See ナイスセンス (just added). This one a bit more controversial, but confirmed by a couple of natives. I showed him this shirt from an ugly sweater:
https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/1hili0i/i_won_my_companys_ugly_sweater_compition_last/

He exclaimed "ダサえ" (ダサい), which is probably the proper antonym of ナイスセンス. But in any case, he confirmed that the shirt is indeed ナンセンス in the "pun" sense.

Best evidence that this exists is the twitter post complaining that they hate people who do use this term this way (first ref). Which means people do use this term that way. Second ref is *another* person complaining about someone using the term this way. Funny.

adj-na is mostly immaterial for [1]. Does ナンセンスだ mean "it's nonsense" or "it's nonsensical". shrug. but "nonsense" is principally a noun in English, so I swapped.

"engagement" is what the kids are saying these days

While Japanese weddings are widely celebrated, few outsiders know about yuino (結納), the formal engagement ceremony that predates the wedding itself.

It's a wikipedia headword in this capacity ("the whole custom"):
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/結納
結納(ゆいのう)は日本の婚約の儀式。
家同士で行う婚約の儀式であり、新郎新婦の他に両親ら親族が参加して行う。

Same thing

chatgpt:

Does 結納した mean "we exchanged gifts" or "we did the whole gift-exchange ceremony event thing"
ChatGPT said:
結納した usually implies the full ceremony took place, not just the act of giving a single gift.

Literally, it’s “did 結納.”

In context, Japanese understand it as “we performed the formal betrothal ritual, including the gift exchange”, not just “we gave gifts.”
  Comments:
Talked to a table of Japanese people about this vs 顔合わせ (edits coming... Short answer: you do both, this comes second). They supported gemini's assertion: 結納 is *the entire custom* (which is a formal meeting of the couple-to-be-married, both sets of parents, with a ritualistic/ceremonial exchange of gifts.

I know the gloss is wordy, but that really is the minimum info I want to know when someone tells me they are preparing for 結納. I tried to make it tight.

結納式 is largely unnecessary. I got funny faces when I asked if 結納 and 結納式 meant the same thing. Like, why say 結納式?
結納	500320	98.7%
結納式	6339	1.3%

Compare also:
結納の流れ	1132	94.9%
結納式の流れ	61	5.1%

We are inconsistent with "engagement" and betrothal in the 結納 entries. I am fine with either. "engagement" is approachable for modern readers, "betrothal" is perhaps a better "historical" match.

You may strip the 's' on [2], but everything is telling me this essentially has to be plural. Image search 結納品 to see what I mean, they come in sets. [2] is only for the specific gifts in [1], not just "any old engagement gifts". It really can't be "one item of betrothal gift".

Since it kind of got overshadowed before, I'm gonna put the BCCWJ data here once more:

"(4)BCCWJ (Counts in brackets are for 反面):
半面 has 250 counts in total (1069)

Sense one:
{〘活用形=連体形〙}{半面}= 58 (456)
{〘活用形=連体形〙}{半面}{、}= 45 (314)

Sense two:
{、}{半面}= 21 (117)
{、}{半面}{、}= 7 (68)
{。}{半面}= 72 (100)
{。}{半面}{、}= 63 (62)
{〘品詞=連体詞〙}{半面}= 42 (212)
Note that there may be a few missing for the counts with commas, as some of the sentences used , instead of 、.

That's 157 (45 + 7 + 63 + 42) out of 250 hits for conjunctive usage (I didn't use the counts for{。}{半面}and{、}{半面}on purpose, as they could technically include false hits for noun usage). That makes 62.8% of total usage.
Based on that I put the conjunctive senses first, as in the 反面 entry."

.
  Comments:
Both massif and reverso examples show that the conjunctive usage makes up the largest part of total usage.
In case it hasn't been noted yet, the BCCWJ data also supports this.

I get that it's currently only sankoku explicitly marking these senses, but I believe they're on the right track here.
Them also being treated as basically the same grammatical constructs in Brian's Waseda grammar textbook could technically serve as another reference here too.

I think if these two senses were to not lead, we also couldn't reasonably have these [rare] tags on the other senses. Since it's really a comparative rarity and not an absolute one.
And less stark than with 反面 at that.

