| Comments: | I'd ask that you reconsider giving dictionary end-users the option of an [expl] gloss. You might be familiar with "salad oil", but we Americans are not(LLMs concur, it's not just me).
I did not offer "vegetable oil" as a definition, I offered it as a gloss. The most likely reason to need to translate サラダ油 is in a recipe. And in a recipe, I would *never* recommend "salad oil" as a translation. If for no other reason, an American wouldn't know what to buy("salad oil" is not on store shelves, and we do not use this term). They'd be set off on a quest to figure out what salad oil is.
The "definition" I've suggested here is usable as-is as a gloss:
Recipe:
2 cups: flour
2 cups: water
1/2 cup: canola or other neutral-flavored vegetable oil
or maybe:
1/2 cup: Japanese salad oil (or other neutral vegetable oil, such as canola)
etc.
See the reverso ref for 21 more examples (all recipes directions).
It's not the most common translation on reverso. "Salad oil" is. That doesn't change the fact that "salad oil" has fallen away in AmE use.

| Refs: | https://copykat.com/what-is-salad-oil/ If you’ve ever encountered “salad oil” in vintage recipes or family cookbooks and wondered what exactly to use, you’re not alone. This generic term has confused home cooks for generations, https://www.reddit.com/r/Cooking/comments/3zxuac/what_is_salad_oil/ I was looking at this recipe and I noticed it called for salad oil. What does that mean? I've never heard of a bread recipe calling for salad oil before. Are they asking for something flavorful like extra virgin olive oil? https://www.facebook.com/groups/186075975208545/posts/1366032807212850/ I am on a mission to use my late grandmothers Good Housekeeping recipe book from the 50's. ... They also say to use 'salad oil" a lot, I mean a lot. What the heck is salad oil, I assume vegetable oil but not sure. https://thejapanesefoodlab.com/traditional-tempura-oil/ As misleading as it sounds, salad oil (サラダ油) is actually a highly refined blend of vegetable oils that give the oil an extremely neutral profile and light viscosity. Because of that, it’s marketed as light enough to use as salad dressing, hence its name. Note the pronunciation as well: "abura" https://www.youtube.com/shorts/skQaKq5Hhaw how do you say "vegetable" in Japanese? yasai and oil? abura? and what's vegetable oil? sarada abura ... Why is it "salad"... you don't even use "vegetable oil" for salad.... Discussing pronunciation in 2006 「サラダ油」はサラダ“ゆ”? サラダ“あぶら”? https://www.excite.co.jp/news/article/00091146071656/ 「サラダ油」の読み方が、いつの間にか変わっているような気がする。かつてはほとんどの人が「サラダゆ」と読んでいたが、最近は料理番組などで必ず「サラダあぶら」と言っている気がするのだ。 It seems like the way "salad oil" is pronounced has changed over time. In the past, most people would pronounce it "salad yu," but recently, it seems like cooking shows always say "salad abura." https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/サラダ油 サラダ油(サラダゆ、サラダあぶら) Salad oil (salad yu, salad abura) or salad oil (salad oil) is a type of refined vegetable oil. https://www.reddit.com/r/translator/comments/f4rqar/japaneseenglish_could_someone_translate_these/ Apply salad oil (vegetable oil) to a hot plate heated to 230° celsius and cook boneless pork rib thoroughly. Commonly soy, canola (rapeseed), corn,... https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/bestsellers/food-beverage/71226051/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_food-beverage Official definition of "Salad Oil" in Japanese https://www.oil.or.jp/en/yougo/ "Salad oil" refers to vegetable oil which does not include constituents (natural wax, etc.) with a high melting point, is resistant to cold (do not solidify at any temperature), has a pleasant flavor, and has a light color. According to JAS (Japanese Agricultural Standards), salad oil remains clear for 5.5 hours at a temperature of 0 degrees Celsius. In addition to being consumed raw, salad oil is also used as an ingredient in mayonnaise, salad dressing, etc. Matches English Industrial Technical Terminology: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salad_oils Salad oils are types of vegetable oil suitable for salad dressing. The major characteristic is passing the AOCS Cold Test (5.5 hours minimum).[1] Oil is often combined with other substances to achieve desired flavour and viscosity. |
|
| Comments: | I'm going to assert that "salad oil" is [dated] for home-cooking in English and not generally advisable as a gloss(see first 4 refs, for example). I think most people who see "salad oil" will imagine "olive oil" or similar, not "highly refined canola oil". I wouldn't miss "salad oil" if it was dropped, but there are some highly-technical cases where it still applies (サラダ油・天ぷら油の市場, for example). In America(at least) the grocery-store equivalent is called "vegetable oil". While "vegetable oil" is a theoretically broad category, in practice it is exactly what サラダ油 is - a highly refined, high-spoke-point, neutral-flavored plant-derived oil. Regarding pronunciation, beyond the linked video and 2006 comments, a mid-20s Japanese person who gave サラダあぶら suggested that サラダゆ would be a mistake. He was surprised to learn it's considered valid at all. Browsing Amazons サラダ油 listing, soybean and canola are indeed the top options, and these examples provide clarity for chefs figuring out what to do with サラダ油 in a recipe. |

