| Comments: | >Would you not translate "座ってください" as "please sit down" rather than "please sit"? I think "please sit" sounds quite choppy. Given that its quite a polite sentence, I'd interpret it closer to "Please have a seat", which I was fine with keeping. "Please sit" sounds a bit more like a direct command. >While it does sound like a passive construction it's also frequently used to mean "please sit down" or "please take a seat", at least to my knowledge. And what it adds is precisely that possible meaning. I've never heard anyone say "Please be seated", "I'll be seated", maybe its a regional thing. Anyways, it's quite trivial and I'm honestly fine with the way the entry is right now. |
|
| 11. | A 2025-05-08 10:26:19 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
| Comments: | Thanks. > 正座 already has it's own entry, I don't think it belongs here. It never was here. It appears in GG5's gloss (〔腰かける〕 sit (down); 〔正座する〕 kneel on the floor; 〔座・地位を占める〕 be seated; take a seat) to indicate to Japanese users that 座る can have same English translational eqivalent as 正座する. |
|
| 10. | A* 2025-05-08 08:39:12 Sombrero1 | |
| Refs: | I think this very literally describes the "to kneel (on the floor)" sense: Sankoku: ①ひざを折り、足の上に腰(こし)をおろして席につく。 「たたみに━」 But I agree that having it last is probably better. The (on the floor) just indicates that it doesn't necessarily have to be "on the floor". |
|
| Comments: | >I typically prefer shorter, concise glosses I'd argue that these glosses are quite concise. I don't see how having one word less on these glosses provides an improvement in terms of understandability. Having these "gloss extensions" in brackets behind the "main gloss" is in my eyes an efficient way of providing more semantic coverage in less words. I.e. "to sit (down)" = "to sit" and/or "to sit down", both of which are intransitive. One of them is just a more specific phrasal verb. >In English, "to be seated" sounds like passive form. Might be confusing, and it doesn't really add anything imo. While it does sound like a passive construction it's also frequently used to mean "please sit down" or "please take a seat", at least to my knowledge. And what it adds is precisely that possible meaning. >正座 already has it's own entry, I don't think it belongs here. Two terms can have similar meaning. I don't know if a native would necessarily use them in similar situations, but I think it should be fine to have it as the last gloss >I also don't agree with "sit (down)". It puts more emphasis on the action of moving rather than the action of sitting. Would you not translate "座ってください" as "please sit down" rather than "please sit"? I think "please sit" sounds quite choppy. I think it's totally valid to have as a "gloss extension" as mentioned above. |
|
| 9. | A* 2025-05-08 07:52:15 Sean McBroom | |
| Comments: | I'm okay with that. I guess 正座 isn't really sitting in a western sense, so it's fine to add here. Maybe it could also be an xref. I still stand by what I said earlier, however, I understand it mostly comes down to preference. I typically prefer shorter, concise glosses. |

" "Preschools are often run by a voluntary committee. Normally they care for children from 3 years old, up until compulsory school age although some now care for children from 2 years old. " https://directories.merton.gov.uk/kb5/merton/directory/advice.page;jsessionid=693DA256A03E72D7586A764F23E04D56?id=Rl5dFEqueTw Day nurseries offer full-time or part-time childcare for children, often from 6 weeks old. Day nurseries are usually open from 8am to 6pm. Preschools offer childcare in sessions which range from 2 ½ to 4 hours, either mornings or afternoons, and cater for children from the age of 2. They are usually only open during school term time and not for the whole day. Preschools are sometimes called playgroups or kindergartens and also include Montessori schools. https://familyserviceshub.havering.gov.uk/kb5/havering/directory/advice.page?id=Ghwqqw8JUYI Up to 2 years old: If you need childcare before your child is 2 years then either a registered childminder or day nursery would suit your needs. ... 2 years old: When your child reaches 2 you may want to consider an early years childcare place available at preschools, Day Nurseries, Childminders and at some schools with nurseries. The Oxford Learner's dictionary is vague and unclear about this distinction, but it becomes very apparent when looking through the google results. Seems like kindergarten is not commonly used in the UK and while actual usage seems to align with how it's used in the US, the OEL suggests that in British use, it's a synonym to nursery school. Which it actually defines as "school for children between the ages of about two and five" which. again, doesn't mesh at all with what I'm actually seeing on site:gov.uk /site:uk sites. |
|
| Comments: | I think precisely because there is a lot of confusion and different terms in use in the Anglosphere (and beyond), we really ought to explain exactly what this refers to in Japanese. |

