Refs: | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affinity_(law) In law and in cultural anthropology, affinity is the kinship relationship created or that exists between two people as a result of someone's marriage. https://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=姻戚 in-law relative 姻戚関係 affinity(人類学の)〔血のつながりではなく婚姻によって作られる関係。◆【対】consanguinity〕 alc only attached "affinity" to the whole term "姻戚関係", though it also tags as 人類学. The note on "【対】consanguinity" is what motivated the [ant] relationship between 血族 and 姻族. |
|
Comments: | see comments on 姻族. Not sure to handle the field of "anthropology"), but "affinity" seems like a relatively technical term to me, which wikipedia notes as pertaining to anthropology and law, and alc notes as 人類学. I don't think this is the first time I've looked for an [anth]ropology tag. Based on reverso (which I grant is hardly definitive here), the "affinity" gloss would be better attached to 姻族 instead (or in addition). reverso gives "in-laws" and "relatives" for this term, similar ngrams. 姻族 17226 53.7% 姻戚 14842 46.3% At very least, a translator not fluent in English should be shied away from the "affinity" gloss if they don't know what they are doing. (I am learning so many new English words...) |

|
Comments: | Your wife is, I suppose, covered under "relative by marriage". According to the diagram in wikipedia, your spouse is indeed part of your 姻族, so this should be a proper antonym. We currently have the term "affinity" attached to 姻戚, but reverso never glosses it this way. However, nearly *all* of the reverso glosses treat this term as "affinity". sankoku defines 姻族 as : 姻戚. The definition of 姻戚 is followed by a ref to 姻族. Both are marked 文. |

Comments: | Note: this gloss is copied from the xref, with "esp. wooden" removed, since that seems not to apply here. Also, pluralized "warning", Pretty sure this is not a "bulletin board" (a permanent fixture to which recent bulletins are affixed as needed), and doesn't seem to be restricted to street corners either. "bulletin" without "board" might have been alright. (Note: I see there is an apparent consensus on a different meaning of "bulletin board" than I am accustomed to. I will make a different note at 立て札). Image search returns bulletins of the "paper/fabric notice hanging from bamboo pole" variety. Not evidently even "boards" to begin with. "roadside" is itself even arguably redundant. Where else is there to put a notice? (in spite of the preference for crossroads indicated by 十 in 辻 itself, it seems these can be set up anywhere. In modern times, 辻札 seems more to refer to the style/purpose of the sign than the particular placement). |

It was so high I considered pitching it as an entry, but in the E->J direction it is obvious from the parts(still might be a reasonable entry due to its prevalence and some noteworthy nuances. 陰ながら応援しています could be glossed in its entirety as "I'll be praying for you", for example. ). sankoku's definition is: 見えないところで、そっと。 I've suggested a reordering of Robin's 2019 glosses with some tweaks. Google "陰ながら" "behind" and you'll get plenty of "behind-the-scenes" support. 陰ながら応援する in particular is apparently recommended for *business* contexts(otherwise it may seem cold), and can be directed at superiors. Whole writeup on just that expression if interested; https://news.mynavi.jp/article/20220912-2392937/ I think it's not a secret to the person you are supporting(for 応援 anyway). More like you won't actually be taking any action that would make it evident to the people around you that you are providing this "support". All the strength of the English "I'll be praying for you/your success". (the article even provides this English "praying" equivalent). In addition to 応援, 祈り, 支える, 支援, and other similar terms are used. I imagine that most occurrences statistically will be of the "behind the scenes"/"from the sidelines" variety. "I'm with you in spirit, but that's all I can do because I'm not participating in your endeavor in a way that I can provide any practical assistance". A weblio resource actually pitches "in one's heart": https://ejje.weblio.jp/content/in+one's+heart 斎藤和英大辞典での「in one's heart」の意味 in one's heart 心中;内心;陰ながら;内々 "in my heart, I'll be supporting you/praying for you/....". Maybe not the best gloss for this term, but I think the sense is spot-on. Well, I would say that if this weren't apparently most-appropriate for business use ;) |
