Paddy field UK / Asia / Australia The technically correct term for flooded rice cultivation. Rice paddy North America / Informal Common in casual speech; emphasizes the flooded aspect https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paddy_field A paddy field (or paddy) is a flooded field of arable land used for growing semiaquatic crops, most notably rice and taro. |
|
| Comments: | My Japanese teacher was talking about たんぼ and I did a quick lookup here mid-conversation. I then proceeded to misuse the word because it doesn't mean "farm". Was corrected quite thoroughly: "only rice". (she was talking about frogs croaking loudly in rice paddies at night). As an American, I'd actually list "rice paddy" first for flavor, while finding "paddy field" totally unfamiliar. "rice field", if gemini is to be believed, is safe worldwide, and is the most common reverso gloss. |

I'd argue it's a better translation than "admittance of foreign nationals" here. so it's not particularly obscure or odd I don't think? |

| Refs: | Follow the link for a reasonably detailed response, if interested: Is the use of "squad depth" marked when discussing sports in the United States? Yes, the phrase "squad depth" is somewhat "marked" in the United States, meaning it sounds slightly foreign or specifically British to an American ear. While it is perfectly understandable, it is not the primary way Americans describe a team's reserves. https://gemini.google.com/share/d76f57eebb49 In American sports (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL), the terminology usually shifts depending on the specific sport: 1. The Standard American Terms "Roster Depth": This is the most direct equivalent to "squad depth." It refers to the quality of the entire list of players signed to the team. "Bench Depth": Very common in basketball and baseball. It refers specifically to the quality of the players who do not start the game. ... |
|
| Comments: | I wasn't going to say anything, but I actually had a dream/nightmare about this. "Squad depth" is, if technically comprehensible, quite unusual in American English. "practice squad" is a term, but outside of that we don't use "squad" that much to begin with for sports teams. I don't like leading with a term that would be awkward in AmE if there is a neutral alternative. If a "deep talent pool" is sufficiently generic, that seems better, even if its nobody's favorite. This would be a great candidate for marking regional variations on the English gloss side. It would arguably be worth noting the sports as well. i.e.: having a deep bench (esp. baseball, basketball) having squad depth (esp. soccer, (association) football) You basically have to be a native speaker to have any chance with these glosses. |
