Comments: | Given that we have entries for 他に and 何か, I don't think there's much value in a 他に何か entry. The meaning is obvious and it's not usually a standalone expression. I think 他に何かある is too compositional. |

|
Comments: | A little late to the party, but I would have kept this too. Could have maybe made it: 他に何かある 7514 That's often the longer sentence. And the reader can conjugate (他に何かありますか、他に何かありませんか、etc.) I'm pretty sure in informal language 他に何か can stand alone in the same way. Comments: | I'm marking 咳く as [rare] and pointing it here for lack of anywhere else to point it. How to handle? JMDictdb has one verb form for "to cough" 咳く, and it is particularly rare. 咳 is not [vs], but it is をする, and just as often が出る (the form I learned in school). "to cough" seems like a pretty unfortunate omission. (コホンコホン would do in a pinch, if someone is studying their onomatopoeia). I'd probably create both 咳をする and 咳が出る as independent entries, but I'm too afraid they'd be immediately rejected. There is a "danger", if slippery-slopes are of concern, that there are other medical terms that work this way. I think 血が出る is "to bleed" (which is also missing), although 鼻血が出る (to have a nosebleed) is already here. I think "to cough" would be a worthy exception if this was considered exceptional. I also don't mind just handling as a note like I've done. (also, even as an exception). I checked on bleeding... 血が出る 49473 鼻血が出る 19806 出血する 48773 |

Comments: | "the attacking initiative", to me, means "taking the chance to strike first". To lose the initiative means to give your enemy a chance to prepare, or to allow them to strike first. Even with some of the other potential senses of "initiative", I don't think this was a clear gloss. I just dropped a placeholder gloss here, so as not to leave the old gloss. But, see comments on xref. These should probably be handled as synonyms. sankoku has no entry for the xref, but the xref is a far more common formulation. Definitely transitive, though an explicit object-of-attack is by no means required. (one of about 4 uses of this verb on wikipedia, comparatively rare there) https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/二俣城の戦い 武田軍は二俣城を攻めあぐんだ If in agreement, glosses should be aligned when something is decided on. |

Comments: | In case anyone actually wanted to use ゾロ目, this is how it works... See my treatise on ピンゾロ entry. The most common (and most readily comprehensible) way to say "a roll of two ones" in Japanese is not ピンゾロ, but 1のゾロ目. This is also the safest translation of "snake eyes" in most cases(if you want to translate "bad luck" you'll need to add something extra...). Also, it appears that this has a broader application than dice. In numerology, for example, 5のゾロ目 is any number consisting of only 5s (also called "Angel Numbers" apparently). 55 555 5555 etc. May also be used to talk about phone numbers with repeating digits in certain sections. I don't know anything about numerology, but if you google "5のゾロ目" you'll get quite a large number of results that go well beyond dice. Just throwing that out there. Not sure if it's worth a gloss: "a number consisting of a single repeating digit". (And maybe "Angel Number(numerology) if we're feeling adventurous, although apparently 56565656 is also an angel number if a sequence repeats, so maybe not). |

Comments: | I welcome other (more succinct) gloss attempts. The previous ones seem to have missed the part about "attacking", which seems pretty crucial. This is really 攻める + あぐねる, and 攻める is vt, so so is this. (examples in the wild are regularly を攻めあぐね...) Initially it was not this, but the gloss for 攻めあぐむ which caught my eye for its incongruity with this entry. Since あぐむ and あぐねる are basically synonymous, I wondered if there is actually a practical difference between 攻めあぐむ and 攻めあぐねる. (I am starting to think not). While 攻め倦ねる has an entry in sankoku, this entry is clearly more common (and far more heavily used in wikipedia). For 攻め倦む: https://ejje.weblio.jp/content/攻め倦む be at one's wits' end because of [be completely frustrated by] the impregnable defenses (of the enemy)、be at a loss how to renew one's attack. |

