Quickly realised that the previous notes were incomplete, sorry about that.
Opted to use 未然形 rather than -nai stem due to the existence of the old せさせる form that hardly sees any use; せ would not be commonly identified with a -nai stem. Dismissed irrealis or imperfective since most people will not know those terms where as 未然形 can be looked up within the dictionary.

Addressing the points in 2020-09-01 20:16:58, This is considered by every Japanese source I have looked at as the only remaining 二段 verb in modern Japanese and it does conjugate, even if the only provable instances of conjugation are the identical 連体形 and 終止形, both forms are still formally distinguished by 国語 grammars by their use much like english tells apart past 'read' from non-past 'read' by pronunciation. Non-provable instances of conjugation would be 未然形 and 連用形 as they would be completely indiscernible from える. Finally, there is the provable case of the 仮定形, but it is almost never used: ありうれば returns measly 33 results from the N-gram and a google search only 407 - though you will see that it is indeed the 仮定形 if you stop to read some of phrases found by google.

The refs are inconsistent about whether the first sense is [vi] or [vt]. Iwakoku and sankoku have it tagged as both.

This seems to be one such entry. I don't think there are too many others.

In addition to meikyo, "胎む" is also recorded in kanjipedia and gendai reikai. I don't think there's a problem with making it [rK].

You can find even more kanji forms (胚む・娠む・姙む・肧む) for this word if you look through various kanwas. I think we have to draw a line somewhere.

This is strictly morphology that the reader can apply to their use of the language, for example: knowing it is made from ん and what ん derives from allows them to correctly predict the existence of ませぬ - or - if someone learns of ぬ through ません and learns from ぬ's entry its function/meaning and how it is morphologically added to other words, then they would be equipped to locate and understand every single instance of ぬ or ん they find from thereon, as well as to use it themselves. Is this not a benefit for the reader?
This is in line with the editorial policy that lists "where there is a derivational relationship between words that it is useful to highlight, e.g. between かっけー and 格好いい, or between オケる and 空オケ." as a cross-reference that can enhance the value of the entry; this is fundamentally the same as the given examples - and with ぬ being a productive morpheme, morphology notes and references would be even more useful.
Now, I do agree that it is not all etymology and/or morphology that should be added: here there is a positive impact for the learner's understanding and practice. Contrast this with something such as adding "changed over time from まゐらす to まらする, まする, culminating in ます" to the ます entry. The latter would be a truly useless historical etymology that does not help readers to understand what something means, how it comes to mean it, nor how to use it.


I understand that the dictionary is not here to teach morphology, but it is here to teach Japanese and morphology just cannot not be useful in such a highly agglutinative language - in fact, it is not only useful, it is required for its use: it is the necessity of morphology that led you to add "after the -masu stem of a verb" to this very entry, it is morphology that dictates we have separate verb classes and it is morphology that distinguishes verbs from adjectives and tells you how to use each. 
If we are ignoring any mention of etymological and/or morphological information and concern ourselves only with self-contained semantic/functional minimalism, we might as well remove: the left half of the note in this entry along with all 3 cross-references, the cross-reference to 格好いい in かっけー, as well as any other similarly substantiated note or reference in any and all entries. We could even remove the tags for 動詞 and 形容詞 and neatly bundle them under a category for 述語 since that is the all-encompassing superset. Nonetheless, I think you will agree that would make the dictionary less useful as it would lose much of its power to teach usage - which directly affects ability to teach identification and thus, comprehension - and completely lose any information about derivative connections, all because of morphology and etymology.

Do you believe that usage, identification, and relations are not something that a cross-linguistic dictionary should seek to teach? Is it not what the reader seeks to learn? If you do think so, then what does it seek to teach? Raw semantic correspondence? If you give yourself the bother to think about these questions, consider: Every time someone conjugates something, they are engaging with morphology. Every time you add an [adj] tag to something, you are teaching them about it.

Ironically, the first three references exhibit exactly what I was talking of: Daijiring speaks of its aged and literary disposition, Shinsen highlights its use in dialects while Sankoku says it sounds theatrical - three quite different descriptions, and none of them wrong.

I do realise your concern is elsewhere, but more on that later.

