| Comments: | My first reaction was to disagree. Daijirin, GG5 and all the other JEs put the nausea sense first. Then I looked at the Tanaka examples and 4/5 were for the irritation one and the other is ambiguous. Then I looked at a sample of the non-dictionary WWW pages, and they indicate that the irritation sense is more common. I think what you have done is most likely right. |

I said "The major references, and especially the dicitonary of law terminology, emphasize "被疑者以外の第三者".", but that's not really connected to the surrounding statement. | Comments: | I'm not seeing the "witness" sense in references. The major references, and especially the dicitonary of law terminology, emphasize "被疑者以外の第三者". I feel like GG5 lists "witness" for lack of a better term; note that GG5 and Luminous also give "unsworn witness". The closest I found was sankoku's first sense, which is phrased rather closely to "witness" in the traditional sense. I'm not strictly against including it as an additional sense, but it appears to be an outlier. Anyway, here is my attempt at glossing this entry with the references provided. |

| Comments: | We already have "witness" as a separate sense, so it doesn't seem right for it also to be listed under the "person given as a reference" sense. I could not find any backing in the dictionaries I have for the "person given as a reference" sense; they only list the "person for questioning in a criminal investigation who isn't the suspect" and "witness at a diet hearing" senses. But I haven't gone so far as to delete it entirely. |

| Refs: | Nikkokus latest example is from the end of the Edo period. The earliest example is, as the other kokugos point out as well, from ancient confucian writings of the Former Han Dynasty. Furthermore kojien, nikkoku and jitenon point out "一説に八歳以上という。", but I don't think it's really worth recording at this point. Someone who encounters this word is in all likelihood going to look it up in a large 国語辞典 or something similar anyway. No hits in any corpora, as expected. . |
