I think I prefer the single-sense approach of sankoku and smk. They give the literal "grasping" meaning only as an etymological note. It doesn't appear to be used with that meaning in practice. None of the refs have any "grasping with the hand" examples.

I'm not comfortable with it. I prefer the old way but with kana in the notes instead of romaji.

It would be a bold move. I'm not sure about putting solo kana in the "Kanji" purely on the grounds that their pronunciation is irregular.
Two other comments:
- if we take this path the entry needs to be split into 3 as it would be breaking the 2/3 rule;
