| Comments: | Wrapping up a proposal for 一人称・二人称・三人称 Unlike 一人称 and 二人称, selection of the "proper" 三人称 is not such a great topic of conversation. Most uses I can find is just talking about pronouns, both Japanese and foreign."英語の三人称" for example (sometimes appears as 英語の三人称代名詞, but not always). Still, it seems by extension that sense [3] must exist, at least in academic contexts. I've tagged it [rare]. That seems better than omitting it and having it appear to be missing. There's an argument to drop it though. This supposes that あの人 is a third-person pronoun. Japanese dictionaries seem to treat it as such. |

E.g. plural books is distinguished from singular book by the inflection -s, which is by that token a plural inflection." Conjugation: "The inflection of verbs; also a class of verbs which share a pattern of inflection" ⇒ i.e. subsumed under "inflection" Declension: "The inflection of nouns and other words whose categories are similar. Also of a class of nouns etc. which share a characteristic formal pattern of inflection. E.g. a ‘third declension’ noun in Latin is one of a class whose genitive singular is in -is, dative and ablative plural in - ibus, and so on." Because oxford's definition of "declension" is a bit unspecific I have also consulted Webster's third international dictionary: Declension: "noun, adjective or pronoun inflection" ⇒ i.e. also subsumed under "inflection" . |
|
| Comments: | "declinable word" is not a good gloss given the kokugo descriptions and the meaning in English as outlined above. To my knowledge "declension" is specifically used for case related changes of nouns, pronouns (and adjectives). Thus Japanese doesn't even have "declension" in that sense. Furthermore, "inflectable word" by itself is not sufficient because it also includes 助動詞, which 用言 does not. As "inflection" is the most neutral and broad term at hand I suggest we use generally use it. |

| Comments: | I don't really get what the gloss "want to ... do something" is supposed to express. I suggest having them like this Principally we could have the [adj-i] tag to indicate the inflectional pattern, couldn't we? たい inflects exactly the same as modern 形容詞: 「かろ・かっ(く)・い・い・けれ・○」 On a sidenote, we have 20 entries with "sentence-end", vs 46 with "sentence end". I suggest converting the former to the hyphen-less version (maybe this can be done in bulk?). |

| Comments: | The terminology one finds in online sources is "all over the place", because 牛伝染性リンパ腫 used to be (scientifically incorrectly) called 牛白血病, and the shift from the old to the new nomenclature is still in progress (not only in Japan but also in English and German speaking countries). Here is some background information (translated from the German version of the Wikipedia page on 牛伝染性リンパ腫, since there is no English version): "Enzootic leukosis in cattle, also known as bovine leukemia or bovine leukosis, is a tumorous degeneration of white blood cells that occurs in cattle, buffalo, and water buffalo. The term leukemia, which is commonly used in human medicine, is not applicable here, as animals - including cattle - do not generally experience an increase in leukocytes in the blood." |

| Comments: | The old (and scientifically incorrect) terms "bovine leukemia" and 牛白血病 has been officially replaced with "enzootic bovine leukosis" and 牛伝染性リンパ腫 not only in Japanese but also in English, but this change has not been implemented throughly enough, so now we can find countless articles with "messy" statements of this kind: "Enzootic bovine leukosis is a disease of cattle caused by bovine leukemia virus (BLV)". I think the term 牛白血病 needs to be in the dictionary because of the many existing older pubications that contain it. |

| Comments: | Motivation (for a separate entry than 縮む) is because み gets absorbed into 縮 (縮こむ), which results in dictionary lookups only showing 縮 and not 縮む. Alternatively, if 縮 can also link to 縮む that would suffice too. The [1] definition is the same as 縮む's. |

| Comments: | There's no need for a hiragana reading. Any of the readings can be written as 成吉思汗. We really do need a search-only tag in jmnedict. That would allow us to put all the forms in one entry. At the moment, チンギス汗 and ジンギス汗 will have to remain separate entries. |

| Comments: | I'm trying to sort out our messy Genghis Khan name entries. At present, we have 7 entries; 3 (or 4) with kanji forms and a total of 10 possible katakana forms, including variants and nakagura. What I propose initially is to have three kanji form entries: - 成吉思汗/じんぎすかん - ジンギス汗/ジンギスかん - チンギス汗/チンギスかん and a single entry with all the katakana forms, roughly in rfrequency order. I'm opening this up for possible discussion, in case anyone can suggest a better alternative. |

| Comments: | Can we merge the other readings into this entry? Assuming there are no issues with hidden forms in jmnedict, I'd like to propose this format for non-Japanese/Chinese names (only having the nakaguro forms visible). It's neater and it's what GG5 uses. |