| Refs: | https://www.emmasdiary.co.uk/baby/childcare/preschool-guide There are a number of differences between pre-school and nursery, and it is down to personal preference as to where you choose to send your child. Your choice will depend on your child’s age, what you are looking for from a setting and how you child is developmentally. Difference include: Nurseries will take children from ages one – three where as pre-schools generally take children from three – five. Pre-schools have a formal curriculum and trained teachers. Conversely, nursery schools have a more relaxed environment and have a wider variety of programs. Nurseries tend to cost more than pre-schools do but this is not a hard and fast rule. Pre-schools emphasis preparing the children for future education, while nurseries give a lighter learning experience and act more like a childcare provider. https://www.daynurseries.co.uk/advice/what-is-a-pre-school Difference between nursery and pre-school |
|
| Comments: | Are you really sure about that, Robin? Because that's not at all what I'm seeing (at a glance). If we're going to throw in "nursery school" in here, which again, I really don't think we should, I think we do need to explain the difference between a 幼稚園 and 保育園, because there are several specific differences that are very relevant to foreigners with young kids in Japan. (I'm not being argumentative just for the sake of it) |
|
| 10. | A* 2024-11-03 03:44:37 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
| Comments: | Let's put "nursery school" back and leave it. The terminology varies a lot - what Americans call kindergarten we call "prep", etc., etc. In general "nursery school" seems to fit 保育園/保育所. After all, the 保育 indicates rather young kids. (My 5yo granddaughter is in prep, and my 3yo grandson is in kindergarten.) |

| Refs: | https://furigana.info/w/逆手 さかて 86.1% ぎゃくて 5.6% さかで 5.6% 1990 NHK study on pronunciation change, google translated for convenience: https://www.nhk.or.jp/bunken/summary/kotoba/gimon/103.html There are two ways to read "逆手": "gyakute" (the on-reading of "gyaku") and "sakate" (the kun-reading). When used in a figurative way, such as "take advantage of the opponent's moves," "gyakute" has traditionally been the common reading, and most dictionaries use the reading "gyakute." However, in a survey conducted by NHK in March 1990 targeting people aged 16 and over living in the Tokyo metropolitan area, over 70% of respondents said they read "take advantage of the opponent's moves" as "sakate," and subsequent surveys have also shown a trend toward more people reading it as "sakate." For this reason, the broadcast reads "gyakute" as follows: "Take advantage of your opponent's moves" ① Gyakute ② Sakate Other examples of "gyakute" are as follows: (1) "Take the reverse hand" in judo, etc. - Gyakute (2) "Hold or hold a short sword or sword in the reverse hand" - Sakate (3) "Reverse hand wheel" on the horizontal bar in gymnastics - Sakate ======== Golf tutorial, speaker explains "右手と左手を逆(ぎゃく)に持つ", then names the grip 逆手(さかて)グリップ https://youtu.be/ebUEtgq_GaU?t=80 https://zatugaku-gimonn.com/entry1683.html#a1 一般的には逆手は「さかて」と読むことがほとんどです。 Several comments say the same thing about the reading: https://ja.hinative.com/questions/21864634 基本的には『逆手(さかて)』と言うことが多いと思います。 単語として『逆手(ぎゃくて)』と言う場合は、「逆手に掴む」のように、物の掴み方などに用いることはあります。 Ex. 『鉄棒を逆手(ぎゃくて)に持つ』 In Japanese martial arts, is 逆手 a valid word to describe joint lock techniques as a general group? https://hinative.com/questions/16776481 I think 関節技 (kansetsu waza, joint locking technique) is a much more common expression. 逆手 sounds using/griping something such as a Japanese sword in an unusual manner, and does not make sense for most Japanese unless they are familiar with martial arts. https://budojapan.com/aiki-jujutsu/gyakute01/ Gyakute-do is an unique system specializing in Gyakute Waza, or wrist/arm joint lock techniques. Everyone who read this book will notice that most of the techniques are based on wrist/arm joint locks. Pauley's Guide: A Dictionary of Japanese Martial Arts and ... - Page 139 SAKATE holding a sword or knife with the point oriented downwards Sakate ( grip ) 和英英和語林集成 - Page 523 (hepburn, 1886) Grasping the handle of a sword or knife , so that the point is down- wards : The entry below is for [5] and is consistent with sankoku[3]: 卑怯な・いじの悪いやり方 https://ejje.weblio.jp/content/foul+trick JST科学技術用語 foul trick https://swordis.com/blog/reverse-sword-grip/ The term “reverse grip” in swordsmanship refers to holding the sword, knife, or any type of bladed-edged weapon, with its blade pointing downward, which is different from the traditional grip. |

| Comments: | Sorry for the length, a lot going on here. Encountered as さかて, "turning-tables" sense. Online refs suggest さかて dominates in modern Japanese. Conferred with young native speaker. 4th-year male college student was incredulous that this would *ever* be pronounced ぎゃくて. I asked "even in judo?"; he didn't think so, but he wasn't a judo student either. He conferred with another friend, they agreed that ぎゃくて sounded erroneous. This matches NHK's study from 1990, plus 35 years of change. I know we don't like stacks of glosses, but [1] and [2] are materially different, and [1] usually gets its own kokugo entry. Google "逆手 鉄棒" and you'll see gymnastics, pull-up bars, children's playground equipment, etc. Quite common for what it is. [2] exists, but not so common, and critically the xrefs are different. The sword-sense [3] has a particular affinity with さかて(daijs, sankoku, NHK) and must not be read ぎゃくて, so cannot be combined with the others. "Backhand grip" is ambiguous in tennis. I tried to find a definitive mapping for tennis, even watching youtube videos. Most common is a two-handed forehand, where 逆手 indicates the relative placement of the hands. In the video below, it's a two-handed forehand. Can you have a forehand with a backhand grip? 両手フォアの打ち方解説!両手フォア(逆手)のスピンのかけ方! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGh-d1ZF7wQ I found no support for [5] except that it's in the dictionary quite clearly. I removed "unexpected twist" from the figurative gloss. It seems misleading and very situationally dependent. Perhaps if you're the victim of having the tables turned on you? Doesn't seem supported by the kokugo definitions, or appear in any other refs. |

