There are no strict criteria but we have some guidelines. [adj-no] is inherently problematic, as Sombrero1 showed in his excellent comment. Please see the most recent comment on 南極地方 where I discuss the tag in some detail.
Sombrero1 is correct. This is not [adj-no] as we currently use the tag.
10. A* 2025-11-20 23:07:25  Sean McBroom <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Then what criteria should determine whether a sense gets an adj-no tag? Is it based on corpus frequency, lexicalization, idiomatic English equivalents, or some other principle?
9. A* 2025-11-20 21:40:13  Sombrero1
  Comments:
> There are clearly uses of 家庭の〜, so it works as a の-adj in function.
This would imply that every N + の + N construction is adjectival in nature, which isn't the case.

の first and foremost indicates genitive case, making it quite a bit more difficult to draw a line in between "[adj-no]" and "not [adj-no]"
From what I've seen so far the [adj-no] tag is heavily dependent on the perceived degree of adjectivality, which is then often mirrored by an adjectival translation into English (take 常磐 as an example).

While I could see "家庭の" translating as "domestic" in some cases, that seems to be about it.
In the ngrams roughly 10% of hits are 家庭の~, which isn't overwhelming.
Most collocations in the top100 ngrams don't really seem that adjectival to me. Some of the most common are:
家庭の医学 (also name of a book), a fairly standard genitive N + の + N construction
家庭の事情 (apparently also name of a film), same thing as above
家庭の教育
etc.

https://www.edrdg.org/~jwb/cgi-bin/ngramlookup?sent=家庭の&topjuku=on&top100=on

Furthermore, NINJAL corpora don't parse 家庭 as a 名詞-普通名詞-形状詞可能, which they do in cases like 空っぽ (coinciding with our tagging).
There 家庭 is simply a 名詞-普通名詞-一般 in all instances.
IIRC NINJAL uses Unidic as well

There is certainly no objective ruling to be made here, at least not on my part, but to me this does not seem like an [adj-no] either.
And if there are cases where 家庭の is indeed of adjectival nature (which I don't doubt), it doesn't seem substantial enough to warrant the tag.

Tightened slightly. "bulky" and "heavy" identify the same thing here, but maybe "bulky" makes the connection to "bundle up" more salient. If that is indeed the connection. Chatgpt prefers "bulky or heavy", which would also be fine.

Japanese person used to the term 分厚い to speculate that this is why it was used with armor (no Japanese person has volunteered the armor connection without it being pointed out, so this is speculation on his part).

For 分厚い we have:
thick; bulky; massive; heavy

  Comments:
"to wear" should probably be there, just like on 着る. A 3rd Japanese speaker volunteered the fashion sense of "wear a sweater under a jacket", which gemini also hammered me on. Even so, I think "warmth" is usually still a goal, so the wording of 2 is fine.

It seems like an optional/stylish replacement for 着る when warm layering is involved. I think it's a nuance that would usually be dropped in translation.

sense [5], fashion of worn jeans and jean jacket, zero layers (shirtless!)
https://liveinrugged.com/2024/03/24/blackmeans-kamiya-202403/
  Comments:
I don't have a good winter jacket, so I'm wearing multiple lighter jackets. 着込む was taught to me in this sense: "Layering". I just wanted to improve the main sense, but went down a rabbit hole.

Except for [5], all transitive senses could be glossed as "to put on" or "to wear". It's all about added nuance.

The transitive and intransitive uses for "protect from cold" have very different glosses, so I split them. When you see セーターを着込んだ, it's not clear what to do with that. In fact, the usual translation is just "he put on a sweater". "For warmth" is integral to common usage.

