  Comments:
Seconding Stephen's effort to remove "seedy" in 2022. Also removing from 貧相, which J-J dictionaries use this term to define. (貧相 is what I encountered in the wild)

As an AmE speaker, this word has only one English sense to me, and it always includes "potentially honest dishonest/illegal". As such, there is nothing for the other glosses to disambiguate. For American speakers "seedy" *is* unambiguous. As such, as long as "seedy" remains on this entry, for Americans it imputes a nuance to "見すぼらしい" that does not exist.

At the same time, any translator (including UK-based native-English-speaking translators who see no issue with "seedy") who uses this gloss will corrupt the translation if their audience includes Americans.

For these reasons, unless we're willing to mark it "seedy([British English])", which I know we do not do (but perhaps should), I think it needs to be dropped.

I have a growing little collection of "likely-to-be-misleading glosses" which I will someday address on github as a whole. Reminded by this entry, I actually spent several hours trying to draft that post yesterday, but it's just too much to address in a way that I think will be well-received right now. I'm going to use this edit as a datapoint, and save the big-picture post for another day. Any comments here will help streamline that github discussion if/when I manage to get there.

nikk 白人 素人 entry:
② (「白人(しろうと)」の音読み)
(イ) 物事に熟達していない人。また、それを職業・専門にしていない人。

nikk's 玄人 entry has a 1711 example where 素人 is spelled 白人

wiktionary has the kanji as "稀"

和漢雅俗いろは辭典 (1901) lists it

英会話形容詞の達人(2008) gives as "meager" along with 不十分.

Eijiro:
貧相な食事 a sorry excuse for a meal
貧相に見える cut [make] a poor [sorry] figure

貧相な身体 とはどういう意味ですか?
https://ja.hinative.com/questions/17423548
It means thin and scrawny body.

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/貧相
having a shabby, poor figure

sankoku:
[1]:貧乏そうな(人相・ようす)「〜な男」<->福相
[2]:(見た感じ・内容などが)貧弱なようす

daijs is similar:
1 いかにも貧乏そうな人相。⇔福相。
2 貧弱でみすぼらしく見えること。また、そのさま。「—な身なり」

Progressive?
https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/en/貧相な/

貧相	135581	98.7%
  Comments:
On removing "seedy", see comments at 見すぼらしい (which some J-J's use to help define this entry).

貧相 contrasted directly with デブ(fat), with images:
デブ見え?貧相?
https://classy-online.jp/fashion/106040/

Image search yields lot of body-type, fashion, and food-related images.

Daijs and sankoku give the same two sense. The first is "literally looks 貧乏", the second seems like the metaphorical use in [2] that is tossed around in fashion magazines. While I find little direct support online for "impoverished-looking", it matches daijs "いかにも貧乏そう", and disambiguates "poor-looking".

daijs and sankoku would both give 福相 as antonyms for my suggested [1]. Given the relative rarity of 福相, I'm not sure we should do that. The gloss on 福相 "happy-looking" could probably be improved.

While "shabby" appears in various refs, I am suspicious. It's used to describe clothing in English. "shabbily-dressed" could appear in [1], maybe, but in [2] it would be at odds with "scrawny". In all the fashion mags 貧相 indicates the body type, not the newness or quality of the clothing. 貧相 doesn't seem to be applicable to the clothing itself.

sankoku has 副 rather than トタル (whereas e.g. 遅々 has トタル)
probably not needed though - as mentioned other kokugos say トタル and it could be just some misparsing with the n-grams
given the と usage is much more common, shouldn't it lead?
[rK] on 渾々 still seems appropriate to me

I think Brian meant to write "glosses" there instead of "entries". But I otherwise agree with Jim's comment.
To clarify, I'm not arguing for the inclusion of "queer act". I'd have dropped the gloss myself. I was just a little confused by his initial comment. Thanks for elaborating.
9. A* 2024-11-29 11:10:37  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
> I think we're better off without dialect/region/generation-specific entries, even if some users may see them as acceptable.

