The correct term seems to be "dough scraper", and the more common Japanese words seem to be ドレッジ, スケッパー, スクレーパー, so this might be short for ドレッジカード. It's not clear to me that the item that this refers to is also called a 'spatula' in English though. |

| Comments: | I have a questions regarding markings in the kokugos. I couldn't really find a sound source for this when looking for it. How are ateji, gikun and jukujikun indicated in the headwords of the kokugo entries? Or at least in sankoku, smk and the likes. Because e.g. for 木阿弥 I see it with red brackets () in sankoku, I see those quite often. In smk it's like this 【木阿︿弥︽・〈杢阿〉弥︽】 (the arrows are above the kanji they come after). Could anybody be so kind and explain the symbols here to me, and maybe some standard ones (if there are any and it's not totally individual to each of the kokugos)? |

| Comments: | I agree in hindsight. They all seem to be rather rare/archaic, and I'll keep the note given on the [sk] tag in mind in the future. めのかみ is most likely archaic, only in koj and it probably went めのかみ > めんがみ > めがみ. Just out of curiosity, what different meaning does おんながみ have? Everywhere I see it the entry just points to めがみ. |
|
| 14. | A* 2024-12-09 03:19:31 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
| Comments: | > おんながみ has a different definition. Someone can create an entry for it if they think it's worth recording. I can only see it in Daijirin, where it simply points to 女神/めがみ. From the ヲンナ original reading I guess it's archaic. I doubt it should be added. |

| Comments: | Indeed. [sk] is for uncommon/irregular *orthographic* forms. These are distinct readings. I think いんしん, にょしん and めのかみ can be dropped. None of them appear in more than one major ref. おんながみ has a different definition. Someone can create an entry for it if they think it's worth recording. I think じょしん should be split out. |

Being pedantic here, but a pea pod/shell doesn't contain 1 pea, so that "shell of a pea" doesn't seem to work. "pod of peas" sounds like it includes the peas, which サヤ doesn't.
Just stumbled on this from the scabbard entry. |

| Comments: | I searched "past" in the "notes" field to find "after the plain past form of a verb". We aren't consistent on the wording, but this feels most accurate from what I saw. There's nothing special about する here, so the old hint was a bit misleading. Encountered at the *beginning* of a sentence as あげくに... "In the end", wrapping up a train of thought. Given the 250,000 examples in the ngrams, it would be nice to note that に is an option. I was not confident that this entry matched the Japanese source until I double-checked a professional translation. (I have this problem with short strings of unfamiliar hiragana) See, for example: https://jlptsensei.com/learn-japanese-grammar/あげく-ageku-meaning/ あげく(に) Example #7 弟は、勉強しないで遊んだあげくに、就職にも失敗してずっとバイト生活をしている。 |

| Comments: | Found it during a dialogue in FF14, ref. image above. Although I have some doubts about it... it's clearly using the ことに grammar point explained in "A Dictionary of Advanced Japanese Grammar" but I don't think that ことに is part of jmdict, instead jmdict has several expressions that use that grammar point such as "嬉しいことに", "残念なことに", "驚いたことに", "困ったことに", "幸いなことに", but other are missing such as "面白いことに", "悪いことに", "悔しいことに", "心配なことに", "腹の立つことに", the "厄介なことに" submitted here etc... So when it comes to this ことに pattern, to me is not clear what qualify as a worth addition and what doesn't. I'm making this submission entry more to have a discussion about this, really |

| Comments: | To keep the conversation history preserved, all comments at the original term 右に出る者はない, which now xrefs to here. (We should not xref back, as 者ない is less common and should probably not be encouraged). One note, I think 居 should appear in at least one visible kanji form to distinguish the entries. For it's part, "右に出る者は居ない" turns up a surprising number of book hits. |