[1] is reported to be more common/natural than [2], but both are common. One Japanese speaker thought of [3] when pressed. One barely believed [3] even when shown the dictionary entry. That said, here's a modern example of the not-uncommon collocation スーツを着込む (with pic)
https://www.wws-channel.com/girls2/371601.html/attachment/tn00-57?pg=371601&mv

[4] Was "discovered" for me by gemini, who insisted I had missed it. The ngrams with 鎧 speak for themselves. This has a classic/stiff feel, and even google will translate as "donned a suit of armor". One Japanese speaker was surprised, but another was familiar with this usage. Her intuition was that the expanded sense of 着込む was perhaps "wear extra clothing for protection" (from cold, swords, fire, bullets...). Gemini also suggests "wearing of heavy/stuffy clothing". Hence suits of armor, firemen's equipment, bulletproof vests(suggested directly by Japanese speaker). It's a special use case.

[5] is an independent derivation from the others, I think. 着る+込む (to do thoroughly/repeatedly), and appears in fashion for well-worn/pre-worn clothing. Japanese speakers had no problem with this sense when shown examples. 着込めば着込むほど is a surprisingly common structure for "the more you wear X, the more it (develops character, etc)". Lots of high-end clothing/fashion websites have this.

I don't know if it's us or jisho.org importing it, but the sentence attached to the formalwear sense (previously [2]) "an emissary from outer space" is reported to be just absolutely awful.

Most references don't perform this split, and I personally don't think the glosses are different enough to warrant it.
"To make a living (somewhere)" can have a very similar meaning to "to get by" or "to live (on)".
暮らす generally carries a nuance of daily activity and/or sustenance for the "living" sense, so having all these five glosses in one sense seems fine to me.
The other JEs agree.

On top of that "to get (along, by)" doesn't work in my eyes.

Chatgpt:
No — “sex friend” is not an idiomatic expression in English.
It’s essentially a calque of セックスフレンド → セフレ, but English speakers virtually never say “sex friend.”

Natural English equivalents:
friends with benefits (most common, neutral-colloquial)
FWB (abbreviation)
casual sex partner
hookup buddy (slightly more casual)
  Comments:
I don't believe "sex friend" is common in English, slang or otherwise. I doubt we'd even consider it here, were it not a lit translation from katakana.

Maybe include it was a waseigo note?

Browsing x.com, it happens to occur, mixed with a lot of foreigner usage, expressions like "same-sex friend", "opposite sex friend?". Looks like it might be an actual expression in french. Just noticed Jim's 2013 opinion on the xref that this might be waseigo. I agree.

fuck buddy is more common than hookup buddy, but looks like a worse option in terms of matching vulgarity.

Browsing x.com, "fuck buddy" is basically never hyphenated.

  Comments:
I was mistaken. I associate 小人 very strongly with the the dwarfs in Snow White and I'm accustomed to seeing 妖精 used for "fairy" and similar creatures from Western folklore.
I think "dwarf" is fine as a gloss but I'll move it down. All the EJs have 小人 for "dwarf" and smk's example for 小人 is「白雪姫と七人の―」. The other small creatures/beings might be better as examples.
I'll switch the order of the senses.

I don't like dwarf, because it implies a body of certain proportions, and I dare say dwarves tend to be rather tall, but this is about tiny people, maybe 30 cm or less in height, such as
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Poor_little_birdie_teased_by_Richard_Doyle.jpg (found on the wikipedia page for elf)

would anybody call issun boushi a dwarf?

gnome, elf, leprechaun, sprite, pixie are roughly correct in size at least even if they imply some sort of magical creature.

in addition, sense 1 may not be modern, since smaller kokugos such as meikyo choose to omit it

It is a big advantage to be able to search for "ice fishing" and get this term. I can see arguments for the elegance of the other phrasing, but it is a big loss to search "ice fishing" and not have this come up in the results.

This is *the* term for ice fishing in Japan.

See my final comments on 穴釣り for details. But xref or no, I think this wording is more useful, and does not detract from the meaning.

Introduced to me as a winter activity. It's specifically ice fishing for this particular fish, which must be particular to the lakes where it is caught in Northern Japan.

Tourist and cultural activity. Image search matches chatgpt's rough explanation: strong "ice fishing" implication, but in can occur in non-freezing conditions.

Vastly more common than any other word for "ice fishing"