The decision to include an entry is based on the *Japanese*; not on the variety of English in the gloss(es). We don't usually have any glosses using dialectal terms (Scots, Singlish, etc.). AmE and BrE are not dialects. We try to make sure glosses cover regional terminologies, e.g. our policy states: `where different forms of English use different terms, include all major variants (e.g. both "snow pea" and "mange tout" or "tap" and "faucet"'.

The point about terms such as "queer" in glosses is that it has a common meaning in 2024 that it didn't have in 1994. Nothing wrong with using it with its historic meaning but the meaning, in the context of other glosses, must be clear. I felt "queer act" had problems in that area.
8. A* 2024-11-29 07:17:04  Brian Krznarich <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Because I think it's a more broadly-important question, I'll re-open just to answer Robin's question (not trying to start a debate or anything)

1. I was at least a little open to entertaining "queer act" if it was idiomatic. I looked for it, I could find no evidence that this gloss had ever in history been used. Probably has been used somewhere, but I couldn't find it.
"dumbfounding performance" is idiomatic, and seems like an excellent gloss. In contrast, in modern AmE I'm at a loss for any circumstance where "queer act" would be an advisable translation today. It seems to me most likely to lead to embarrassment or misunderstanding if anyone were to try and use it. Perhaps I should have been more explicit on this point - I should not have presumed that other editors' intuitions would match my own.

2. As suggested, I do think that "queer" in this sense is [dated]. Especially for non-idiomatic use, I see no reason to offer a [dated] gloss on any entry today(so long as the Japanese term is not also [dated], at least). Since policy disallows marking English terms themselves as [dated], I really think "queer" should be stripped off of almost all of the terms where we currently still have it. But that is a separate issue.

To my eye, "queer act" in particular didn't look merely [dated] here, it looked absurd, and I suspect it would look absurd to a large audience of jmdictdb. In cases like these, with a universally understood, perfectly serviceable gloss already available, I think we're better off without dialect/region/generation-specific entries, even if some users may see them as acceptable. There's no way for each of use to know what another dialect will find objectionable/misleading/confusing, so I think we just have to point these things out as we encounter them and discuss.

I do get the sense that historic jmdictdb policy has leaned towards "so long as it's valid in some English dialect, it's ok as a gloss". I'm usually okay with this, but in cases of likely confusion/embarrassment (like this one), I think we should perhaps be a bit more selective.
7. A 2024-11-22 06:12:44  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Given its modern usage, it's probably best avoided.

Note copied exactly from 性懲り.

That said, I actually encountered as 性懲りもない. The current glosses would not have been useful.

As an [exp], this is also a standalone sentence. In that context, something like "you never learn" or "you never change" seems more applicable/useful. Would be nice if that could be added, though the xref at least adds a hint.

Note seems good.
I feel like if -がる verb entries should be handled like this in general (which I think they should), there's hardly any way around a note. Making the standard approach to adjust the glosses in a way they (somewhat) allude to the fact -がる can't be used on yourself is rather vague in my opinion. Adding a clear cut note seems to be comprehensible to everyone alike.

What other things? MK says …という気持ちや様子を外に見せる意を表す。

In GG5's example sentences it's obvious who is doing the 懐かしがる. So of course they don't include words like "seemed to" or "appeared to" in sentences like "My grandmother would often remember the village that was submerged when the dam was built and weep tears." But a non-native Japanese speaker using GG5 might, just like somebody using this entry, very well miss that you can't really use this to refer to yourself.

I think "to show nostalgia (for)" is a good starter but I think at the very least one more of the glosses should demonstrate clearly that this is not used for yourself.
11. A 2024-12-04 23:55:42  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>

The がる suffix can mean things other than appearing/seeming. I think in this case it's not conveying that nuance. The JE entries and examples are quite unequivocal.