|
| Comments: | I pasted 100 yourei results into google translate in 50 came back with some variation of "use to one's advantage" or "take advantage", and they all looked quite apt. The situations were diverse, not merely reversing a deliberate assault. The 4th-year college student I asked about 逆手 confirmed that this does not necessarily have to be an attack from another party. Could be a general negative situation. When life throws you lemons... While the glosses I've added are quite similar, I think they're both useful. Not everyone can easily derive one structure from the other. |

| Comments: | i agree that the discussion isn't going anywhere so this is going to be my last comment >Conjecture. Also it's only jpwiki that thinks this is 2 senses. none of the kokugos tag it as vulgar or even colloquial, i wouldn't say it's a conjecture based on nothing many of them don't even have 色気 in the definitions could they be incomplete? absolutely, but until we have more authoritative sources i'd say it's more of a conjecture to say it's inherently vulgar >The thumbs might not be as explicit as the results for MILF, but click through and the pages themselves are largely R-rated. >熟女 is used in pornographic or r18 contexts more than half of the time within the first 40 results of "milf" i see 15 porn images - as in actual nudity i see zero porn images on 熟女 results in fact there are even a couple of blog posts/news articles and a youtube video even the suggestive results show way less skin than the non-porn "milf" results clicking through the websites the majority are definitely not pornographic or r18 "might not be as explicit" is an understatement |

| Comments: | "- 熟女 results are overwhelmingly non-porn" This just isn't true. The thumbs might not be as explicit as the results for MILF, but click through and the pages themselves are largely R-rated. Some of the AI generated slop is not R-rated or even suggestive, but still seems designed to titillate. ""they're both used in vulgar and non-vulgar settings" seems a bit disingenuous" It is absolutely not disingenuous. You brought up the google image results as a convincing metric for the words being different, but using that metric, 熟女 is used in pornographic or r18 contexts more than half of the time, and in all the top results. "熟女 was not even born as a vulgar term ... the porn usage was born later ..." Conjecture. Also it's only jpwiki that thinks this is 2 senses. Not even Wiktionary agrees. https://ja.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/熟女 The 2nd oldest real hit I get for 熟女と on NDL is in a collection of adult short stories from 1982. (there are even nude illustrations on this page) https://dl.ndl.go.jp/pid/1784824/1/6?keyword=熟女と I don't find this discussion productive. There are differences in nuance, I agree, but they're close enough that 熟女 is acceptable as the third gloss. It would have been a poor first one. |

The 11th result is the first non-porn/non-AI one: https://www.chunichi.co.jp/article/158694 I'm honestly seeing very similar results for both words. with a vpn set to japan and on a new incognito tab: - 熟女 results are overwhelmingly non-porn certainly they have a more suggestive character than e.g. 美人, but even scrolling a bit there's really not much porn - "milf" results are 70% porn and even the non-porn results are way more explicit than 熟女 >Both 熟女 and MILF are used in vulgar and non-vulgar contexts, MILF probably more frequently in vulgar contexts than 熟女 on a new incognito tab with vpn set to japan: the 2nd result i get searching "milf" is pornhub searching 熟女 and i can't see a porn website (or at least a well-known) in the first 5 pages "they're both used in vulgar and non-vulgar settings" seems a bit disingenuous, every word can technically be used in vulgar and non-vulgar settings the point is that "milf" is overwhelmingly used in porn settings and even when used colloquially it has much of the porn connotation 熟女 was not even born as a vulgar term (again, none of the kokugos tag it as such and gg5 translates it rather euphemistically) the porn usage was born later (as mentioned before, the japanese wikipedia also has 2 senses to illustrate this) |

For right-handed golfers, a cross-handed grip would place the left hand below the right. Also known as the "left-hand low" grip, it has been known to help players combat the yips. https://www.baseball-almanac.com/dictionary-term.php?term=cross-handed cross-handed Said of an incorrect" grip or hold on the bat in which the batter's hands are crossed; e.g., left hand on top of the right hand for a right-handed batter or right hand on top of the left hand for a left-handed batter. |
|
| Comments: | This entry is being created specifically to work on the entry 逆手・さかて. [abbr] for クロスハンドグリップ if you want to add. The "left-hand low" gloss, besides being quite common in golf references, emphasizes that this is a relationship between dominant and non-dominant hands, which is also true for 逆手, in golf, baseball, tennis, etc. Contrasts in English with "conventional grip" (順手). |
