like that. See コクのある for a similar entry. |
