| Comments: | I agree in hindsight. They all seem to be rather rare/archaic, and I'll keep the note given on the [sk] tag in mind in the future. めのかみ is most likely archaic, only in koj and it probably went めのかみ > めんがみ > めがみ. Just out of curiosity, what different meaning does おんながみ have? Everywhere I see it the entry just points to めがみ. |
|
| 14. | A* 2024-12-09 03:19:31 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
| Comments: | > おんながみ has a different definition. Someone can create an entry for it if they think it's worth recording. I can only see it in Daijirin, where it simply points to 女神/めがみ. From the ヲンナ original reading I guess it's archaic. I doubt it should be added. |

| Comments: | Indeed. [sk] is for uncommon/irregular *orthographic* forms. These are distinct readings. I think いんしん, にょしん and めのかみ can be dropped. None of them appear in more than one major ref. おんながみ has a different definition. Someone can create an entry for it if they think it's worth recording. I think じょしん should be split out. |

| Comments: | those massif.la examples use sense 1, so only [adj-na] for sense 2 still seems appropriate iwakoku (which only has sense 1) and smk both have sense 1 as やや古風, sankoku only has sense 2 (with a =意外 note) my interpretation is that sense 1 is the original meaning but is now considered dated so in my head it made sense to move the non-dated sense up but it's true that they are the minority of refs and we'd generally need more evidence |

|
| Comments: | I think something was lost with daijs' two senses of てな in the previous edits. な in the second sense mentioned by daijs is the [adj-na] な、not the ”ね" な。 てなこと = と言うようなこと。So, probably what I've added as [2] here needs be a separate entry (but there was previous discussion on this daijs entry, so I'm starting here). The 〜ね readings obviously have nothing to do with [2]. Just encountered between an ellipsis and resumption of speech (though resume with てな). "you think/say he's too conspicuous [to be a spy]..."] ...てなことになりかねないってのに... (well, even if that sort of thing is likely) It seems to function as sankoku and daijs both suggest, a drop-in spoken replacement for "と言うような". The gloss here is far less important than expanding the abbreviation, which is important. Because てなことになりかねない is really hard to parse if you don't know what てな means. With our collection of と言う entries, it's a little surprising that we don't have a と言うよう(な) entry to reference. Though that does get into grammar. と言うよう 312348 |

|
| Comments: | Got here from 皮剥き器. 7% of forms display the 剥き kanji. I don't think it should be entirely suppressed. If you do an image search, you'll see the kanji used, if only occasionally. Pedagogically I think this kind of kanji should be visible unless extremely uncommon. Note the kanji is visible for the debarker (which probably not coincidentally uses 機). [sK] on one but not the other would seem odd. Amazon's category for food peelers is ピーラー・皮むき器 https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/bestsellers/kitchen/13945931/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_kitchen I know we sometimes shy away of just xrefing synonyms, but this particular kind of "almost interchangeable katakana vs. kanji" link seems quite useful to me. I'm also adjusting the xref. I thought maybe the brits call a potato peeler a barker, but no... if it's a tool for removing bark from a tree, this seems to be called a *debarker* in AmE. I found a Japanese industrial ref. I guess "barker" and "debarker" are synonyms here, but "debarker" is eminently more searchable. |

| Comments: | I have split off an entry for the 居ない form, as it seemed inevitable. Marcus's 2018 ngrams analysis seems to have encountered a case where the the ngram database just maxed out: 右に出る者はいない No matches (actually extremely common) 右に出る者がいない No matches (actually extremely common) Encountered as 右に出る者はいません。sanoku: 右に出る者がいない. Japanese is full of mysteries, the latest of which for me is "why should 者 pair with 無い for people?". In any case, modern refs (sankoku) give いない. mainichi shinbun usage is *almost* completely consistent with いない(refs). When ない is (rarely) used, the subject is inanimate (for example, a book; a doubly-metaphorical use of this term?). I searched for 右に出る者 when I encountered this. Anyone who searches a longer string than that is asking for a bit much, I think. If you stop there, は・が doesn't really matter. But we could [sK] a bunch of forms if we wanted now. Special recommendation to keep a 無い form on this entry, and 居ない form on the other, to make the 無い・居ない distinction abundantly clear. |

For right-handed golfers, a cross-handed grip would place the left hand below the right. Also known as the "left-hand low" grip, it has been known to help players combat the yips. https://www.baseball-almanac.com/dictionary-term.php?term=cross-handed cross-handed Said of an incorrect" grip or hold on the bat in which the batter's hands are crossed; e.g., left hand on top of the right hand for a right-handed batter or right hand on top of the left hand for a left-handed batter. |
|
| Comments: | This entry is being created specifically to work on the entry 逆手・さかて. [abbr] for クロスハンドグリップ if you want to add. The "left-hand low" gloss, besides being quite common in golf references, emphasizes that this is a relationship between dominant and non-dominant hands, which is also true for 逆手, in golf, baseball, tennis, etc. Contrasts in English with "conventional grip" (順手). |

|
| Comments: | This is not proposed for this term specifically, but for something lacking in the main 言外 entry. Encountered as 言外に...宣言した。(It seems any verb for transmitting information could be slotted in here. I've found 言う, 伝える, 示唆する, 主張する, 難詰される, in addition to the fixed collocation 言外に含まれる) The main entry for 言外 is [adj-no,n]. This doesn't usually suggest an adverbial に usage in jmdict (I expect [adj-na] for that, usually), but ngrams suggests 言外に〜 is a dominant usage. Might be simpler to offer an [exp] entry than try and fix the root entry. ほのめかす is not the *most* common collocation, but it's a simple gloss, and is contained in a number of JJ and J-E references as an example. (sankoku contains both ~にほのめかす and ~に拒否する. collins has a dedicated entry for this, eijiro lists it as well). |

(We should not xref back, as 者ない is less common and should probably not be encouraged). One note, I think 居 should appear in at least one visible kanji form to distinguish the entries. For it's part, "右に出る者は居ない" turns up a surprising number of book hits. |

In this video, we introduce "fukashi-imo" steamed in a huge pot and "yaki-imo" grilled slowly using rice husks as charcoal. https://www.timeout.com/tokyo/things-to-do/sweet-potato-festival This popular annual festival celebrates the life and work of Konyo Aoki, the famous agricultural scientist who furthered the cultivation of sweet potato in Japan. The temple area fills up with stalls selling sweet potato snacks like yaki-imo and fukashi-imo, and there'll also be lots of other related merchandise on offer. https://ask.metafilter.com/76331/Preggers-Nom-Nom-Nom Hope you're feeling well, gomichild! Do you have a microwave? Maybe you could wash and wrap a smallish sweet potato in plastic wrap and microwave it to make a quick fukashi-imo?
