| Refs: | Robin's proposal on github included archaic terms recorded in JEs and smaller kokugos. I think that's very reasonable. https://github.com/JMdictProject/JMdictIssues/issues/140#issuecomment-2362826820 This word is in shinmeikai and shinsen (Shogakukan's small kokugo), so I see that as a signal that this word is still relevant in modern Japanese. We usually don't add cross references from archaic senses to modern terms. Without more detailed references for the usages of this word, I don't think we need to copy all the senses from our 聞こえる entry. The kokugos just say "きこえるに同じ" for that sense. The note "as (お) + masu stem + きこゆ" on the final sense here is incorrect. Shinmeikai says it is "「動詞連用形+━」の形." Daijirin's example is "思ひ━・えむ." |

| Comments: | A: 気をつけてね B: ういうい Encountered in an anime where there wasn't any reason to be drawing on French/European slang. Character is young/Japanese, and just being personable. Subtitled hiragana as ういうい. English translation was "sure sure". Wasn't going to pitch this till I saw we had an entry for はいはい, from which I cribbed the glosses. A particular problem is that if you search for ういうい, you jump straight to the unrelated "ういういしい". You won't find the ウイ entry unless you already guessed the term is French. Not sure about lsrc. The xref to ウイ somewhat covers it. I think the french "oui oui" is most commonly used emphatically, not as this "yeh yeh sure, got-it" sense. Since ウイ is already in Japanese as "yes" (it's in sankoku even), it seems more likely that ウイ followed the はい->はいはい pattern with an identical result. Maybe a 3rd sense, [lsrc=fr:"oui oui"] = "yes of course" to cover the various French bistros that have taken the name ウイウイ? |
