| Refs: | https://chatgpt.com/share/694a29d6-94e4-8008-84da-11affdde11a8 1. Did Japanese ever naturally use テンション = mental strain? Not really. Unlike the physics sense, which had a stable technical niche, the psychological “strain” sense: was imported conceptually from English appeared sporadically in: * translations * academic or pseudo-academic prose * non-native or heavily Westernized writing * never fully entered everyday Japanese never replaced 緊張, which already did the job perfectly So there is no historical stage where: テンション = 心理的緊張 was normal, idiomatic Japanese and then later disappeared. Without that “normal → obsolete” lifecycle, archaic is the wrong diagnosis. ... 4. Better labels (lexicographically honest) Depending on your tagging system, better options are: [rare] [non-idiomatic] [translationese] [foreign-influenced] [academic / calque] ==== A 1990 reader would interpret テンションが高まる as “mental strain” only if: The text is: academic / clinical / translated clearly influenced by English or German The surrounding vocabulary strongly primes strain: 神経 緊迫 ストレス 心理的負荷 The author is not writing idiomatic Japanese, but mapping a foreign conceptual framework. A native author writing naturally in 1990 would still choose: 緊張が高まる 精神的緊張が強まる 不安が増す |
|
| Comments: | I just cannot find any evidence at all for the "mental strain" sense(I don't mean from LLMs, I mean from anywhere, and I have tried). [dated] suggests to me that at least some older Japanese people would understand [3] in context. But I have been unable to find any such examples. [dated] also admits the possibility at テンションが上がる might be ambiguous in meaning in a 30 year old text. That does not appear to be the case either. chatgpt also disliked "anxiety" when I was doing the edit. This is a direct translation out of daijs: 精神的な緊張。また、不安。 Chatgpt thinks this is a very narrow, specific type of anxiety. But ultimately I couldn't confirm any nuance for [3] because there are no examples of [3] anywhere. This seems like one of those "direct translation from the dictionary" glosses that are notoriously imprecise. LLM analysis is of course not definitive. But unless anyone can find any evidence to the contrary (I could not), [rare] seems like better guidance to me. |

| Comments: | If not [psych], then [rare] is surely accurate. I tried the usual book searches, logical collocated keyword searches, etc. I begged my LLMs to find me a single example of [3], and they simply told me it's essentially never used with this meaning in modern Japanese. Absent evidence to the contrary, [rare] seems safe and preferable. I guess I only gave the nod to [psych] at all in deference to daijs. I'll be more careful about that. |

| Comments: | Can't have an xref since we don't have an entry for お呉れる. I think I've heard it maybe once or twice somewhere, I can't recall exactly where but I think it was in an anime. [dated] seems reasonable. Maybe having a note like [note="primarily used in written language or as role language"] would be helpful (We have an entry for 役割語). Its similarity to several other constructions can be confusing: is it something to do with ておく? Is it connected with 遅れる (to be late)? Is it a kana form of the set expression 手遅れ (be too late)? Is it a mistyped version of 手をくれ? In fact, it is none of these - it is a 'softened' form of the てくれる form, used as an imperative. The 〜てくれる form is used to indicate receiving something, so the imperative form 〜てくれ effectively means 'give me ~' or 'do ~ for me'. However, since that sounds somewhat abrupt, the お is used in a similar way as the honorific お in おみせ 店 to 'soften' the sound a little and make it a little less harsh. |
|
| Comments: | The structure of this entry mirrors お出で[2], and I think the grammar is related. Also matches およし a little bit, but this entry is far more useful. Encountered in a folk talk. "(please) Kindly take care of the kids (for me)". 子供を可愛がってやっておくれ I wouldn't suggest if this was general grammar, but this seems like a relatively special/fossilized usage of the verb 呉れる in particular. As noted in the refs, confusion over encountering おくれ is a common experience. Would be helpful if a search for "おくれ" turned up something definitive. Japanese teacher says well-understood, old-timey feel. Maybe her grandparents might have used it. Ref notes: "〜ておくれ can sound a bit emotional, tender, or even desperate, depending on the context." "Outside of literature, drama, or songs, hearing someone use おくれ in everyday conversation would feel old-fashioned. " That said, it seems used a lot on twitter, perhaps playfully. Several hits *per hour*. Don't know if it's a revival from mass-media, or if it never went away. https://x.com/search?q="見せておくれ"&src=typed_query&f=live https://x.com/search?q="やっておくれ"&src=typed_query&f=live |
