It seems like an optional/stylish replacement for 着る when warm layering is involved.  I think it's a nuance that would usually be dropped in translation.

I don't have a good winter jacket, so I'm wearing multiple lighter jackets.  着込む was taught to me in this sense: "Layering". I just wanted to improve the  main sense, but went down a rabbit hole.

Except for [5], all transitive senses could be glossed as "to put on" or "to wear".  It's all about added nuance.

The transitive and intransitive uses for "protect from cold" have very different glosses, so I split them.  When you see セーターを着込んだ, it's not clear what to do with that.  In fact, the usual translation is just "he put on a sweater". "For warmth" is integral to common usage.

[1] is reported to be more common/natural than [2], but both are common. One Japanese speaker thought of [3] when pressed.  One barely believed [3] even when shown the dictionary entry.  That said, here's a modern example of the not-uncommon collocation スーツを着込む (with pic)

This has a classic/stiff feel, and even google will translate as "donned a suit of armor".  One Japanese speaker was surprised, but another was familiar with this usage.  Her intuition was that the expanded sense of 着込む was perhaps "wear extra clothing for protection" (from cold, swords, fire, bullets...).  Gemini also suggests "wearing of heavy/stuffy clothing".  Hence suits of armor, firemen's equipment, bulletproof vests(suggested directly by Japanese speaker). It's a special use case.
 
[5] is an independent derivation from the others, I think.  着る+込む (to do thoroughly/repeatedly), and appears in fashion for well-worn/pre-worn clothing.  Japanese speakers had no problem with this sense when shown examples. 着込めば着込むほど is a surprisingly common structure for "the more you wear X, the more it (develops character, etc)".  Lots of high-end clothing/fashion websites have this.

I don't know if it's us or jisho.org importing it, but the sentence attached to the formalwear sense (previously [2]) "an emissary from outer space" is reported to be just absolutely awful.

Good, that's what I had proposed as well. I didn't think the usage of conjunctive 半面 vs 反面 was marginal enough to be reduced to a hidden form and a note in 反面. I've put the two senses from my edit back and left Jims additions from the previous edit in place.

I believe there are three cases to distinguish here, if we want to be precise:
Case 1: the plain noun 反面 (which does appear to be rather uncommon)
Case 2: grammaticalized 反面 as a plain conjunction/conjunctive adverb, i.e. a *自立語*
Case 3: grammaticalized 反面 as a conjunctive particle taking a 連体修飾語, i.e. a *付属語*

Furthermore I would assert that in case 3, 反面 is most naturally translated as "while", "though", and so forth, but not really as "on the other hand".
While in case 2 (this includes その反面), it is something like "on the other hand" or "then again"

I agree with you that the xref is not explanatory.  I've been trying to add it as one of our "use this instead" xrefs. 

Last night I had a table of a Japanese people and showed them photos of Canadian ice fishing, deliberately with a *giant* fish in the fisherman's hands, and I asked them what it was called.

*no one* produced "穴釣り".  Several suggested ワカサギ釣り while others pointed out the size of the fish.  "Can't be　ワカサギ釣り, the fish is too big". They did not have another word. (In fairness, we are in Hokkaido, where ワカサギ釣り is popular)

One Japanese person I gave "穴釣り" to, without any pictures, explained that she simply *guessed* that it was ice fishing.  Because where else do you need to make a hole?

ワカサギ釣り is just a better term for ice fishing in Japan most of the time. It's got to be at least 10x more popular on the ngrams(considering other senses).

If you look up "ice fishing" right now in jmdictdb, you will not find ワカサギ釣り. "Ice Fishing" is a fairly well-understood term.

I think most americans, at least, know what "ice fishing" is from media.  In Japan, 穴釣り seems like fishing 専門用語. Several people have not recognized it in any sense.  Today I found someone who did, having been invited once by a friend to do it.  It was ice fishing, and it was for smelt.  Smelt-fishing was the only activity he would use 穴釣り for.  Amusingly, he could not recall the name of the fish, but as soon as I said ワカサギ釣り his face lit up. Tip-of-the-tongue. But his friends used 穴釣り.

Maybe there is some regional preference (all the more reason to link the forms), but ワカサギ釣り is the more common term for the activity. It's 3 times more common than *every* sense of 穴釣り combined. Wikipedia xrefs it, and daijs gives it in the 穴釣り definition. It also has the upside of being unambiguous, which 穴釣り is not. We've already acknowledged the relevance of the link with "esp. for smelt".  It would be a very useful link for anyone looking for more information about this activity.

An additional reason for the xref is that the change from "esp. ice fishing" to "esp. on a frozen lake" makes ワカサギ釣り much harder to discover.  One might reasonably search for "ice fishing" when looking for this activity, but not "frozen lake".  At least the xref will get them back there.

A concession: Japanese people, when shown alaskan ice fishing with big fish, had no idea how to describe it. 氷(上)穴釣り seems best thought of niche fishing jargon. (Thought it is easy to find it in blogs and tourism marketing materials if you search "カナダ" "氷上穴釣り").  This is just not part of Japan's cultural repertoire, outside of smelt.

I think this is waseigo.  We just love "exoskeleton" too much to call it anything bland like "power/lift assist suit". Certainly Japanese products *are* translated this way, so if you want to make it a gloss you could.  But I don't think it's common English. 

Introduced by Japanese speaker when I explained what an "exoskeleton" was in a generic context (not for logistics, just "robot skeleton outside of body"). She was quite fixed on this term.

She reports 外骨格 could be used in SciFi contexts, but not in, say disability assistance or a workplace environment. 

Wikipedia gives a list of variants of varieties of exoskeleton: 強化服 強化スーツ ロボットスーツ 強化外骨格 外骨格
But specifically in nursing and cargo/logistics, this term:

It is a big advantage to be able to search for "ice fishing" and get this term.  I can see arguments for the elegance of the other phrasing, but it is a big loss to search "ice fishing" and not have this come up in the results.

This is *the* term for ice fishing in Japan.

See my final comments on 穴釣り for details.  But xref or no, I think this wording is more useful, and does not detract from the meaning.

Introduced to me as a winter activity.  It's specifically ice fishing for this particular fish, which must be particular to the lakes where it is caught in Northern Japan.  

Tourist and cultural activity.  Image search matches chatgpt's rough explanation: strong "ice fishing" implication, but in can occur in non-freezing conditions.

Vastly more common than any other word for  "ice fishing"
