サヤインゲン(英:Green bean)
  Comments:
Came here from some related サヤ entries ( サヤエンドウ...)I think 荒隠元 might have been a mistake somewhere, or some ancient term. Google turns up nothing obviously legitimate, a lot of jmdict derivatives. sankoku has 莢隠元.

I think "French beans" would be ambiguous to an American, as we have "French-cut string beans", which are pre-sliced lengthwise. Anyway...

The wikipedia article doesn't even have the full kanji form.

  Comments:
I read the previous comments. The first sense is apparently not [uk].

Encountered as subtitles, kanji with furigana. 鞘 is not joyo, but unsheathing swords is not the usual domain of newspapers either. The wikipedia page uses the kanji exclusively. A cursory search through wikipedia showed the kanji used most of the time in all sword contexts. That movie title choice in 2012 may have been a stylistic choice.

I've confirmed [3] is [uk] at the updated xref.

A lot of サヤ in the wild are pods for green beans and edamame. I think [2] is at least *relatively* uncommon, if not rare. It's not the cap to a bic pen.

This product is called 鉛筆サヤ. (Was not easy to find...)
https://store.shopping.yahoo.co.jp/kawauchi/2rmn71555.html

キャップ seems far more common here. [2] seems almost [rare] to me, but hard to say. [4] I have no idea.

"decoy" means "nonliving" in modern English by default:
https://huntwise.com/field-guide/hunting-tips/what-is-decoy-hunting
Hunting with decoys involves using lifelike models to attract animals into shooting range.

stool has only one meaning in webster

5: stool pigeon sense 1 (a person acting as a decoy or informer)

Chatgpt:

In traditional Japanese fishing, 囮 often refers to live bait, particularly in ayu fishing (鮎釣り, ayu-zuri), where a live ayu fish is used to attract others.
Unlike English, where "decoy" can include non-living objects (e.g., plastic duck decoys), 囮 is more commonly associated with living bait or an actual living lure in traditional contexts.

Dominated by "decoy" / "bait"
https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/おとり
  Comments:
"decoy (for hunting)", means "wooden duck" in modern English (i.e. デコイ in Japanese). Or at very least, modern decoys are assumed to be artificial. That's way off from the Japanese meaning, even if おとり might not be *strictly* 100% living.

Even the generally-modern sankoku is specific about raising a living animal for hunting: 誘い寄せるために飼っておく、同じ種類、鳥・けもの.

"stool" seems too obscure to be helpful.

For [2], reverso is dominated by "decoy" and "bait", which strike me as more useful when talking about human activities. "trap" is never used, and it strikes me as far more generic than needed here.

pod/shell, I guess both are used? I googled "edamame shell" and I guess that's a thing, but it seems odd to recommend "shell" over "pod" for this...("edamame pod" is also super common) If you want to switch that back, I'll just take it as regional preference.

Being pedantic here, but a pea pod/shell doesn't contain 1 pea, so that "shell of a pea" doesn't seem to work. "pod of peas" sounds like it includes the peas, which サヤ doesn't.

I usually prefer splitting over merging, but even sankoku has [2] for both readings. (かざあな・ふうけつ)

For the [sk] change, daijs doesn't have かぜあな, nor does sankoku. And neither does wikipedia. Wikipedia also supports [2] as belonging to both readings.

the sankoku entry for ふうけつ is just a ref to かざあな

It seems all cases can be summarized by the rule
"place [nokanji] readings at the end".
The editorial policy document could be be made a bit clearer;
it gives the impression that this only applies to names of biological species.

actual usage on twitter (first 20 I came across):
out of these, the only one where "rainy" doesn't really work is "雨降りに傘ささないひと", I think. Maybe "雨降りから始まる月曜日" as well.

i agree that the discussion isn't going anywhere so this is going to be my last comment

>Conjecture. Also it's only jpwiki that thinks this is 2 senses.

none of the kokugos tag it as vulgar or even colloquial, i wouldn't say it's a conjecture based on nothing
many of them don't even have 色気 in the definitions
could they be incomplete? absolutely, but until we have more authoritative sources i'd say it's more of a conjecture to say it's inherently vulgar

>The thumbs might not be as explicit as the results for MILF, but click through and the pages themselves are largely R-rated.
>熟女 is used in pornographic or r18 contexts more than half of the time

within the first 40 results of "milf" i see 15 porn images - as in actual nudity
i see zero porn images on 熟女 results
in fact there are even a couple of blog posts/news articles and a youtube video
even the suggestive results show way less skin than the non-porn "milf" results
clicking through the websites the majority are definitely not pornographic or r18
"might not be as explicit" is an understatement

21. A 2024-11-09 23:45:32  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>

"- 熟女 results are overwhelmingly non-porn"

This just isn't true. The thumbs might not be as explicit as the results for MILF, but click through and the pages themselves are largely R-rated. Some of the AI generated slop is not R-rated or even suggestive, but still seems designed to titillate.

