Refs: | https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/moon/third-quarter.html The Third Quarter Moon is a Half Moon By Anne Buckle and Vigdis Hocken The Third Quarter Moon is when the opposite half of the Moon is illuminated compared to the First Quarter. Which half you see lit up depends on where you are on Earth. https://starinastar.com/moon-phases-names-an-easy-way-to-remember/ Actually, I’d like to call the first quarter (waxing half moon) the “Earth’s tail moon” and the third quarter (waning half moon) the “Earth’s nose moon.” https://moon.nasa.gov/moon-in-motion/moon-phases A last quarter moon, also known as a third quarter moon, rises around midnight and sets around noon. Enormously common terms: 下弦 282732 30.8% 上弦 190064 20.7% 下弦の月 264063 28.7% 上弦の月 173615 18.9% 弦月 8330 0.9% |

Comments: | See many more comments/refs on 弦月, which may be updated after this. Changed (moon's) last quarter to "last quarter moon", as this is a technical term. It's not, generally, the whole "quarter" period of time. It is the period where 1/4 of the moon's surface is illuminated (1/2 of the surface visible from earth). "waning half" is not super-technical, actually, but it's common enough, and the cleanest way to make it clear that this is a "half moon", which is both important to the imagery (bow-shaped) and the meaning of related terms (弦月) daijs: https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/下弦/ 満月のあとの半月。 On top of the mountain of stuff I posted, here is a news video explaining how to differentiate 下弦 and 上弦, and they are exact-half moons(not periods of time between phases). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtwKuKlJkd0 |

|
Comments: | harmonize with 下弦. See comments on 下弦, and eventually on 弦月. This cannot be "waning moon". A waning moon is the entire period between the full moon and the next new moon. 下弦 is a half moon (and even in the best case, as a bow with a string that you could maybe imagine as being a less-than-half-moon, it couldn't possibly exceed 1/2). This is a very old "bad" gloss, and has been the source of a lot of (I would argue) bad example sentences in the wild. https://ejje.weblio.jp/content/waning+moon This seems closer to "waning moon" 欠けた月 Image search will give you results with all kinds of percentages of moon visible, the restriction being that it is getting darker. Search for 下弦の月 and you'll get half-moons. |

First cited in a Japanese text in 1698.[1] May have been in use prior to this, considering that partial synonyms 上弦 (jōgen) and 下弦 (kagen) are attested already in the late 800s.[2][3] 弦げん月げつ • (gengetsu) ←げんげつ (gengetu)? [from 1698] half-moon Synonym: 弓張り月 (yumiharizuki) |

Comments: | This is the first of many moon edits. Lots of apparent issues with half-moons and crescent-moons. (Note, this term on it's own is not super-common compared to 下弦 and 上弦)。 There are so many mismarked crescent-moons that I was starting to wonder if the Japanese thought 半月 included crescents... (I believe they do not) 弦月 is apparently tied up in a popular anime character which breaks the image search. try 上弦の月 and 下弦の月 instead. Here's another a site with diagrams specifically using various formulations of 弦月 https://tukihosi-tan.com/moon/2004/ https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/弦月 弦月(げんげつ)は、半月(はんげつ)の文学的な表現である Wikipedia xref for 弦月 is English "Half Moon". In moon phases: 新月(朔。0°=0) 上弦(90°=7) 満月(望。180°=14) 下弦(270°=21) 半月(弦。上弦と下弦の総称) (半月 is a generic name for the waxing and waning half-moons) nikk: either the waxing half-moon, the waning half-moon, or 弓張り月 (also a half-moon) げん‐げつ【弦月】 〘名〙 上弦または下弦の月。ゆみはりづき。彎月(わんげつ)。 Another ref, straight to 半月: https://kotobank.jp/word/弦月-491742 普及版 字通 「弦月」の読み・字形・画数・意味 【弦月】げんげつ 半月。 字通「弦」の項目を見る。 Since 半月 means 15 days/half-a-month, the ngrams crush this. But I get the impression that this term in particular is common when talking about lunar cycles specifically. (I am sure 半月 is readily comprehensible though, perhaps moreso). https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/弦月 英語でも、日本語での半月同様、一般的には half moon(または half-moon)というが、月相に基づく天文学用語としては quarter moon という。上弦の月は first quarter moon で、下弦の月は last quarter moon (または third quarter moon)である。 more notes on the xrefs. |

