「互いに別れ争う家は倒れ、分れ争う国は亡びる」(ルカ一一・一七)とは、聖書の不滅の言葉であり、歴史の証明する真理でです。

17 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall.

A random Japanese search of Luke 11:17
https://www.wordproject.org/bibles/jp/42/11.htm
しかしイエスは、彼らの思いを見抜いて言われた、「おおよそ国が内部で分裂すれば自滅してしまい、*****また家が分れ争えば倒れてしまう****。

book result:
『聖書』の Mark 3.25 And if a house be divided against itself , that house cannot stand . (また,もし家が内輪で別れ争うなら,その家は立ち行かないであろう)という一節がある.ここから, A house divided against itself cannot stand .

分かれ争う	146	63.5%
別れ争う	29	12.6%
分れ争う	55	23.9%
  Comments:
This isn't particularly common to begin with. To the extent that the gloss is "to separate", it would seem that "別れ" should lead as it does for every other われ・別れ・separate term. Instead, it seems like this structure is prevalent in various attempts at translating "a house/nation divided against itself shall not stand". "to be divided" is the motivation for 分, but both kanji appear anyway

There are a *lot* of these formulations. You just need to look for 分かれ争う to find them

To accomplish "itself", these phrases *usually* have some other bit:
お互いに, 内輪で(内わで)、自ら,

So "itself" doesn't really seem to be a part of the gloss(though sometimes no "itself" term is included).

Only got a piece of this from google books Cassell Dictionary of English Idioms
媚眼;秋波( Sharon is making sheep's eyes at Tom

Apparently this is a thing (but I definitely do not recommend this, but can't resist sharing either)
https://www.dictionary.com/browse/sheep-s-eyes
shy, amorous, lovesick glances (usually preceded by make or cast):
making sheep's eyes at the new girl in class.
  Comments:
Not in ngrams. This appears in a considerable number of Chinese books.

Appears in a handful of Japanese books, mostly kanji kentei test-prep. Cruel.

Miniscule twitter appearances (one or two doe-eyed photos).

The xrefs have gotten attention over the years, but this entry has stuck since 2006. "obsequious" in particular was dropped some time back.

This would seem to be a case of strengthening by duplication, so the glosses should pretty much be the same as both xrefs, "but stronger".
(like some of our previous "grieving" examples).

Simply displaying both xrefs should make this clear enough.

I noticed that the glosses for 媚びる[1] and 諂う are close-but-not-quite-the-same. Perhaps they should be aligned.

  Comments:
Perhaps not surprising given the derogatory nature, but the more colloquial:
"there is no cure for stupid" (*sometimes* ended with "people", but usually not)
is even more popular. Also high up: "there ain't no cure for stupid"

Not sure either of the old glosses are necessary. I knew this common English phrase of the top of my head and went looking to confirm it, only to find it's already a tatoeba sentence as well:

https://tatoeba.org/en/sentences/show/2495367

There's an xref pointing here that will also need to be updated when concluded.

Google results for "a born fool is never cured" are almost all dictionary references, or applications of this gloss to Japanese. Not a particularly common English expression it would seem. Can't see why it should be worth preserving in spite of its longevity in current references.

I guess a [lit] entry is fine, but seems redundant given how close this is to the incredibly-common English gloss. (If this were [id] and not [proverb] I'm pretty sure we wouldn't bother).

  Comments:
I'll use the xref stats here, since they are synonymous and easier to research. Updated glosses (if any) should apply to this and the xref.

The [note] is adapted from wiktionary. いつも同じことを言う人をあざけて言うことば。

Looking at this both literally and in use, I don't think this is a proverb in Japanese, though we've glossed it with a proverb. A more straightforward reading might be "a fool always flaunting their one bit of knowledge", or more precisely "the one bit of knowledge a fool won't stop repeating". Maybe an allusion to a character in a proverb, but not a proverb itself.

Note in the ngrams:
馬鹿の一つ覚え	25831
馬鹿の一つ覚えのように	4007 <-- pretty high % of usage: "like a..."
Example google books sentence in context: repeating "kawaii kawaii" over and over:
「俺はお前の面倒なところに普通に腹が立って文句を言いたくなるが、やつは可愛い可愛いと馬鹿の一つ覚えのように言う」

A good tweet:
https://twitter.com/FIFI_Egypt/status/1619981303176392705
馬鹿の一つ覚えのように“多様性”って言葉を使いたがるけど、その多様性の意味を履き違えたらダメですよ。
Trans mine: You can eagerly spout the word "diversity" like an idiot with only a single idea in their head, but if you don't understand what diversity means, it's pointless.

Here someone mocks yet-another-post on proper covid etiquette:
https://twitter.com/hoshi_kujira/status/1472161382565318656
いつまで馬鹿の一つ覚えやってるんだ?
Trans mine: How long will you keep repeating this worn-out tripe?

