Comments: | After sleeping on it and rereading the Meikyo entry, I think this can go ahead. I've discussed the issue in the past with Japanese people, and a common view is that "these days they are called あてじ", which is pretty much in line with that second sense. How to label thing in entries is another matter. I have trouble with the idea that 啄木鳥/けら can be called "ateji". |
|
3. | A* 2013-04-26 13:35:33 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | There are two issues: (a) the meaning of 当て字 [narrow vs. broad], and (b) the tagging of entries with ateji/gikun/etc. I'd like to have it discussed more widely, so I'll raise it on the mailing list. |

Comments: | It's actually "少雨の", etc. that has been translated as arid/semiarid. The EJs translate semiarid as 半乾燥, which we have already. I think this is best left alone. I'll leave it open for a bit in case of further discussion. |
|
2. | A* 2019-06-16 09:14:06 Nicolas Maia
Comments: | This might have an additional sense of arid or semiarid, as seen in a weblio example https://ejje.weblio.jp/sentence/content/少雨 and in how this compound is used for translating Koppen climate classification names. But the dicionaries I consulted don't seem to say so. Can someone confirm? |

Comments: | If there are no objections, I want to go through all these meaningless initialism entries and self-approve deletions of them. I will salvage the ones that are obvious worth having to me (like "VR") but throw out the rest. There will no doubt be some that are worth having among the ones I delete, but the effort involved in making them real, usable entries (which they definitely aren't in their current state) is pretty much the same as starting from scratch. I'm sure any motivated editor will go through my deletions and double-check them anyway. |

Comments: | Out of the 15 most common terms starting with もう無理, 10 include either the copula or an inflection of it (those with an *) and the remaining 5 are a result of copula omission. I do not see how adding the copula would be overly compositional, it is 1-2 added characters. Now, apologies for the lack of the percentage values, I do not know how to display them if there is a setting to do so, and was wary of calculating them manually as I do not know how the N-gram parses the results. For example: are もう無理's 237578 results not including substrings pulled from もう無理だ and the others? If so, should 237578 not be treated as 100% with the 71953 of もう無理だ and もう無理です accounting for ~30.3% of the total rather than ~23.2%? Whichever the case, N-gram count of もう無理 in a vacuum might not be the best compass, as I imagine it will draw a substantial number of results from phrases that are not the set expression from もう無理だ. |