I understand your position: we can neither apply every tag at once nor write a colossal note explaining every detail - but surely we can list that which is most common and/or important.
Normally I would heartily agree with that, the obstacle is that in this case none of the many flavours ぬs or んs are particularly uncommon or rare to find (except maybe informal/colloquial ぬ).
A very good example is precisely the dialectal ん: in absolute numbers, I would wager it might be the most numerous instance of ん... but I would also wager that it is not the most prevalent ん within the limits of standard Japanese, even when you disregard ません.

One could make an argument for either or both - I am opting for neither.

This situation can be spoken of in analogy to the many groups personal pronouns: e.g. わたし、おれ、ぼく and わたくし all intersect in being first person pronouns - at their core function - but each undeniably attributes a very distinct personality to the referent and/or atmosphere of the context in which they are employed.
This is the same with ぬ・ん, and constitutes the differences from ない that you spoke of previously - not in function or meaning, but in "character".
That as it may be, where ぬ and ん differ from the pronouns is that while the connotations of each pronoun are largely cast in stone according to the word itself, the exact character attributed to the speaker (and/or atmosphere) by ぬ・ん is not so, and varies wildly according to the setting.

Since we can neither predict what setting they will be encountered in (and thus the "variant" the reader is looking at) and nor can we easily overcome the throes of weighing what should be indicated and what is to be omitted, I say: the negatives ぬ・ん are the superset which includes the archaic negatives ぬ・ん, the dialectal negatives ぬ・ん, the frozen (in set expressions) negatives ぬ・ん... et cetera; so we might as well just go with one-size-fits-all.

Firstly, I realize that "colloquial in standard Japanese" for ん is not very helpful since ません is where a learner will most likely first encounter ん, that not being colloquial usage at all. Hence me just suggesting it rather than editing the entry.

I also do not believe that there is a certain stiffly defined difference, that is rarely the case.
Without getting into all the context examples you have listed, which are reasonable but beyond the scope of a simple dictionary entry, I think it can be said that usage of ない and usage of ぬ・ん (and their respective connotations), in standard Japanese, are different. Multiple references outline this fact in their notes for ぬ. 
A learner that encounters ぬ・ん and happens to see this entry may surmise that he can just use ぬ in ない's stead, since they would both be unmarked entries.
I think it can also be said that ん is at least in some respect a "lesser" form of ぬ, as it usually the case with contracted or abbreviated forms (apart from ません). 


Furthermore, I believe that the widespread dialectal usage of ん instead of ない cannot be as easily dismissed, as it spans large parts of the country.
I certainly do not wish to make that fact the focal point of this entry, but in my eyes it would be somewhat disingenious to completely disregard it if we already include ん.
Thus I would personally like for this entry to, in one way or another, include information regarding the やや古風・文章的 aspect (especially of ぬ), and the dialectal aspect of ん specifically.
As per the visible dichotomy of ない・ん in the 方言地図 on 否定助動詞, in which ぬ plays a rather marginal role.
This being the main reason I proposed a separate sense for ん.

They are interchangeable in practice and I personally do not think it worthwhile to distinguish ぬ from ん; I find the differences in between them are not sufficient or consistent enough to warrant another sense - it is purely a matter of style and is not so stiffly defined; with the exception of ぬ never really being just colloquial (at least as far as I know, maybe there is a dialect somewhere), whether ぬ or ん are seen as formal, colloquial, dated or even as archaisms depends heavily on the context in which they are encountered: Old-fashioned literature pulling out all the old conjugations and auxiliaries? Archaisms. Co-occurs with an honorific? Formal or both formal and dated (ません vs ませぬ). Taking a stroll over the 近畿 region? Colloquial. Grandpa uses it and nobody else does? Dated colloquial... etc.

Previous note had the following issues: 
1. Made no mention of せる connecting to サ変 nor of させる connecting to カ変 and to the original 未然形 of サ変.
2. Using the term imperfective form to refer to the 未然形 is not good idea as the same term is sometimes used to refer to verbs in the non-past form.
   I have tried to address both of the above issues by adding a mention to カ変 and changing the terminology to -nai stem where applicable.  However, I felt the need to try to specify the inflection for サ変 as -nai stem does not clearly indicate さ nor せ, and saying irrealis or 未然形 would leave it ambiguous between 2-4 options.

