| Comments: | I was mainly a bit sceptical about the noun "dainty" being this obscure in AmE, since neither oxford nor webster note that it's chiefly BrE. However, I'm not an AmE native speaker as you are so I will obviously concede on that aspect. As for AI, I may also be a bit biased against it, but the chat you provided was an interesting read. This does seem reasonable to me now, thank you for the reply. |

| Refs: | A long, maybe interesting, but ultimately tangential conversation about "dainty". Only for the curious about AI https://chatgpt.com/share/69173d24-5a04-8008-a058-6261baff2491 |
|
| Comments: | I think having [form] is preferable to not having it, even if it's imperfect. This is certainly not a common oral form. I didn't add [form] myself only because of previous comments. Re:AI citations. Language analysis is a unique capability of LLMs. They didn't "learn" the answer by reading every reference book, and thus they have no citations to give. The answers about word meanings are essentially digital "intuition", informed by simultaneously processing every digitized text in existence and building weights between words in every language. Because of this, I think their "opinion" on language is generally worth consideration. Yes, hallucinations are possible(esp. when they don't know the answer). LLMs should never be a primary source. But if an LLM's analysis (esp. of *English*) agrees with my own intuition, that feels more weighty to me than my intuition on its own. If I think a word is obsolete in AmE, and chatgpt thinks it's obsolete in AmE, I feel pretty confident. That said, it is eminently possible to lead an LLM to any answer you want, even by accident. That's why I usually also link whole conversations so the questioning is opaque. I stand by my earlier comments on "dainty". It's not (just) gemini saying it's misleading for AmE speakers, I am. I don't think the split makes any difference on that. In AmE "dainty" will be read as an adjective meaning "small/petite" no matter what you put it next to. We'd have to tag it explicitly as (BrE) to avoid the problem (which we don't do). |

| Comments: | Sankoku now has its typical[文], and GendaiShinkoku notes 「文章語的に」. I think it may now be appropriate to have a form tag. But perhaps there still is a debate to be had given Robin's comments in 2020. Two senses are clearer. "cate" is archaic according to oxford and webster3. GG5 also mentions "epicurean food" but I don't think we need that as a gloss. I wouldn't mind having "dainty" as a lower gloss on sense two, there's really nothing "misleading" about that now, as gemini calls it, since that sense only has a [n] PoS. On a sidenote, I still think if AI is used as a reference, it should be asked to provide references and sources itself for what it's saying. These models are all extremely prone to making up information. |

| Comments: | Most references don't perform this split, and I personally don't think the glosses are different enough to warrant it. "To make a living (somewhere)" can have a very similar meaning to "to get by" or "to live (on)". 暮らす generally carries a nuance of daily activity and/or sustenance for the "living" sense, so having all these five glosses in one sense seems fine to me. The other JEs agree. On top of that "to get (along, by)" doesn't work in my eyes. |

But it’s not part of active vocabulary for most people under ~40, unless they write or read literature. It carries a slightly theatrical or “old-man storyteller” ring if used aloud. |
|
| Comments: | Encountered in a comic: (〇〇しても飽き足らない - would be still unsatisfied if going so far as to do 〇〇). We appear to have the wrong subject. The "having one's fill" component requires the subject to be human. Ngrams show that even as an adjective, the targets are human (人, 方, etc). Cursory searches on x.com and news show the same pattern. I like this example from x: 現状に飽き足らない心 飽きる has the nuance of having had one's fill of something but that still not being enough. Just glossing as "unsatisfied" doesn't communicate this nuance. I think "(still) not" helps a bit. "even after/with xyz, still not satisfied". 20~30-something college students/graduates reacted with some astonishment when I asked about the meaning. They said they would *never* use this term themselves (written or otherwise). It's obviously out there and in use, but [form] might be most accurate (chatgpt seems to think so). Rare in spoken dialog. |

| Comments: | The "island" itself is not the problem. I also have the reference in question, but apart from that I can't find anything about "island cars" in traffic control. Neither in English nor in Japanese. It has zero hits in the google ngrams and NINJAL corpora. Not in the automobile industry glossary either. I saw a handful of direct hits for "アイランドカー" in the NDL, but I can't confirm whether these actually relate to what's described in the reference. On top of that it indicates that it's a loanword, but, as mentioned above, I can't find any credit for this in English either. This seems too obscure. If there was a context or some form of media where this word was encountered with that meaning, it would greatly help if it were provided. |
