I don't see 足械 in any of my usual refs, but it does have some ngrams, and I see Japanese pages where it's clearly being used for this. Maybe [iK]?
Meanwhile, 足枷 may not be as common as 足かせ, but it's not [oK].

daij

あほ is def. more common than あほう in modern speech. 
Not listed as such in daij but today, I think it's fair 
to say this is mostly [ksb], even if あほう might have 
historically been used elsewhere (just guessing based on 
the daij entries).

Actually they did a pretty in-depth survey on the show 探
偵ナイトスクープ in I think the 90's to see where people 
stop saying あほ and begin to say ばか. あほ turned into 
たわけ somewhere in Gifu (they found the "exact" border 
between two houses somewhere in Sekigahara I think). It 
started as a segment on a single show but they went on 
to create a two-three hour TV-special and even produced 
a map/poster detailiing their finds:

claim that to Tokyoites, あほ is more hurtful than ばか, 
but it's the other way around in Osaka.
