Proposing that the adj-ku tag be reinstated - the inflections are defective but they still fit the paradigm.

The argument that led to its removal is not sound, dictionaries have it tagged as 助動 because that is the part of speech they lump any inflectable auxiliary under, they at most stick a note saying 「形容型」or something at times. Even べし and ない are listed as 助動 by kokugos, and they have the full adjective paradigm.

Well, what I proposed was somewhat of an in-between; it did not go on to list every nuance but instead split both into two groups: those that work grammatically as a copula, and those that do not.
However, the new sense was in part based on the meaning as it does not work as a copula in its meaning either.

In any case, I myself am not entirely sure it is needed, I proposed it as I considered that trying to reconcile "それがだ" with the notion of 'being' could be confusing, and that the additional sense would immediately dispel any doubts.
10. A* 2024-08-13 00:41:22  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
This proposed edit brings up the issue of what the approach should be for these sorts of entries. Do we basically state what the Japanese terms mean, or do we go into the intricacies of their function in Japanese grammar?
For です/だ:
- GG5 and other JEs take the simple approach, glossing them as "be" and with examples using "is".
- Daijirin has a long introductory explanation beginning with "丁寧の意をもつ断定の助動詞。" and then goes on to six senses.
I favour the simpler approach as in most JEs. I propose switching back to the previous single gloss. I'm comfortable with "aux-v".
I take a similar position with the だ entry.

Could we add だ as a reading to 2654250(past た) and trim [2] and [3] from this entry? They are completely different from [1] in everything from etymology to grammar to meaning.

Added the [aux-v] tag to [1] as all 4 kokugos above classify it as a 助動詞, it descends from a verb, and it is inflectable.
Added new sense from 『(6)終止形は間投助詞的にも用いられる。この場合,助詞「な」「ね」を伴って用いることもある。「われわれは〈だ〉,もっと慎重に〈だ〉,行動すべきなのだ」」』; as it no longer functions as a copula and is never inflected, I tagged is as [prt], but [exp] would probably do as well.

Thanks, I have not much more to add.
Just that maybe "(forms plain conjunction) and" should be split into "and; forms plain conjunction".
And I would prefer having the examples for sense 6 and 7 in the gloss with brackets instead of as a usage note. But if noone else thinks so they may as well stay like that. It doesn't hurt.

I've confined the で note to the front to stop all the duplication. I've also split the 6th sense into two and moved the "as in" examples to naotes.
I'll approve and reopen for a bit.

   > You are absolutely right to point out that っ is the 音便 stem. I apologise, I'm a bit absent-minded sometimes.
I didn't intend on having all of them as well. I have removed って and the corresponding notes.

An argument could be made for including って, いで, etc. as search-only forms, but I think that'd be stretching the purpose of the tag a bit.

In any case, I believe that the changes you have proposed in your previous take are very much relevant.
They are supported by refs and can be substantiated by examples. I think that's about all an entry in a dictionary needs.

That's it from my side for now, let's see what others think.
If there's anything else still off about the current version please say so.

I too feel it's more of a grammar point than the usual form of expression we'd include, however I still think it's useful as an entry. That's why I approved it initially. I think it can stay.
9. A* 2024-08-08 04:10:25  Non
  Comments:
I disagree, I do not see how 助詞+の would be any more obvious to a beginner than any 助詞+は combination - in fact, I would say it is less because where as では is often introduced early with ではない, での, からの and ての are not.
If the dictionary hopes to be useful, it will need to cross over grammar and morphology at times, the grammars of english and Japanese are just too wildly different for many expressions to be taught in isolation - and yet, that is not the case here, all we have is a translation, we are not mentioning grammar nor morphology within the entry.

And again, we have many entries analogous to this situation in the [exp] tag:そう言えば・1982210、くじを選ぶ・2406890、その人・ 2832864、その事・2665570、ごく普通・2861349、ずっと前に・2038440、す可き・1006200、are all the sum of the parts, not in any kokugo I own, and are still included within the corpus. And those are just a few I gathered from the く up to そ pages.
8. A* 2024-08-08 02:27:07  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
では, をば and からに are in the kokugos and have non-obvious meanings whereas での is just the sum of its parts. I don't think many beginners would have difficulty parsing it in context.
To me this feels more like a grammar point than an expression that belongs in a dictionary.
7. A* 2024-08-07 04:46:20  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I think it's useful for beginners, per Non. I don't it's reasonable to just show a beginner our entries for で and の and expect them to figure out what での means/how it's used. Maybe we should have entries for からの, までの, からへ and への as well.

”五人でのお茶会” = Quantificational delimitative
”3時間での小旅行” = Temporal quantificational delimitative
”器具でのご使用” = Instrumental

Note: none of these sentence fragments are my own, they were pulled from various different google results of "での"
  Comments:
We do have entries for combinations of particles, では, をば, からに, etc. are just that. What is true is that we do not have 格助詞+の constructions, but we do have multiple entries which are just inflected terms made from identifiable morphemes that are analogous to this situation.
Personally, I think this entry might have some value for an unexperienced person who runs the risk of thinking it is a single morpheme and going off on a wild goose chase for some obscure particle called "での".
Consider, for example, that students are often taught that の attaches to nouns with no mention of the possibility of these particle compounds.

Now, I realised that this entry was incomplete as で's delimitative and instrumental uses can also be used attributively. I added [2] to cover the instrumental uses and [3] to cover the delimitatives but I am not sure how clear the first gloss of [3] is.
Maybe we could drop [3] by saying that something like「五人でのお茶会」is an extension of [2]: "Tea meeting by 5 people" = "Tea-party of 5 people" but it seems a bit of a stretch for something like "30分での判定".
Alternatively, all glosses could be replaced with an explanation of the etymology and cross references, that should be enough for the reader to assemble the meaning by themselves while avoiding any confusion.

The sentence "因みに森鴎外は口偏の方を好んだようです。" worked in the Text Glossing. It broke 森鴎外 into 森 + 鴎外 because 森 is in JMdict, and the correct match there takes priority over the lower-ranking one of 森鴎外 in JMnedict.

in the following context:
"日本では、明治時代から[口加口非]と珈琲(初出は江戸時代の宇田川榕庵『博物語彙』)が並んで用いられました。因みに森鴎外は口偏の方を好んだようです。それが次第に中国とは異なって玉偏の方が選ばれ、定着しました。この玉偏は、コーヒー豆を玉に擬えたものとも言われています。"
Text Glossing did not parse the name, and I confirmed it is not yet in the database.
Question: is it encyclopedic (and thus preferably omitted) that 森鴎外 Mori Ōgai is the pen name of a person who was named 森 林太郎 Mori Rintarō by his parents, or is this kind of information desired/required in the name dictionary?