主として漢語サ変複合動詞語尾の未然形に「しめる」がついた形で用いられる。…させる。
Interestingly KOD追加語彙 has it as an [aux-v] entry (although I'm not sure I would take their example as a usage of a 助動詞 せしめる):
-せしめる 外字(-seshimeru)
⇒-しめる.
●その方策は彼を窮地から脱せしめた.
These measures got him out of the difficulty. | This course of action enabled him to escape (from) the predicament.
Daijirin's explanation seems pretty accurate for the most part.
The majority of examples for this せしめる in BCCWJ and massif were 漢語サ変 constructions:
「 [...] 被災現地の方々の復旧の意欲を高揚せしめるよう特段の御努力をお願いしておきたいと存じます。」
Though I also spotted this one in BCCWJ:
「しかし、そのあまりに優美な形から中国色よりも日本の造形美を感じせしめるものでもある」
And these two in massif:
「被害が広がりゆく前に変化を生じせしめなければならない。」
「突貫力に優れ、その先端は敵を貫きせしめるためのものだ。」
Which would align with Sankoku's second sense.
. |
|
| Comments: | You are correct. I'm unsure as to why I made this a pure [aux-v] entry. And on top of that I even forgot the attachment note. I've cut it back to an [exp] entry for now, but maybe there should be some additional information on sense one and two to avoid confusion with the other せしめる? I'd also point out that it may be worthwhile to have extra senses for the seemingly present [aux-v] usage. This reminds me of the させる entries. What do you think? |

| Refs: | On the surface this should be せ~しめる (せ being a stem of する), and if so this is not an auxiliary but rather a compound. Browsing a few dictionaries, the only one I had with an entry for this was Daijirin, which agrees with my initial impression: 『(連語)〔サ変動詞「する」の未然形「せ」に使役の助動詞「しめる」のついたもの〕主として漢語サ変複合動詞語尾の未然形に「しめる」がついた形で用いられる。…させる。「本隊を出発━◦しめる」』 |
|
| Comments: | Probably a compound; will not be conducting any changes myself as I do not have Sankoku and thus cannot judge its reference. If it could be cited, we can then decide which reference is the referenciest. |

|
| Comments: | I've deliberately not glossed it as "in-ear" because that term is typically used for earphones with silicone tips that go into the ear canal (which are called カナル型 in Japanese). インナーイヤー型 earphones sit just outside the ear canal. The first link has images showing the difference. There's no widely used, unambiguous term in English for this type of headphones. Although some sources contrast "earbuds" with "in-ear headphones", this distinction is not reliably maintained in mainstream usage. Almost all the "earbuds" sold on Amazon are canal-sealing models with silicone tips. |
