daijs has 2 senses, but its sense two is "2 不良少年少女。また、やくざなどの下っ端。"
I think it's best to separate that into two because when referring to a small-time yakuza, they don't necessarily have to be young.

If I'm understanding correctly, a new moon is not visible to the naked eye. I think the Japanese word for "new moon" would be 新月, which the kokugos describe as 見えない or 見えにくい.

三日月, on the other hand, is described in all the kokugos as 弓形の細い月. Despite what the JEs say, I don't think "new moon" is a correct gloss.

築港

1. [n,vs,vt,vi]
▶ harbor construction
2. [n]
▶ man-made harbor

Conjugations

History:
6. A 2024-09-03 01:25:03  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
We still do it when it's helpful for reverse lookups but that's not really the case here. One spelling is sufficient.

harbor 14117965
harbour 7744714
  Comments:
I think we can stay with harbor. I used to be keen to include both types of spelling to enable reverse lookups. I now don't think it's sich a big issue.
4. A* 2024-08-31 13:02:17
  Comments:
I get the intent of including both "harbor" and "harbour" but mixing spelling conventions like this will look like a mistake to the average user, so I think it should be avoided.

  Comments:
In Otaru, a city in Hokkaido, there are several ports, one of which, quite apparently created by the (in Japan rather popular) coastal landfill method, is called 築港 (the adjacent railway station has the same name). I would like to suggest that 築港 does not only mean "harbour construction" (i.e., the process of building a port) but also "man-made port/harbour" or "constructed port/harbour" (i.e., the result of said process).

The kokugos all split the "new moon" (見えない) and "crescent moon" (細い月) meanings into two senses. Shinmeikai describes the latter as a 広義.
Since these are distinct concepts in English as well, I think we should also split.

E.g. sankoku:
  ①陰暦一日の月。太陽の方角にあって月の裏側に光が当たるため、見えない。朔。(↔満月)
  ②陰暦二日目、三日目の、細い月。

Yes, it seems to be from "flag get" and relates to fighting. Would need to be a new entry.

I feel like "the first of the month" in English mirrors how ついたち works in Japanese better, because it's the standard idiomatic English expression for this concept. It clearly refers to a specific, established day, just like ついたち does in Japanese, and avoids the slightly overly literal feel of "first day of the month."

Happy first of the month.

  Comments:
sorry for commenting on a recently edited entry, but i think it can be improved
smk does say that ついたち can be used adverbially
一日/いっぴ is only used for sense 1, esp. in a business context (sankoku example, meikyo, shinkoku)
朔日/さくじつ is only used for sense 1, daijr, kanken, iwakoku specify 陰暦 (daijrs also kinda implies this by saying "朔月。「卯月朔日」") but not for ついたち - i also suspect it's more dated/formal as most refs redirect to ついたち and shinkoku tags it as 文
even if the archaic second sense is removed, it feels to me that splitting out the readings would make for better and more complete entries

i believe sentence #209505 was actually meant for 1日/いちにち instead of this entry, but the reading or entry id wasn't specified
the audio link in wwwjdic contains "kana=ついたち&kanji=1日" which means it was probably meant for ついたち so if my proposal is accepted ついたち should remain in this 2311109 entry
i can't actually confirm the pronunciation because when i try to play the audio it only says something along the lines of "audio not available, will be uploaded shortly"

"stub" isn't right.
The third sense is definitely archaic. I don't think it's needed.

>Until mid-2021, if the kanji field of an entry included both kanji and katakana for part of a form, e.g. アカバナ科 and 赤花科, then the reading field typically had matching kana forms, in this case アカバナか and あかばなか, with restrictions to align the kanji/readings pairs. This was done to assist with the generation of the legacy EDICT format. This is no longer a major issue and it is now considered acceptable to have a single reading (i.e. あかばなか) in such cases.

This leads to very awkward or completely misleading readings, though.
Using JMdict-based dictionaries for Yomichan/Yomitan gives "あかばな" as furigana for "アカバナ" in アカバナ科, which is ugly and redundant (and separates the entry from the other アカバナ科 entries which use the correct reading).
Using jisho.org, アカバナ科 has "あかばなか" as the reading for "科".