I've been concerned about those proposed first two senses. After all, they're not in most references. I've come round to accepting them, although I'd be more comfortable if they didn't lead. I'll approve and leave open for a while.
11. A* 2025-11-27 19:35:08  Sombrero1
  Comments:
No worries, I figured that something along those lines had happened.

>So my [2] was the previous [2]. I only meant to say that the grammatical usage was far more common than all of these [rare] noun senses, and this term is not itself [rare]. Right now it looks like it is.

Thanks

>So, yes, to be clear, my belief is that the grammatical senses of 反面 should be all be copy/pasted straight into this entry with xrefs (maybe just one way, from here to there). They should probably be the leading senses.

Good, that's what I had proposed as well. I didn't think the usage of conjunctive 半面 vs 反面 was marginal enough to be reduced to a hidden form and a note in 反面. I've put the two senses from my edit back and left Jims additions from the previous edit in place.

>And who knows, we might even decide there is a subtle nuance meriting slight deviation in the glosses. If not today, maybe tomorrow.

I actually had something like this in mind when I put "(but) at the same time" first in sense two. It's quite the minor change, but why not.

If this is approved, the incoming xref from 半顔 will need to be aligned.
And 半面 + the note would need to be removed from 反面.

What's the best term to use if I'd like to ask someone about ice fishing in Japan?
https://gemini.google.com/share/5d5939fcc935

1. The Most Natural Term: ワカサギ釣り (Wakasagi-tsuri)

This literally means "Smelt fishing." In Japan, ice fishing is almost synonymous with catching Wakasagi (Japanese pond smelt). If you ask someone about "ice fishing," they will immediately assume you mean this.

2. The Descriptive Term: 氷上釣り (Hyōjō-zuri)
3. The Ambiguous Term: 穴釣り (Anazuri)
You may encounter this term, which translates to "hole fishing," but use it with caution.
  Comments:
I agree with you that the xref is not explanatory. I've been trying to add it as one of our "use this instead" xrefs.

Last night I had a table of a Japanese people and showed them photos of Canadian ice fishing, deliberately with a *giant* fish in the fisherman's hands, and I asked them what it was called.

*no one* produced "穴釣り". Several suggested ワカサギ釣り while others pointed out the size of the fish. "Can't be ワカサギ釣り, the fish is too big". They did not have another word. (In fairness, we are in Hokkaido, where ワカサギ釣り is popular)

One Japanese person I gave "穴釣り" to, without any pictures, explained that she simply *guessed* that it was ice fishing. Because where else do you need to make a hole?

ワカサギ釣り is just a better term for ice fishing in Japan most of the time. It's got to be at least 10x more popular on the ngrams(considering other senses).
ワカサギ釣り	63447	57.0%
わかさぎ釣り	21631	19.5%
穴釣り	26135	23.5%

If you look up "ice fishing" right now in jmdictdb, you will not find ワカサギ釣り. If you object to the xref even on "use-instead" grounds, I'd advocate for putting "esp. ice fishing" back on ワカサギ釣り。 I don't actually know why this was changed on "on a frozen lake". "Ice Fishing" is a fairly well-understood term.

  Comments:
I'm going to pitch at least this x-ref one more time.

I think most americans, at least, know what "ice fishing" is from media. In Japan, 穴釣り seems like fishing 専門用語. Several people have not recognized it in any sense. Today I found someone who did, having been invited once by a friend to do it. It was ice fishing, and it was for smelt. Smelt-fishing was the only activity he would use 穴釣り for. Amusingly, he could not recall the name of the fish, but as soon as I said ワカサギ釣り his face lit up. Tip-of-the-tongue. But his friends used 穴釣り.

Maybe there is some regional preference (all the more reason to link the forms), but ワカサギ釣り is the more common term for the activity. It's 3 times more common than *every* sense of 穴釣り combined. Wikipedia xrefs it, and daijs gives it in the 穴釣り definition. It also has the upside of being unambiguous, which 穴釣り is not. We've already acknowledged the relevance of the link with "esp. for smelt". It would be a very useful link for anyone looking for more information about this activity.

An additional reason for the xref is that the change from "esp. ice fishing" to "esp. on a frozen lake" makes ワカサギ釣り much harder to discover. One might reasonably search for "ice fishing" when looking for this activity, but not "frozen lake". At least the xref will get them back there.

