Comments: | I would be in favor of a split. It's a rather odd pairing today. 驕 is all about pride, and seems unrelated to [1] and [2]. I see your comment about koj, but sankoku splits in two. 奢る 驕る・傲る daijs makes the same split https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/驕る/ https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/奢る/ The senses given for 奢る by daijs do not cover sense [3]. Senses given for 驕る and 傲る do not contain [1,2]. There really seems to be no prescriptive overlap between these, just "spelling error" type overlap. It should be a clean split. We have two separate entries for 奢り and 驕り・傲り Since those entries are basically the noun form of this verb, it also appears odd for their meanings to be distinct, but the verb form not to be. |

Comments: | "goods" is fine. We rarely use "(s)" in glosses. Regarding Brian's suggestion to add "non-essential item", my impression is that 贅沢品 and "luxury item/goods" have the same nuance so I don't see the need for an additional gloss. |

Comments: | Very commonly glossed as "luxury goods". If you ask reverso for translations of "luxury goods", it's 50/50 this and 高級品。 To add to my comment on 奢侈品, it might actually be worth adding (back) "non-essential item" to both entries. 高級品 and 贅沢品 are both "luxury item" as in "expensive item". But 高級品 just means "expensive"(could be expensive vegetables, or an expensive toothbrush). Between these two, only this term has the sense of extravagant/unnecessary (judging only on the kanji, anyway, that would be my impression). ( 高級品 is also glossed as high-end, high-grade, etc.) On the other hand, what I think I really want is an expl or note of some kind. I still don't see 贅沢品 actually *glossed* as non-necessity in the real world. |

Comments: | sankoku lists 奢侈 as 文(couldn't say for 奢侈品 necessarily...), and it's statistically less common. Otherwise these appear essentially the same. Kanji is luxury+luxury+good, not unlike 贅沢品. No inherent objection to "non-necessity", but it seems like more of a defn./synonym than a gloss given the kanji, and wasn't on the xref. Seems like they should agree(maybe add non-necessity to the xref if that is preferrable). nikk says: 奢侈品: 生活必需品以外のぜいたく品。おごりの品。. <-- outside-of-things-needed-for-living 贅沢品 but nikk also says: ぜいたく品 。生活上直接必要でない高価な物品. <-- not needed for living high-priced goods So, seems like a bit of redundancy in its definition, and "non-necessity" is definitely contained in the English term "luxury good". |
