Comments: | i don't know about the use of specialty tags to refer to widespread terms. i would not expect 'church' to show up with a 'christian' tag in an english dictionary, because it is in such common parlance. likewise, no japanese dictionary tags this as [仏]. it's not really "Buddhist terminology". |

Comments: | n-grams previously posted, ずら never appears. Do an advanced search for kanji-ends-面, reading-ends-ずら. This is the only result. Compared to 28 entries ending in づら. Maybe it's a spelling mistake, but it's a rare term to begin with, and I'm sure you could make an argument to add ずら to the other 27 面 entries, plus hundreds more if we went down that road. I don't know how ずら got in here initially, but it doesn't seem useful. (Was going to [sk], but don't see the point). The fact that "あばたずら" yields search results seems to be principally a side effect of being in this (and related) databases. |

10. | A 2023-04-24 12:08:10 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | OK. It's a fine point but I can see if we're treating it as a kango. The reading may have come from Sanscrit into Chinese, but it's one step removed from Japanese. I guess on those grounds quite a few of our entries that are tagged as "san:" should lose it. |
|
9. | A* 2023-04-24 10:29:45 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | No, it's about the ばか reading. See Rene's comment. The point is that there's a difference between words like カーマ〖梵 Kāma〗and 音写/音訳 words like 【僧伽】〔梵 saṃgha の音訳〕. According to Rene (and I agree), words belonging to the latter category should not have a Sanskrit lsrc. |
|
8. | A* 2023-04-23 23:50:08 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | We have 50+ entries like this with the "san:" tag, e.g. 旦那;檀那 [だんな] /(n) (1) master (of a house, shop, etc.) (san: dāna)/ 阿梨樹 [ありじゅ] /(n) (1) Thai basil (Ocimum basilicum) (san: arjaka)/ etc. I think the issue with the 馬鹿 entry was to do with the Sanscrit "moha" which is not really related to the ばか (ateji) reading. |
|
7. | A* 2023-04-23 14:20:07 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | We don't normally tag words like these as [san] though? See the old discussion on the 馬鹿 entry. |

Tokugawa Ieyasu moved it to its current site in 1598 as he began to build up the city of Edo. Zojo-ji became the patron temple of the Tokugawa and the final resting place for many of the shoguns—hence the temple and its gates are decorated with the hollyhock family crest of the Tokugawa clan. For posterity, someone who used the GG5 gloss: Tochigi Governor Fukuda of the launch of the Tokugawa design version of "Coca-Cola" Slim Bottle ...launched the Tokugawa design version of "Coca-Cola" Slim Bottle decorated with an iconic design of the wild ginger trefoil coat of arms of the Tokugawa clan. https://en.ccbji.co.jp/event/20181002/ |

Comments: | I was wondering if "Tokugawa family crest" might have been a simpler gloss, but I see it's a complicated issue. (and there are a number of 三つ葉葵). It does seem rare for anyone to try and gloss the crest title literally. Just going to add the ご surface form. Saw a couple of interesting datapoints that I'm noting in refs in case it ever comes up again, but otherwise I am not worried about it., |

Comments: | Vaccines are a winding road. Sneaky how 子 jumps in the middle of 雌牛. Not A+B because: 1. weird 子 placement 2. unguessable english gloss (unless you figure out to remove 子 to get to 雌牛 to get to "heifer") 雌子ウシ doesn't make it onto the ngram list but: 1. This is the form I encountered it 2. google returns results, mostly vaccine related (how I encountered it) 3. This form is included in one of the references above. including as [sK] so a person in a similar situation can locate this. |
