Comments: | see notes on フルタイム. There is inconsistent hyphenation of full-time and part-time across various entries. Not sure what's best, but they should probably match. Found this at the end, but I'll lead with it: https://mybestjob.jp/saiyo/parat-jittai-matome/ パートタイム労働者の7割が女性 70% women. I don't think this justifies the (esp. female) note. I could be off-base here, but it appears to me that the gloss note "female part time employees" is unnecessarily misleading. It gives me the impression that usage of this term carries a strong feminine connotation (well, stronger than it should). In English: stewardess (esp. female). <- this seems fine ("male stewardess...") flight attendant (esp. female) <- this is what I think I see on this entry Yes, men are more likely to do full-time work, women are more likely to do part-time work in Japanese society. But I don't think there's anything effeminate about a male discussing working a part-time job or being a part-time student (aside from the shame of not being a 社員, I guess). |

Comments: | Note: there are two Japanese senses in sankoku, #2 being along the lines of "operational 24x7". Note this term, for example: フルタイムマニュアルフォーカス (manual focus on a camera that is always available) Wondered about xref to パート or パートタイム. sankoku xrefs パートタイム. Definition of パート (for one sense) is a pointer to パートタイム (even though this is clearly less popular than パート, パート has a stronger noun sense, I think). Do we require a dot-delimited form to be visible? It seems like this has been adopted into Japanese as a single word. Waffled on an xref to 常勤. In any case, 常勤 uses a hyphen. In some tools (jisho...) if you search "full-time", this term does not currently appear(though 通勤 does). Seems like フルタイム and パート are antonyms, 常勤 and 非常勤 are antonyms. I guess in theory that the difference between 常勤 and フルタイム could be that the former implies a regular 9-5-ish schedule, while the latter implies "40 hours/week", or something to that effect... Not sure if this theoretical distinction is commonly recognized. |

Refs: | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affinity_(law) In law and in cultural anthropology, affinity is the kinship relationship created or that exists between two people as a result of someone's marriage. https://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=姻戚 in-law relative 姻戚関係 affinity(人類学の)〔血のつながりではなく婚姻によって作られる関係。◆【対】consanguinity〕 alc only attached "affinity" to the whole term "姻戚関係", though it also tags as 人類学. The note on "【対】consanguinity" is what motivated the [ant] relationship between 血族 and 姻族. |
|
Comments: | see comments on 姻族. Not sure to handle the field of "anthropology"), but "affinity" seems like a relatively technical term to me, which wikipedia notes as pertaining to anthropology and law, and alc notes as 人類学. I don't think this is the first time I've looked for an [anth]ropology tag. Based on reverso (which I grant is hardly definitive here), the "affinity" gloss would be better attached to 姻族 instead (or in addition). reverso gives "in-laws" and "relatives" for this term, similar ngrams. 姻族 17226 53.7% 姻戚 14842 46.3% At very least, a translator not fluent in English should be shied away from the "affinity" gloss if they don't know what they are doing. Comments: | The case for revisiting this one is not strong: - in usage 許す dominates - the JE dictionaries only have 許す for ゆるす. GG5 has it for all its 7 senses - the major kokugos combine all three kanji forms in single entries. Daijirin adds tags such as 《許・赦》 and 《許・聴》 to some of the senses but 許 is used for all senses. We could add notes such as "occ. 赦す" to some entries, but given the low level of usage of the other two forms, is it worth it? |

Comments: | Had a Japanese native correct an unrelated attempt at "pick up my dog" in an otherwise kanji-filled document. Used this orthography (拾いあげる). あげる often gets this treatment. I think this is straightforward [vt]. sankoku gives two distinct, plainly defined senses for what daijs crams into a single sense (corresponding to the split I've made here). (If interested, daijs has a completely separate 2nd sense which could be a 3rd sense here). This split into two senses essentially corresponds to senses [1] and [2] of 取り上げる. In fact, sankoku definition for [2] is: 特に選んで取り上げる (問題点をー) I'm not sure I've found the best (e.g.) for [2], but it doesn't seem to match all the English senses. I don't think you can go to the car dealership and 拾い上げる the car you like, for example. You are selecting something from a set of available information in order to further elaborate on it/deal with it/use it in some way(in order to 取り上げる[2] it) |

It's not unusual to have glosses with different connotations for the same sense. 影 is commonly used for senses 2-4 (but probably less so in edited prose). Comments: | WRT adding 影 as sK, I think that obscures the fact that the alignment with 陰 is really just sense 1. Maybe an xref to/from sense 1 of 1590145 would be better. For sense 3, I think the "behind someone's back" can stay. This dictionary is really for people coming *from* Japanese and the nuance should be clear. |

6. | A* 2023-05-07 17:16:28 Brian Krznarich <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | Just encountered the "behind the scenes"/"in the background" in 陰ながら応援, and most terms using this seem to carry a fairly positive nuance. Any chance of splitting out, and/or relocating "behind someone's back" from sense[3]? I understand that these are from one single sense in Japanese ("from a place not physically visible to the target"). But certainly in English these are different senses(behind someone's back being idiomatic with a harshly negative nuance). It feels very odd to see them side-by-side, and I suspect it would be misleading for a non-native-English user to see them this way. "behind someone's back" also suggest that the target is not aware of what is happening, but this isn't necessarily the case (and often isn't the case) with "background" or "behind the scenes" uses. Equal parts support and slander: 陰で悪口 2814 26.9% 影で悪口 2540 24.3% 陰で応援 2073 19.8% 影で応援 3021 28.9% I didn't make any actual changes myself, because it seems a fair number of sentences would have to be corrected to match up with such a change... I stuck 影 as [sK] here, as plenty of expressions using these senses will be written with this kanji, whatever is prescriptively correct. It's really quite a jumble. (I've seen Japanese articles saying "some people write with 影, but that's wrong, they should use 陰". This only appears, of course, because 影 is used all the time... see, for example: 陰ながら応援 98285 68.5% 影ながら応援 45211 31.5% <- that's a bit much to dismiss. Not sure what we should do about it, but it would be odd of use to not record such a prevalent usage. |
