  Comments:
Well, what I proposed was somewhat of an in-between; it did not go on to list every nuance but instead split both into two groups: those that work grammatically as a copula, and those that do not.
However, the new sense was in part based on the meaning as it does not work as a copula in its meaning either.

In any case, I myself am not entirely sure it is needed, I proposed it as I considered that trying to reconcile "それがだ" with the notion of 'being' could be confusing, and that the additional sense would immediately dispel any doubts.
10. A* 2024-08-13 00:41:22  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
This proposed edit brings up the issue of what the approach should be for these sorts of entries. Do we basically state what the Japanese terms mean, or do we go into the intricacies of their function in Japanese grammar?
For です/だ:
- GG5 and other JEs take the simple approach, glossing them as "be" and with examples using "is".
- Daijirin has a long introductory explanation beginning with "丁寧の意をもつ断定の助動詞。" and then goes on to six senses.
I favour the simpler approach as in most JEs. I propose switching back to the previous single gloss. I'm comfortable with "aux-v".
I take a similar position with the だ entry.

my problem with duplicating the kanji forms is that it makes search slightly less immediate
"日ぐらし" search-only form is here and not in the other entry, but results on google are mostly related to the 一日中 sense
we obviously could have "日ぐらし" in both the entries, but only having it in the 一日中 sense entry seems less confusing to me

btw not related to my previous comment but i think 日暮 is [io], in none of my refs

Could we add だ as a reading to 2654250(past た) and trim [2] and [3] from this entry? They are completely different from [1] in everything from etymology to grammar to meaning.

Added the [aux-v] tag to [1] as all 4 kokugos above classify it as a 助動詞, it descends from a verb, and it is inflectable.
Added new sense from 『(6)終止形は間投助詞的にも用いられる。この場合,助詞「な」「ね」を伴って用いることもある。「われわれは〈だ〉,もっと慎重に〈だ〉,行動すべきなのだ」」』; as it no longer functions as a copula and is never inflected, I tagged is as [prt], but [exp] would probably do as well.

'No case was made for any of these edits.'?
I would have thought the edits would have made the case for themselves.
A "all-purpose kitchen knife" gloss, means that 文化包丁 refers to any all-purpose kitchen knife. So chef's knives, santoku, bunka, as well as 中華包丁. (I just noticed, that I forgot to ref 中華包丁)
Needless to say, it does not.
万能包丁 does, but 文化包丁 and 三徳/三徳包丁 do not.

'We don't usually have "a type of ..." glosses.'
Why not?
Saying it isn't what you tend to do, isn't an argument for not doing it. It doesn't make any kind of case, for not doing it.
Saying "a type of", makes clear that this is a specific type of all-around kitchen knife, rather than an umbrella term for any and all all-around kitchen knives
How do you avoid that problem, without "a type of"? And without that solution, being more lengthy?

Also, while I get not having all the refs (as I said in the gyūtō entry, I did it because of your inclusion of a ref there, and attempting to adjusting things to make that work, as you appeared to suggest), I don't really get why bunka and santoku wouldn't ref each other.
They are very similar, with the only real difference being the tip. (there are some other points where they _tend_ to differ, but which are only tendencies, with countless counterexamples. The tip is the one and only defining difference)

And from the 万能包丁 entry (why it was mentioned there, rather than here, I have no idea):
"bunka knife 0"
What do you mean by that?
It's certainly not an indication of search results, as you get plenty of those.
It certainly isn't a _common_ term, but to say it isn't used in English, at all...

If my edit can be rejected, because I didn't make a case for it, then you cannot reject it (after a clear and thorough case for it, being presented), without any hint of a case, for the rejection.
Not without being completely inconsistent, dishonest, and hypocritical.
And surely you don't want to be that?
(and, again, the only reason I didn't present a case for it, was because I felt that it was as unnecessary, and the case was obvious and completely uncontroversial. Clearly it was ...and so I presented the case)

Not that I can imagine how a case can be made, against my edit. What in my comments, making the case for it, is wrong? How is it wrong? How are the statements, not just stating indisputable facts? Well, aside form the questions, that is ...and what possible answer is there to those, that goes against my position?
Then again, it's not like I haven't been proven wrong before.
By merely rejecting my case, with no hint of a reason, however, one leaves it fully un-disproven.
Completely undisputed.

To repeat the case, so it's visible here (including the references):

When you refuse to talk, but instead resort to force, to silence the person who disagrees, you prove that you don't believe your right. That you know yourself to be wrong. That you are intellectually, and just generally, dishonest and cowardly. That you're weak, pathetic, immature, inconsistent, irrational, immoral, and hypocritical.
You, Stephen Kraus, are a pathetic piece of shit.
You get your way, because you are in the position of power.
Because the phrase "with great power comes great responsibility" is only true, in term of ethics.
Not in terms of how things actually function: With great power, comes great impunity.

You get your way here, sure