A concession: Japanese people, when shown alaskan ice fishing with big fish, had no idea how to describe it. 氷(上)穴釣り seems best thought of niche fishing jargon. (Thought it is easy to find it in blogs and tourism marketing materials if you search "カナダ" "氷上穴釣り"). This is just not part of Japan's cultural repertoire, outside of smelt.

Theoretically, though probably unlikely, 痴言 can also be read しれごと (角川古語大辞典, Nikkoku, Smk).
Two of the examples I looked at weren't read with a normal reading at all, but with gikun readings. One as たわごと and the other as のろけ.
And FWIW the two examples of 痴言 in NINJAL corpora are read おこごと. So again, too little to base this on for us.
烏滸言 is only in Koj, so I think we could probably just hide it. No harm done.

This is in all likelihood borderline archaic and should probably best stay as one entry with the [rare] tag.
That's going to be the most helpful to users, that or [arch].

On a side note, I find it funny that 知言・ちげん also exists, with the opposite meaning.

ちげん, written 痴言, rare, but exists
おこごと, written 烏滸言, super rare, and within that rarely written 痴言

Too rare to bother?

All of our other every other "おこごと" words are headed with the おこごと 烏滸 kanji, so this entry will appear out of place.

Book results for 烏滸言 consist of: 10 reference books, and maybe 4 hits?

痴言 has at least 30 pages of book results, probably pronounced ちげん most of the time.

Speculating on kanji frequency for 痴 as おこ:
烏滸がましい	3056	92.8%
痴がましい	236	7.2%

おこごと in hiragana is inflated, more likely お小言:

Unfortunately these counts don't seem to be reliable either, since most of the BCCWJ hits are おこちゃま, おこさん, おこさま.
Not sure what happened there

Iwakoku gives ナノ, hence the [adj-no] tag on sense one. See also 烏滸の沙汰.
Nikkoku's examples go up to 1700. According to it, 尾籠 only came up during the muromachi period, while the original word had been existing during the nara period already. I guess that form can stay last.

.
  Comments:
Definitely not common. Can't use the google ngrams well since the counts of 尾籠 and 痴 are littered with duplicates.
Unfortunately the corpus data offers next to nothing here as well.

Waffled a lot here just to ultimately come to very little, a bit frustrating.
Apart from the fact that this should be tagged [dated] or [obs].

舞台化: the process
"千と千尋の神隠しの舞台化"
https://www.sankei.com/article/20211126-XSU2ZKSKXRJH7NVGHUKY5UBMNA/
鈴木は、「千と千尋の神隠し」の舞台化について、こんなエピソードも披露した。ケアードから直接、舞台化の打診を受けた際、宮崎監督が周囲の予想に反して「いいよ」と快諾。「あんなに多くの人に支持されたのだから、もう俺のものじゃない。皆さんのものだ」といった感じだったという。
google: Suzuki also shared this story about the stage adaptation of "Spirited Away." When Caird directly approached him about adapting it for the stage, Miyazaki readily agreed, contrary to everyone's expectations. He seemed to respond, "Since so many people have supported it, it's no longer mine. It belongs to you all."

舞台: the result

橋本さんは、この発表に「この度『千と千尋の神隠し』の舞台を中国の皆様にお届けできる事、とても光栄に思います。
Regarding this announcement, Hashimoto said, "I am extremely honored to be able to bring the stage production of 'Spirited Away' to everyone in China.

2. The Comparison: Butai vs. Butaika
If you want to say "I like the stage adaptation" in the sense of the product (the show itself), you would usually drop the "ka".
〇〇の舞台が好き (XX no Butai ga suki):
Translation: "I like the XX stage play."

Focus: The show as a piece of entertainment. You enjoyed watching it.
〇〇の舞台化が好き (XX no Butaika ga suki):
Translation: "I like the [way they handled the] staging of XX" OR "I prefer the stage version (over the movie/anime version)."
Focus: The transformation process or the format itself.
  Comments:
The xref is to a new sense, that might need fixing.

As a verb, 舞台化された "was adapted for the stage". (ngrams)

I worked on this for hours before realizing that I am reverting Robin's very recent edit.

I think "stage/theatrical adaptation"(noun) is problematic in English because, without context, it will usually be interpreted as "the end product". "I loved the theatrical adaptation of Beauty and the Beast". This is not that. This is probably why the glosses were as they were. I do think "stage adaptation" belongs here, but I think it needs a big warning sign.