3. In "Senses 1-3 can be abbreviated as す" the "Senses 1-3" part can be removed as those are all senses in the entry. I have chosen to remove that altogether as this can be addressed with an entry for the abbreviation itself, similar to how it is done with ねー for ない.

4. The description of the させる・せる that means permission found in [2] is misleading as "having been granted" only applies to させられる, させてもらう, and their like: causative-passive or causative-benefactive constructions. This is a problem as the meaning of permission occurs even when せる・させる is by itself: 食べさせる can be someone physically forcing someone to eat, or it could just be someone giving someone food or allowing then to do so by some others means.
I have changed its definition accordingly and have also removed the note as keeping those examples without examples of せる・させる used in isolation may lead readers to believe that causative-passive/benefactive constructions are only causative constructions. I have also removed the [hum] tag as the permissive sense is not inherently humble and I imagine it was only there due to the aforementioned conflation of this meaning with causative-benefactive forms.

Minor changes: changed "causative" to "causative voice" so readers may more easily research the term if needed, and changed ～あら(さ)せられる to あら〜せられる as both options cannot exist simultaneously and I doubt that who wrote this intended the verb to be 荒らす.
 
Notes: Though せさせる for サ変 is all but gone from modern standard Japanese, the forms ぜさせる and ぜられる are still considered the grammatically correct forms for the derived ザ変 verbs; however, those forms are extremely rare as ずる verbs have been supplanted by their じる counterparts and are infrequent themselves, albeit not yet gone.
Aside from that, I opted to use サ変 and カ変 instead of "suru/kuru class" in order to slightly shorten the usage note.

I would question what the typical user is like, what they look for when using a dictionary, and whether the first two questions can be reliably answered at all.

Anyhow, disregard the morphology for a moment, I feel the functional aspects of the explanatory gloss and the [conj] tag were overlooked. There is nothing in the entry to suggest that ず is a conjunction, and not treating it as one will yield the wrong understanding of a phrase. 

The translation "Not doing" is a progressive negation while ず is a negation, a conjunction, and only progressive if the structure it is negating is. "Not" is a closer translation, but is still missing the conjunction part.
Going off of this entry as is, one could very well take a 食べず as "not eating" instead of "does not/will not eat and..."
Furthermore, with only an [aux-v] tag, a reader will most likely think this is the 連体形・終止形 dictionary form that ends a sentence or pre-modifies a noun. This is only worsened by ず ending with a -u, which is usually a characteristic of those forms.
That is not good as treating it as the dictionary form will analyse something such as「驚きもせず私達をながく見つめていた」with 驚きもせず as a premodifier for 私達. 

I tried to to address this with the notes on the 連用形, the tag and the explanatory gloss, I can see why all at once may seem superfluous but hold that at least one is required to solve the matter.
I will insist on the addition of the tag and the explanatory note, with the latter either as a complement or substitute for the translation as "not doing" does not do a good job of relaying what this word does. 
If nothing else, at least the tag should be kept since it is what the word is - but the note instead of or along with the translation could be immediately useful to anyone who does not know what a conjunction is.

As for morphology: it already occupies a place in many entries, notes like the -nai stem note here are morphological in nature and I can only imagine these are accepted while others are not as they allow identification through the morphology of the surrounding items. 
With that standard in mind, since the current entry runs into the suru class -nai stem problem of leaving a reader unable to identify せず and instead implicating しず, I propose changes to it in line with what was done to せる・させる.

I don't think the proposed revision is very useful to the typical user of this dictionary. There may be scope somewhere for detailed etymological and morphological information about these sorts of terms, but I don't think this is the place.

After some consideration, the translation on [1] should be changed as conjunctive ず is not properly represented by it: this ず conflates coordination and negation into a single morpheme, english has no such morpheme and thus lacks a direct translation. I have considered something such as "does/will not... and..." but that seemed confusing without an example sentence so I opted for an explanatory definition that is, hopefully, clear enough.

