I do understand what you mean but what I'm saying is that it doesn't really have to be read that way. A+ and A++ are different from SS and SSS as we actually have SS and SSS entries - that point here.

What I mean is that "SABCDEF" doesn't include "SS" or "SSS", so "S" can't be anything other than the top rank on that scale.
I don't think this is any different from describing "A" as the top grade even though A+ or A++ may exist.

Is the (usu.) really confusing? usually the top grade (on a SABCDEF scale), [sometimes the third grade]

But not top rank when thr scale goes up to SSS, still. I think it's a shame to not cover this usage at all.

OK, in Tatoeba the examples for 熱湯 are now locked to the ねっとう reading. As it will take a couple of weeks for these to reach WWWJDIC, I have hand-edited it there.

(in spring) could be snipped out and change nothing about the definition, but since this serves predominantly as a haiku image for spring, it seems odd to leave that out.  Stabling "in the winter" is critical to the definition, otherwise letting them out in spring has no particular meaning.  Not all horses are kept indoors in winter, this is why 雪国 is mentioned specifically in nikk, and in haiku apparently the horses and cows can still see snow in the surrounding hills. This is an event that marks the transition from winter to spring.

Pretty much all google matches are haiku collections. Would be inclined to xref 
  [see=1222820] (季語 seasonal word in haiku), or to note it somehow in the entry, but I see no evidence that this is currently done elsewhere.
