| Refs: | From my understanding they aren't quite the same, although they are very often used interchangibly in my mother tongue (german). I can't speak for english on that. I've always understood it as addiction being a symptom of, or something caused by, dependence, so being subordinate to it. And in turn the addiction keeps up the dependence. ICD-10: https://icd.who.int/browse10/2016/en#/F10-F19 "Dependence syndrome: A cluster of behavioural, cognitive, and physiological phenomena that develop after repeated substance use and that typically include a strong desire to take the drug, difficulties in controlling its use, persisting in its use despite harmful consequences, a higher priority given to drug use than to other activities and obligations, increased tolerance, and sometimes a physical withdrawal state. The dependence syndrome may be present for a specific psychoactive substance (e.g. tobacco, alcohol, or diazepam), for a class of substances (e.g. opioid drugs), or for a wider range of pharmacologically different psychoactive substances. Chronic alcoholism Dipsomania Drug addiction" 依存 is just "dependence" in the JEs. Something I noticed is that on the jisho entry for 依存症, it gives english wikipedia on "addiction". |
|
| Comments: | If included they'd need to be seperate glosses. I think it won't do harm to have it here but It'd probably need another opinion on this. |
