GG5 and Chuujiten support the current first sense
Smk:
Daijs:
Nikkoku:
It seems there is a more abstract sense here in ほおが削げる
Prog:
彼女はほおがそげている (literally "flesh is scraped away from her cheeks")
She has sunken [hollow] cheeks.
(薄く削り取られる) be sliced off.
¶ほおの*削げた(⇒落ち込んだ)病人 a sick person with 「hollow [sunken] cheeks
Massif:
Twitter:
"膝上の内側がそげているように見え"
https://x.com/ohtani_mvp/status/1967973541300896148
"はやくもお顔がそげている"
https://x.com/tamakotamae/status/1098363804591677440
Based on that I believe it's helpful to have a second sense along those lines
I've also seen multiple examples along these lines:
"忙しくて気力がそげている[...]"
https://x.com/Nacht11149743/status/1270647947781304325
"完全にやる気がそげている。"
https://x.com/menoco/status/644110555901333504
"なおやる気は既にそげている模様"
https://x.com/gyuunikuwoaisu/status/598874026778341376
"やる気がだいぶそげている"
https://x.com/yukidokuro/status/602345103479349248
Plenty more on twitter and massif.
This aligns with the transitive そぐ having a "へらす" sense (shinsen, our current entry)
Adding third sense
Judging from the usage examples in daijs, daijr and nikkoku, the new sense four seems dated.
. |
|
| Comments: | It would be helpful if you at least provided the context in which the current glosses don't work. Because they aren't necessarily "wrong", maybe there are simply other senses that haven't yet been added. Plainly stating "this is wrong" is helping no one. |

| Comments: | I'm suggesting this correction because the current meaning can be misinterpreted as the cat starting off with two tails (as some sort of birth defect), which instead are a result of the transformation of an old cat into a Nekomata. When the cat transforms (because of old age), then the tail splits. Also the current meaning could be interpreted as the already Nekomata (because of the two tails mentioned before) being able to further transform itself into a terrifying creature, but I haven't found any reference for that in the japanese wikipedia page in the section about the "house cat Nekomata". All I've found is that it either deceives (老いたネコは『猫股』となって人を惑わす) or brings harm to humans (飼い猫も年を経ると化けて人を食ったりさらったりする). Some nekomata depictions in the ref. above. |

| Comments: | In both books (Ref. 2&3) the kanji for the weapon are transcribed as "Kyoketsu Shōge". Some consider this weapon a variation of the kusarigama, and therefore attribute it as a Chain weapon. Modern (!) replicas using a chain exist. However, traditionally the sickle and the ring were held together by a long rope (supposedly made from the hair of women or horse tails, as indicated by the character 毛) rather than a chain. This is clearly stated in both books (3 also has pics). |

| Refs: | https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/
|
| Comments: | I capitalised "Clione" because I assumed it did refer to the genus (in addition to the species Clione limacina). I realise now that can't be right (because there's no 属 after クリオネ). That being said, I'm still not sure what クリオネ actually refers to. The jwiki article suggests it's a common name for species of genus Clione, but according to daijr, it *only* refers to Clione limacina, in which case the gloss should be "common clione". Even if Wikipedia is correct, I'm not seeing any evidence that "Clione" refers to anything other than the genus. It appears to be always capitalised. |
|
| 3. | A 2018-09-23 18:18:12 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...> | |
| Comments: | if capitalized, it commits a category error. "Clione" refers to a genus (i.e., it's the proper name of a taxon; in Japanese, クリオネ属) not to individual organisms that belong to the genus. at best, they would be "cliones" (uncapitalized), assuming that this genus name is in fact used as the common name of the organisms. the original uncapitalized gloss was correct. also, the gloss should not say it refers to the genus, since the genus name in Japanese is クリオネ属. this is a member of the genus |