(I found at least a couple very-similar covid-related uses)

The phrase seems to simultaneously mock both the speaker and the message. If it were a good idea, repetition wouldn't be so bad I imagine. Two cases I've seen are \
1. repeating the same "worn out" idea over a span of time
2. repeating an extremely simple idea (可愛い、美味しい、面白い) with no further analysis to add in a short period of time (contributing to "simplistic" in my note).

===

I think if [sK] on this あほう forms, we can simplify the readings?

"阿保の一つ覚え" has no ngrams, but definitely comes up in searches and on twitter (a natural orthography for a native typist). The older kanji form 阿房の一つ覚え is basically absent.

No news, no twitter. Basically nonexistent. Exists only as an unpopular piece of reference-book trivia. 5 book results, all dictionaries, one of them daijs.

Since this won't get deleted, I've removed the [expl] gloss which doesn't entirely make sense as written(the whole entry here is a literal translation of a two-sentence daijs definition). There's nothing stupid about using people for small("trivial") things. It's about getting others to do trivial things you could easily handle yourself. But as this term is non-existent, and the first gloss is perfectly easy to understand, I think it's better to drop the secondary attempt at explanation than expand on it.

zero book results if you spell アホ. "アホの足下使い"
zero straight google results if you spell アホ normally. "アホの足下使い"

Even "足下使い" doesn't expand the search results.

[あほのはなしぐい, aho no hanashi-gui] an idiot will believe anything; an idiot will swallow anything.

Book result
Tigers, Devils, and Fools: A Guide to Japanese Proverbs: 2ndbooks.google.co.jp › books
Edward Trimnell · 2019

AHŌ NO HANASHI-GUI 阿呆の話食いあほうのはなしぐい“A fool believes everything.” AHŌ IS a pejorative word that means “idiot” in Japanese. The above proverb notes that fools are gullible, and will react predictably to whatever they hear.

This is the vibe I get (if this expression were actually used):
Social Media Influencers and Identity Formation
https://networkconference.netstudies.org/2021/2021/04/29/social-media-influencers-and-identity-formation/
Comment: "This is a huge concern with the youth who try and ape the influencers without thinking much about the repercussions associated."
  Comments:
Would happily delete. (Might be an invention of the daijs editors). Reason-for-delete follows editing remarks.

But first...

Old gloss leaves out the "hearing" part of the expression, which seems important. New gloss doesn't explicitly say "act", but I think this is implied. Anything trying to match daijs definition more literally will end up clunky, and I think this gets the point across. (And I don't know what the daijs defn. is based on anyway, since this term doesn't exist anywhere). Also, "act" isn't in the source either, could handle with [expl] or [note] if the nuance is critical.

No ngrams, tiny google hits.

There are literally 5 google book results. One is Edward Trimmnell's book in the refs. The others are two editions of daijs, and two kotowaza dictionaries. Probably all 5 are related(trimnell's English gloss sure looks like an elegant interpretation of the daijs defn.).

=======

Would consider deleting for lack of evidence beyond daijs. (Even the English ref seems to just mining random idioms from reference books)

ALL of 話食い ngrams:
話食い	66

And then we find that 話食い is someone who takes over conversations by interrupting and talking non-stop (a "conversation eater")
https://mainichi.jp/premier/business/articles/20170509/biz/00m/010/008000c

Another article on same introduces 話食い as Osaka-ben:
http://naruchan.cocolog-nifty.com/blog/2008/01/post_c8b6.html

So, 話食い has a completely separate, relatively pejorative meaning. Seems like it would be natural to combine with あほの, and there you go, あほの話ぐい. Nothing at all like the daijs definition. "An idiot who takes over every conversation". (I had initially assumed that this was an analogy to 痩せの大食い(thin person who eats a lot): "an idiot who has a lot to say", which is much closer to the Osaka-ben interpretation than what daijs has).

I was trying to find out what the "JK" was in the two referenced articles as I'd not run across it before. I finally had to do a Google search to find out what it meant. This would make it so people can find this entry. The full-size romaji JK doesn't map to JK (though you might be able to modify the database so all full size romaji mapped to half size), so I had to look elsewhere until I found out it meant 女子高生. I tried searching in English and in Japanese. Problem being that I'm not always using a system that has Japanese installed, so I can't always search using full size romaji. Also, even the Japanese don't always use the full size romaji, as shown in the example references.

I think we can stick with 女子高生 as the source.
WRT the romanization style, (a) we usually stick to modified Hepburn in entries, and (b) the kunrei and wapuro styles of romanization would result in J and K as well.

I think that a "flattering smile" in English more often means "the smile makes the person look attractive", or "the look pretty/handsome when they smile", less than the intent behind the smile. (though the other use does exist)

I wasn't sure how I would gloss it any better though, until I found that 媚笑 was in here.
