| Refs: | The proof is in the pudding: "prospect" and "outlook" are not used: https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/見晴らし view: 65 prospect: 2 outlook: 2 The prospect examples from reverso are: "The hotel has a good prospect. " (I would call this an error, unless it's from an old text) and "So then quickly, the comfortable walk has to do with the fact that all animals seek, simultaneously, prospect and refuge." ([dated, or extremely literary]) Eijiro gives "outlook" and "prospect", but all of their example collocations that use them are essentially unintelligible (to me) in modern American English. "a delightful prospect" is an opportunity, for example. "a delightful outlook" seem to refer to a positive and optimistic view on life". https://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=見晴らし |
|
| Comments: | It seems this term is non-figurative, and refers to a scenic view that is literally "pretty to look at"("a room with a view"). Both "prospect" and "outlook" are not commonly used in this sense in modern English, I don't think. Instead, they strongly suggest a figurative meaning ("outlook on life", "prospect for future success") that does not belong to this term.
The entry is clearer without them.
As an aside, my grandfather lived on a road called "Prospect Drive". I always thought "prospect" here meant "business opportunity"(or was from something like "gold prospector"). Just now I realize that the road was at the peak of a hill, and the name must have referred to the view. I really had no idea. |

| Refs: | Buzzword: shikaku (English language explanation) https://web-japan.org/trends/buzz/bz0508.html The term, meaning "assassin," may have ominous connotations, but it quickly became one of the most popular election keywords in the wake of the dissolution of the House of Representatives in the summer of 2005. The resulting election pitted Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro against rebel lawmakers of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party who voted against a package of bills to privatize Japan's postal services, which the prime minister has been pushing, in the lower house. Koizumi not only has denied party endorsement to those of the anti-postal privatization camp but took steps to drive them out of power. +2 more paragraphs. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/小泉劇場 郵政民営化法案に賛成する議員を公認候補とし、反対した議員には公認を与えず対立候補(刺客候補)... Chatgpt is crazy by the way: I asked it: does japanese have a colloquial term to describe a candidate fielded by a political party to oust an incumbent of the same party? ChatGPT said: Yes, Japanese has a colloquial term for such a situation: "刺客" (shikaku), which literally means "assassin." This term is used metaphorically in politics to describe a candidate fielded by a political party to challenge and replace an incumbent within the same party. The term gained popularity in the 2005 Japanese general election, when then-Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi sent "shikaku" candidates... |

| Comments: | Did too much reading for the 刺客候補 entry. Refs explain the change. Just as an observation on modern usage, on my search for a pronunciation of 刺客候補 (didn't find one), I stumbled on a broadcast on pro-Trump (親トランプ) and anti-Trump(反トランプ) candidates squaring off, along with a big pic of Trump's face with 刺客 written beside it. The race was Liz Cheney(the "traditional" Republican, now a rebel) vs Trump-backed Harriet Hageman. It was a pretty big deal in U.S. news at the time. The device used in this broadcast to present graphics is something to be hold. Trump's face + 刺客 unfolds 5 seconds in https://youtu.be/5kH1aC6rQ5Q?t=10 I'd note that the term "assassin" would make no sense for a candidate from an opposing party. That's just an ordinary election. The party is trying to "take out" someone who isn't toeing the line. |

| Comments: | Does someone here speak a dialect where "mouth of the wound" is common? Never heard this. An image search doesn't even turn up a single injury. Default "mouth of the wound" results in a google book search are from the 1800s. GG5 authors might have been familiar with older work... Either way, even "opening of" is rarely included in translation(see reverso, eijiro). It's only really important here to be precise about the nuance, so I'd say we don't need to do that twice. If you want to pursue it, daijs and sankoku both claim a second, figurative sense, though it seems much more limited than in English. |

| Comments: | Kokugos, eijiro both point to a fairly specific nuance of "recovering from a setback/deficit". I think the former glosses were ambiguous alone; I don't think 挽回 can be applied to "one's health", for example. Encountered as: とりあえず、最初の悪印象は挽回 "Well, now that I've rebounded from my initial bad impression" There's something here that makes the noun "redemption" a bad gloss. Eijiro uses "redeem/redeeming" a lot, but never redemption. You see the same in reverso. I found this prefix search notable: 名誉を挽回 1945 名誉の挽回 42 There are a lot of context-dependent English glosses that could be chosen. I'm not married to anything in particular. |

| Comments: | Many more refs added at the xref with updated gloss. 刺客 seems used far more often alone than in this construction, so I think the xref is in the right direction. Here because I encountered 刺客 in the wild, pronounced しかく. Seems doubtful that 刺客候補 gets a special pronunciation preference. sankoku has two entries for 刺客 oddly enough, and しかく points to しきゃく, which is the main entry. But furigana.info *never* gives しきゃく. Maybe sankoku is just wrong this time. |

| Comments: | There's a reason for the xref. 刺客 literally means "assassin", it has been used metaphorically in Japanese. We have not included a [lit] gloss on this entry, so that is not clear. If someone searches for 刺客戦術, they will not find the underlying entry without a reference. (Some resources are more liberal than others about displaying back-refs). 刺客戦術 is derived from 刺客, not the other way around. I'm fine with a unidirectional gloss, but I think it should be in the other direction. |

The Mainichi Shimbun analyzed that while the outflow of talent to the main party continues, the Liberal Democratic Party, which is adopting "assassin tactics" against opponents of the postal privatization bill, "seems to have no choice but to rely on bureaucrats as "ready-to-use assets" who are well versed in policy." |
|
| Comments: | No book results prior to 2005. See comments on 刺客候補, this seems to be the same thing. You could add a [lit] assassination tactics But there does not appear to be a "word" indicating literal assassination in any sort of common use, including historically. |
