  Comments:
I've been probing Japanese people with images of "slush". Not one person could give an immediate answer. I've concluded that there is no (common) Japanese word for "slush" (partially melted snow)

べちゃべちゃ(の)雪 is the most agreed-upon thing people settled on (often natives discussing among themselves).

One speaker mentioned ビシャビシャ, for which we already have "slushy", but they concluded べちゃべちゃ was a better. Does not need to be muddy snow, just sloppy/wet. Some suggested ぐしゃぐしゃ, which other speakers disliked.

I was shocked that Japan does not have a common word for "slush", but べちゃべちゃ will get the right point across.

Confirmed that ベタ雪 is something else (wet vs. powder snow)

I guess the scope is broader, though I'm unaware if there's a better related term in Japanese. It's just what I've seen personally. For example, when you go to a clinic, they will ask who your primary care provider is.

I was mainly a bit sceptical about the noun "dainty" being this obscure in AmE, since neither oxford nor webster note that it's chiefly BrE.
However, I'm not an AmE native speaker as you are so I will obviously concede on that aspect.
As for AI, I may also be a bit biased against it, but the chat you provided was an interesting read.
This does seem reasonable to me now, thank you for the reply.

I think having [form] is preferable to not having it, even if it's imperfect. This is certainly not a common oral form. I didn't add [form] myself only because of previous comments.

Re:AI citations. Language analysis is a unique capability of LLMs. They didn't "learn" the answer by reading every reference book, and thus they have no citations to give. The answers about word meanings are essentially digital "intuition", informed by simultaneously processing every digitized text in existence and building weights between words in every language. Because of this, I think their "opinion" on language is generally worth consideration. Yes, hallucinations are possible(esp. when they don't know the answer). LLMs should never be a primary source. But if an LLM's analysis (esp. of *English*) agrees with my own intuition, that feels more weighty to me than my intuition on its own. If I think a word is obsolete in AmE, and chatgpt thinks it's obsolete in AmE, I feel pretty confident.

That said, it is eminently possible to lead an LLM to any answer you want, even by accident. That's why I usually also link whole conversations so the questioning is opaque.

I stand by my earlier comments on "dainty". It's not (just) gemini saying it's misleading for AmE speakers, I am. I don't think the split makes any difference on that. In AmE "dainty" will be read as an adjective meaning "small/petite" no matter what you put it next to. We'd have to tag it explicitly as (BrE) to avoid the problem (which we don't do).

  Comments:
Sankoku now has its typical[文], and GendaiShinkoku notes 「文章語的に」. I think it may now be appropriate to have a form tag.
But perhaps there still is a debate to be had given Robin's comments in 2020.

Two senses are clearer.

"cate" is archaic according to oxford and webster3.
GG5 also mentions "epicurean food" but I don't think we need that as a gloss.

I wouldn't mind having "dainty" as a lower gloss on sense two, there's really nothing "misleading" about that now, as gemini calls it, since that sense only has a [n] PoS.

On a sidenote, I still think if AI is used as a reference, it should be asked to provide references and sources itself for what it's saying. These models are all extremely prone to making up information.

Most references don't perform this split, and I personally don't think the glosses are different enough to warrant it.
"To make a living (somewhere)" can have a very similar meaning to "to get by" or "to live (on)".
暮らす generally carries a nuance of daily activity and/or sustenance for the "living" sense, so having all these five glosses in one sense seems fine to me.
The other JEs agree.

On top of that "to get (along, by)" doesn't work in my eyes.

Chatgpt on "slushy"
1600s	Grease/refuse from boiling meat	油かす, 油の残り
1700s	Muddy, watery ground	泥濘 (ぬかるみ)
1800s–today	Melting snow/ice	雪解けの泥, 雪混じりの水

Chatgpt on this term:
ぬかるむ is the more common modern form; 泥濘る survives mostly in older writing or dialect.
The sense is soil-based, not icy or purely watery; it implies thickness and resistance (mud, mire, sludge).

Frequency and form

ぬかるむ → the standard, living verb. Common in speech and writing.
ぬかる → almost never used in everyday modern Japanese.
Appears in classical literature, dialectal variants, or poetic diction.
You might see 泥濘る in kanji dictionaries or older regional writings, but not in normal prose.
  Comments:
Image search: ぬかるんだ道
This is never going to be "slushy".

After doing some winter "slush" research (see: べちゃべちゃ edit), I think the 泥濘/slush matches are all based on a very [dated] meaning of slush. Perhaps that meaning is what appears in eijiro.

In modern English (certainly AmE), slush is strictly snow/ice/water. I don't that's what 泥濘る is.

Chatgpt says 泥濘る is an old form that is essentially replaced by 泥濘む in modern Japanese. ngrams seem to confirm. Daijs itself has [類語]ぬかるむ

Trying to find ngrams for this verb form, on balance I feel like [rare] is a fine choice over [dated] or [form]. I don't know if we'd consider it [arch], but maybe.

I was going to change this to "muddy slush" myself based on the dictionary entry, but the usages I found disagreed with this.

If you look at this original ref, it's slushed formed by snow on a river surface (no mud), with pics:
https://www.otaru-journal.com/2017/01/2017-0115-3/
小樽運河水面に雪が溶けずに残る”雪泥(せつでい)”という自然現

Otaru being in hokkaido, I assume they know what they are talking about.

So this might, in some contexts, be 雪 with the consistency of 泥 , rather than a mix of 雪 and 泥.

Here's a second example, also slush on a water surface (a lake this time), with pictures, and an explicit definition. Same style as first ref.
https://www.nature-center.jp/news/hotori20231218mattsu/
雪泥と言われる状態で、結氷温度近くまで冷却された湖や海に雪が降ると、どろどろしたおかゆ状になるようなのです。