Comments: | Usage (among others): 妄想癖がある人 : a person with ~ Literally, "a tendency toward fantastical/made-up thinking." The *癖 entries are habits and tendencies, not people. This entry stood out. I discussed this with a Japanese woman, mid-20s, who said the term is super common. "delusion" would be far too strong. The term is used frequently to describe the personality traits of characters in anime/manga/etc. (I can see this on wikipedia listings for various manga that give character summaries). I can find no apparent translations of this term online. After a lot of work trying to match up Japanese wikipedia articles that had *anything* like the equivalent, and reading a bunch of parallel character descriptions without literal translations, I thought of "overactive imagination". My Japanese correspondent said: "過活動の想像…yes perfect one". I think the article [an] is needed for comprehensibility (usually as: a person with ~). I don't think this is especially [col], and I think it has ample descriptive use that it's not a sensitive term on its own. Obviously you can use it as an insult, but isn't anything like a slur in isolation. Japanese correspondent said she'd have no trouble using it to describe her self at times (not that this excludes it from being sensitive). |

As long as whatever they are is consistent across the 10 different alignment terms, it's fine by me... Comments: | I added *a* note because I've written so much text here that I think my comments will be overlooked if I don't. I'd really like you to give this a second thought, and maybe find a phrasing that suits everyone (my comments on the note are on the bottom). Japanese people don't know that Snake Eyes only applies for two dice. (Unless it's a many-eyed snake...), or that it is unlucky. I guess I wrote too much(and also not enough) for my point on 一揃[sK] to be transparent. I did not pick the wrong kanji for ngrams. ピンゾロ is a special case of 1のゾロ目, which is not in n-grams because it contains a numeral. By volume, 1のゾロ目 is far more common than ピンゾロ. [number]のゾロ目 (の揃目) means that all rolled dice have a value of [number]. 5のゾロ目 means double-fives in a two-dice game, and triple-fives in a three dice game (Five 5s in yahtzee). In posting n-grams for 一揃, you've done exactly what I was trying to warn against. "一揃" is not uncommon(with a different reading ひとそろい). 揃 is a counter for sets of dishes(and other sets of things). It is *not* common (basically, non-existent) for dice. This is difficult to prove from n-grams of 一揃, but easy to demonstrate using the common form of dice-counting ゾロ目: ぞろ目 71007 82.5% dice (and maybe other things) ゾロメ 9624 11.2% dice ... ぞろめ 5257 6.1% dice ... 揃目 184 0.2% dice ... This is well below the threshold for considering 揃目 a worthwhile kanji form of ぞろ目。Google "1の揃目" and see what you get. (Literally exactly *one* hit, one random guy's web page on a dice game). And as a super-colloquial form, ピンゾロ is going to use the kanji, by frequency, even *less* than ゾロ目. In other words, 一揃 is *not* a way to write ピンゾロ in Japanese (except as exceedingly obscure trivia). As I have said in other entries, I want to know the kanji form of everything if there is one. I would have been the first to mark this [rK] if it was real. No modern Japanese person would ever write ピンゾロ as 一揃, and most likely almost no one ever has (at least for dice). daijs seems like the odd-man-out listing the kanji, but it also says it applies to only to two dice, and also gives a completely separate sense on the same entry which maybe warrants kanji(about clothing). nikk, of all things, has an entry for ピンぞろ that does not include 一揃. ========= The xrefs were valuable for very traditional(for jmdictdb) reasons. ゾロ目・ゾロめ, as noted above, is the traditional way of expressing that all dice have the same value. The form 1のゾロ目 alone is *more* common than ピンゾロ, and 1のゾロ目 is a better translation for "snake eyes". Literally, just google exactly this: "1のゾロ目" "snake eyes" I have suggested a "note" on ゾロ目 that makes this more apparent. You kept the link to ピン, thank you. The dice game I xref'd is one of two common Japanese dice games where ピンゾロ is actually a facet of the game, and is the the game popularized in Anime of late. Maybe not needed, but quite possibly helpful to anyone who has a reason to look up ピンゾロ. Can leave it off, but I didn't think it did any harm on an entry about dice. === I moved the katakana form to the front because it is far more common (this got reversed again... I see it appears this way in daijs). ピン is from portuguese; yes ぞろ is from 揃, but that doesn't seem like a reason to front the uncommon form as having some claim to "tradition"(literally 20x less common). === I'm not surprised that the Corolla was dropped, but I still disagree. I know that the segregation of jmndict entries has been a considerable topic of conversation. jisho.org does not return results for names unless you specifically search for them (with the #names dropdown). I've also notices that jmndict contains zero entries marked as [sl] [col] [net-sl], etc, which ピンゾロ would seem to be. And worse, it appears that jisho.org ignores anything with the [product] tag. I searched for "toyota" in jmndict and got: ヴォクシー Voxy (Toyota van) ディスプレイオーディオ Display Audio (Toyota in-vehicle car audio system) プラッツ Platz (Toyota car model) /[2] Platz プリウス (Toyota) Prius ランクル Land Cruiser (abbr) (Toyota) /[2] Runkle Jisho.org, with a "#names" search, returns only "Runkle" and "Platz" (no Toyotas). This means that even if ピンゾロ were added, it would be undiscoverable. I was trawling twitter, saw ピンゾロ bandied about in the context of: "I saw a ピンゾロ" with a picture of a car, and I had no idea what a ピンゾロ was supposed to be or why. If I could have searched jisho.org and gotten "Corolla AE111, street racing" juxtaposed with "a dice roll of all ones", mystery solved. Since this is a kana-only entry, the only people who would encounter this are people search ピンゾロ explicitly. I think including the Corolla is both pretty harmless to those people(some of whom might actually be looking for the car), and kind of interesting. The association is not random. I don't expect to change anyone's mind on this, but that's my motivation. =============== On "luck". Even dictionary.goo.ne.jp knows that snake eyes is unlucky, and goes of its way to makes a note of it: https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/en/snake+eyes/ snake eyes ((略式))(さいころの)1のゾロ目,ピンゾロ;最悪の結果,不運 "The worst result, Unlucky". "snake eyes" is not merely two dice showing "1", it is an idiomatic expression of failure and bad luck. I know this, you know this, Japanese people do not know this. ピンゾロ appears to be generally carry the connotation of "good luck" (Something westerners are unaware of). Failing to note this leads to poor translations. While they are literally the same physical event, jmdict doesn't provide definitions, it provides glosses, and ピンゾロ should almost never be glossed as "snake eyes". (double-ones would be safer). One of the anime clips I shared has a fan-sub, where as the person repeatedly rolls 3 die, shouting ピンゾロ ピンゾロ ピンゾロ after each roll, with a huge expression of joy on his face, the subs reads "snake eyes, snake eyes, snake eyes". This is just a very poor choice (wrong number of die, wrong connotation). Also note the orthography on goo.ne.jp: ピンゾロ, not ピンぞろ, and that 1のゾロ目 precedes ピンゾロ . |