""they're both used in vulgar and non-vulgar settings" seems a bit disingenuous"

It is absolutely not disingenuous. You brought up the google image results as a convincing metric for the words being different, but using that metric, 熟女 is used in pornographic or r18 contexts more than half of the time, and in all the top results.

"熟女 was not even born as a vulgar term ...
the porn usage was born later ..."
Conjecture. Also it's only jpwiki that thinks this is 2 senses. Not even Wiktionary agrees. https://ja.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/熟女
The 2nd oldest real hit I get for 熟女と on NDL is in a collection of adult short stories from 1982. (there are even nude illustrations on this page)
https://dl.ndl.go.jp/pid/1784824/1/6?keyword=熟女と

I don't find this discussion productive. There are differences in nuance, I agree, but they're close enough that 熟女 is acceptable as the third gloss. It would have been a poor first one.

>Are you perhaps outside of Japan? My search results show porn and AI-generated picture collections, most of them R18-tagged. The 11th result is the first non-porn/non-AI one: https://www.chunichi.co.jp/article/158694
I'm honestly seeing very similar results for both words.

with a vpn set to japan and on a new incognito tab:
- 熟女 results are overwhelmingly non-porn
certainly they have a more suggestive character than e.g. 美人, but even scrolling a bit there's really not much porn
- "milf" results are 70% porn and even the non-porn results are way more explicit than 熟女

>Both 熟女 and MILF are used in vulgar and non-vulgar contexts, MILF probably more frequently in vulgar contexts than 熟女

on a new incognito tab with vpn set to japan:
the 2nd result i get searching "milf" is pornhub
searching 熟女 and i can't see a porn website (or at least a well-known) in the first 5 pages
"they're both used in vulgar and non-vulgar settings" seems a bit disingenuous, every word can technically be used in vulgar and non-vulgar settings
the point is that "milf" is overwhelmingly used in porn settings and even when used colloquially it has much of the porn connotation
熟女 was not even born as a vulgar term (again, none of the kokugos tag it as such and gg5 translates it rather euphemistically)
the porn usage was born later (as mentioned before, the japanese wikipedia also has 2 senses to illustrate this)

https://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/question_detail/q10266689585
フランス語のウイ(oui)を重ねたのかも知れません。「はいはい」みたいな。

意味は英語のyes
から来ているのではないでしょうか。
  Comments:
A: 気をつけてね
B: ういうい

Encountered in an anime where there wasn't any reason to be drawing on French/European slang. Character is young/Japanese, and just being personable. Subtitled hiragana as ういうい. English translation was "sure sure".

Wasn't going to pitch this till I saw we had an entry for はいはい, from which I cribbed the glosses. A particular problem is that if you search for ういうい, you jump straight to the unrelated "ういういしい". You won't find the ウイ entry unless you already guessed the term is French.

Not sure about lsrc. The xref to ウイ somewhat covers it. I think the french "oui oui" is most commonly used emphatically, not as this "yeh yeh sure, got-it" sense. Since ウイ is already in Japanese as "yes" (it's in sankoku even), it seems more likely that ウイ followed the はい->はいはい pattern with an identical result.

Maybe a 3rd sense, [lsrc=fr:"oui oui"] = "yes of course" to cover the various French bistros that have taken the name ウイウイ?

Many dictionaries (meikyo, sankoku, JEs) have 爪の垢ほど, meaning "a trace," "a scrap," "a shred," etc.
I don't see "爪の先ほど" in my refs. My guess is that it's a nonstandard variant of the -垢- expression.

We don't use "former" in the names dictionary. Every person becomes a "former X" at some point.
I think "US president" is fine.

generally i find numbering (or the years served) very useful esp. to put their terms into context
but it's probably not needed for entries regarding american politicians
i still think it'd be best to have for japanese people and south korean people as 日韓 relations are often in the news

Our usual style is "former XXX". We don't have to follow Godzonian numbering.
I won't add "and future".