It could work for something like "stage adaptation takes a lot of resources to do well". Or, as in the example below "there are updates in the (in-progress) stage adaptation of XYZ".

Or something like "舞台化決定". "this work is going to be adapted for the stage" / "Theatrical adaptation announced/confirmed".

I have some AI notes, but this is based on human conversations about 舞台 and 舞台化 (see xref). Once a book is mentioned, 舞台もあります means "there's also a theatrical adaptation/version". 舞台化 would not be used this way.

舞台がある	15860	82.6%
舞台もある	3333	17.4%
舞台化がある	0	0.0%
舞台化もある	0	0.0%

If you want to do a lot of reading, these both return innumerable results, the nuance is different:
"千と千尋の神隠しの舞台" (most conversations about the stage performance itself, "the stage adaptation", "the theatrical production", "the end product"
"千と千尋の神隠しの舞台化" how it came about, how is it progressing, when will it be done, what was involved....

Random google hit, page 5:
https://www.huffingtonpost.jp/entry/story_jp_60383864c5b6371109daf58b
「千と千尋の神隠し」の舞台化に驚きの声。千尋役は橋本環奈さん、上白石萌音さん。ハク役は誰に...?
google: There are voices of surprise at the stage adaptation of "Spirited Away." Chihiro will be played by Kanna Hashimoto and Mone Kamishiraishi. Who will play Haku...?

The production is *in progress*, and that's what's being talked about. It's subtle.

I also have the reference in question, but apart from that I can't find anything about "island cars" in traffic control.
Neither in English nor in Japanese. It has zero hits in the google ngrams and NINJAL corpora.
Not in the automobile industry glossary either.

I saw a handful of direct hits for "アイランドカー" in the NDL, but I can't confirm whether these actually relate to what's described in the reference.
On top of that it indicates that it's a loanword, but, as mentioned above, I can't find any credit for this in English either.

This seems too obscure.
If there was a context or some form of media where this word was encountered with that meaning, it would greatly help if it were provided.

錦大沼公園 ワカサギ釣り(にしきおおぬまこうえん ワカサギづり)
  Comments:
Introduced to me as a winter activity. It's specifically ice fishing for this particular fish, which must be particular to the lakes where it is caught in Northern Japan.

Tourist and cultural activity. Image search matches chatgpt's rough explanation: strong "ice fishing" implication, but in can occur in non-freezing conditions.

Vastly more common than any other word for "ice fishing"

  Comments:
yes, we've been deleting archaic senses/readings for a while but this wasn't really discussed fully in the github issue (https://github.com/JMdictProject/JMdictIssues/issues/140)
if it's currently part of the police it should be made clear

also looking at my refs it seems like sense 2 is more popular/maybe it should lead

Meikyo has 古風, Smk [poet], so it's a coinflip really. Although the latter is probably better, as 古風 seems rather broad.
Interestingly Meikyo and Smk don't tag たて, sankoku gives it the usual〔文〕

.
  Comments:
I don't really mind the other changes, but what's the point of dropping a sense that is, albeit archaic, well supported and already there?
That's what the tag is for.

  Comments:
I think senses 1 and 4 can be merged.
Sense 3 is very archaic and only in the larger kokugos. I think it can be dropped.
smk has〔雅〕for both senses.
I don't think the x-refs are needed.

Fairly confident on this one. Since "sense" does not automatically mean "taste" in English, the xref provides immediate clarity on the meaning.

Can apply to the object, or the person with the good taste. It is exclamatory, so I think "great" is better than "good" (センスがいい). Google translates as "great taste" as well.

An early-30s Japanese girl introduced ナイスセンス・ナンセンス as an analogue for good taste/bad taste. Seems it's used as a superlative compliment, so went for "great" over "good". Some people at the table chuckled and said they wouldn't use the term that way(ナンセンス in particular, also adding). But I talked to another guy for nearly an hour and confirmed the usage.

I showed the Starbucks mug (1st ref) to a young Japanese guy for confirmation, and *before reading the post* he naturally exclaimed ナイスセンス!, as he thought the Starbucks mug was really cool. For him, it was the mug itself that was "ナイスセンス". In the post, it may have been the gift-giver. One of these Japanese "applies to everything in the vicinity" terms, I think.