Refs: | Brian raised a topic on Github ([JMdictProject/JMdictIssues] Allowing inclusion of common road signage / placards as idiomatic (Issue #92)) arguing for including this as an entry. My issue with 熊没出注意 is that it is 1) not to my knowledge officially used on road signage but on trail heads and the like (though I don't live in bear country and could be misinformed), and 2) is one of several forms used, albeit the most common in the ngrams at a combined 58%, 3) very compositional where 熊 could be replaced by any other animal you might want to warn for. That said looking at the ngrams and google images it's at least 90x more common than 猿/サル出没注意 so this point might be moot. 熊注意 3182 13.6% 熊出没注意 11851 50.8% 熊に注意 3472 14.9% クマ注意 915 3.9% クマ出没注意 1670 7.2% クマに注意 2237 9.6% It is true that adding it to JMdict would mean it would likely pop up at the top for searches for 熊出没注意 英語, but Tatoeba sentences are also indexed by services like Weblio so adding it there instead of here, as I suggested when deleting this, should have much the same effect. |

Comments: | That's a shame, especially given the high n-gram count. I did make a point of specifically searching "beware of dog" to see if this kind of entry was accepted(idiomatic sign wording) before posting. But I understand that goals and policies have changed over time, so I understand. It also looked kind of sparse to begin with (I think I tried "slippery when wet" and found nothing, so I knew this wasn't routine either). === Apologies if I double-post this. I think I tried to submit a comment and forgot to click on the second page. |

(Very hard to know what is "correct" without a general population survey, I think, but some entries are at least missing). I don't personally feel the need for "centering" as a gloss, but it is the source of センタリング, and it's already on the xref, so I guess I will include it...
