| Refs: | The proof is in the pudding: "prospect" and "outlook" are not used: https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/見晴らし view: 65 prospect: 2 outlook: 2 The prospect examples from reverso are: "The hotel has a good prospect. " (I would call this an error, unless it's from an old text) and "So then quickly, the comfortable walk has to do with the fact that all animals seek, simultaneously, prospect and refuge." ([dated, or extremely literary]) Eijiro gives "outlook" and "prospect", but all of their example collocations that use them are essentially unintelligible (to me) in modern American English. "a delightful prospect" is an opportunity, for example. "a delightful outlook" seem to refer to a positive and optimistic view on life". https://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=見晴らし |
|
| Comments: | It seems this term is non-figurative, and refers to a scenic view that is literally "pretty to look at"("a room with a view"). Both "prospect" and "outlook" are not commonly used in this sense in modern English, I don't think. Instead, they strongly suggest a figurative meaning ("outlook on life", "prospect for future success") that does not belong to this term.
The entry is clearer without them.
As an aside, my grandfather lived on a road called "Prospect Drive". I always thought "prospect" here meant "business opportunity"(or was from something like "gold prospector"). Just now I realize that the road was at the peak of a hill, and the name must have referred to the view. I really had no idea. |

| Comments: | Aligning provisionally with the xref. I read the notes, I see we kept the GG5 gloss, and that there might be nuance differences. Perhaps for women, they're just indecisive, not merely about love. In that sense, the GG5 gloss is better. But I don't think this and the xref should be translated in isolation. Either the translations should be parallel, or there should be an explicit identification as to how the nuances are different. Otherwise it just looks like we've made a mistake, and the user learns nothing about the nuance of either term. If the old GG5 gloss is preferred, I'd suggest doing something explicit with the note. Maybe something like: [note="compared to the orig. 男心と秋の空, there is a broader implication that women are fickle in general"] If you google "A Woman's Heart Is As Fickle As", you'll find the more literal "A Woman's heart is as fickle as the autumn sky". I think I prefer this one, and it's closer to the original. Google finds it in the 1985 ザ・ニホンゴ, 石川島播磨重工業株式会社 |