I realise I have forgotten to say why I have removed the notes on connection: I did so as I assume the notes will compel a reader to click the cross-reference to ぬ, leading them to learn that from there.

An additional idea that came to mind: this entry could be merged with ぬ by adding ず as a reading and adding this glossary to its, it would only need a few "as ～ず" or "as ～ぬ" to be added to the notes, the same could be done with ん. This practice could be applied to merge other entries that are variations of the same thing and with that trim down the number of individual entries with the benefit of consolidating currently scattered items under their corresponding set.

Since constructions like 〇からず、 are possible I searched in NINJAL's SHC (昭和・平成書き言葉) Corpus for instances of "｛から｝｛ず｝｛、｝". 
It returned "only" 15 results, of which the ず is analyzed as belonging to 文語助動詞　ず instead of ぬ for some of those meager 15.
Though I assume (correct me in case I spout rubbish) カリ活用 was already a bit out of fashion at that time.
In any case I'm just throwing this information out there, perhaps it's relevant perhaps it isn't. 


Another minor change is, as it's already pretty difficult to keep a general consistency with these notes, to have "after the X form of X" instead of "connects to X stem of X".
Purely based on the fact that there are as of now 195 (maybe a few false hits) entries with notes using "after the", compared to 3 using "connects to" (2 without this entry).
Unless there are objections of course.

This is similar to the fix Jim added to the て entry (2345109). The only thing I changed was adding brackets to make it more programmatically readable (e.g., via regex). Obviously the most appropriate answer would be to add a new element to denote entry-wide notes, however, this works for now, and keeps compatibility with existing tools.

I agree that the repeated note is unsightly, this is again the problem wherein we have no means to distinguish a sense-specific note from an entry-wide one. 

二段; I would not worry too much about them. Not only would that mean we still need to add in 四段、ナ変、ラ変 and the ancient 未然形 of adjectives that is so old not even Old Japanese used it, but also the point of the note is more so to clarify to readers unfamiliar with ず that the connection to サ変 is せず and never しず, as would be otherwise implied by "-nai stem". 
In any case, I will leave an alternative entry without the repeating note at the bottom of this commentary.

In response to Sombrero:
The universality of the relations that can be expressed by a verbal coordinator (here ず) has less to do with the coordinator and more to do with the many possible relations between the propositions being joined, which are contextually inferred but may have downstream semantic and syntactical effects, such as the autonomously advancing reference time and subordinating-like set sentence order imposed on this example:
"John walked in and sat down"
In theory, if this is just a coordination, I should also be able to say "John sat down and walked in" to mean the same, but I cannot - we infer a sequence which that would violate.
And undeniably, few have ever mastered the art of sitting down and only then walking in.

And all this translates into: I do not think we should be too worried about listing every possible relation between the conjuncts since it is not ず providing them anyway. Just the basic coordination and maybe a few of the more common inferred relations such as 'without' are likely enough.

Lastly, yes - ず is hard to gloss. This is so because we have no 1:1 correspondent to it in English, even less so than normally.
ず negates and coordinates. We have things that negate and things that coordinate, but not both (actually we have 'nor', but it can only join two negatives whereas ず is not so picky).
This is perfectly illustrated by the translations you chose at the end, both of them contain at least one conjunctive and one negative that come from ず, but in both cases they need to be separated and put into different positions in the phrase, which gives the impression that ず is lost in translation but in reality it is being spliced.
Thence both you and I feel this need to leave an explanation somewhere, even the most literal translations such as 'not... and...' seem fuzzy as they do not clearly confer the underlying knowledge that 'not' stands for the negation of one clause and 'and' stands for conjunction with the following one.

Still, I will make one final argument against it: compounds from which the meaning is easily deductible by the constituent morphemes and in which those morphemes themselves are discernable by the morphology of the word (no contractions, etc.) do not require their own entry and have little reason to be given one; under these circumstances, it would be the same as adding a dedicated entry for every verb with ない or ぬ or any other helper attached to them. Would that do any harm? No, but it is fundamentally superfluous.

In any case, should this be accepted, I will be conducting identical changes to あらへん and others of the previously given list as they too are missing the kanji and cross-references.