Comments: | sankoku also lists in the order 捕らわれる, 囚われる, as one entry (omitting the other two forms). But this seems to be contradicted by the numbers. Thought about [note="esp. 捕らわれる"] on [1], but not even sure of that. Maybe it would be appropriate. It ekes out a win for 敵 and 政府, but I can't find any other obvious victories. 囚 is clearly the dominant kanji form(no problem finding it in modern news articles either). My guess is that a very literal [1] has a small affinity for 捕 (which gets it listed first in the kokugos) while the metaphoric [2] strongly favors 囚 , which is far more productive (representing the lion's share of ngrams). Or, it may be that 捕 is common in related verbs (捕る), while this seems to be the *only* common verb form stemmed from 囚(and the dictionaries prefer 捕 for that reason). Small twitter sanity check, 年齢に囚われない 12 in april 年齢に捕らわれない 1 in 2023 so far 年齢に捉われない 4 in april 年齢にとらわれない 6 in april |

Comments: | You'll all be pretty annoyed if you decide this really is a "crescent moon". But I am reasonbly-ish confident. Not saying everyone completely understands the names of all of the phases of the moon, or that poor automated E->J translations haven't manufacture a small amount of "evidence" that this includes crescents, but a google image search is pretty overwhelmingly half-moons, and here's one more reference as a sanity check: https://groen.jp/columns-recipes/3387.html 上弦の月(アクティブの時期): 月が半月になる状態。 美しい姿を弓に張った弦になぞらえ、弦月(げんげつ)や弓張月(ゆみはりづき)と呼ばれます。 His picture is a slightly less "half" than I would like, but he seems to get the meaning. Is "月が半月" potentially slightly-less than 半月 in his mind... maybe. He also has a 下弦の月 photo, which I think slightly missed the mark in timing, but it's just a personal phot. "ちょうど半月になる状態" seems less ambiguous than above. 下弦の月(デトックスの時期): 新月へ向かい少しずつ細くなっていく途中、ちょうど半月になる状態。 真夜中に昇り昼ごろに沈むため、夜明け以降の青空に見えることがあります。 満月の時に蓄えたものを放出していく過程の時。 |

Comments: | I don't think "crescent moon" is right. I think one x-ref is sufficient. The kokugos don't mention 半月. Brian, in most x-refs, it's not necessary to include both the kanji and the reading. Never use the sequence number on its own when creating an x-ref (e.g. [see=1263090]). Stick to [see=弦月], [see=ありがとう], etc., only using the sequence number to disambiguate (e.g. [see=1255430・月], [see=1605370・やかん]). |

Comments: | See notes/refs on 下弦 下弦の月, 弦月(eventually). As with 下弦の月, this cannot be a waxing moon, because a waxing moon covers the whole period between the new moon (no moon) and full moon. This is specifically a reference to the 1st-quarter half-moon, and no matter how generously you interpret the bowstring meaning of 上弦 to maybe encompass a "smaller" moon (I don't think it is generally used this way), it couldn't possibly exceed 50%. Wouldn't be a bow anymore. |

Comments: | reopen. i still think the pronoun should be in a kana-only アイ entry. we generally don't give romaji headwords to entries unless they are abbreviations, etc. not full english words. by violating that here, i think we open a can of worms that would allow romaji headwords for all of the kana entries. perhaps that's what we want, but it's not currently what we have. so i think having the pronoun here is inconsistent. |

Comments: | 1. Should this be [net-sl] or [sl][fld=comp]? 2. Another meaning, related to I don't know how to gloss this in English. Can someone help? 3. Yet another meaning: http://zokugo-dict.com/20to/torabaru.htm トラバるとは俗語『とらばーゆする(トラバーユする)』を略したもので、女性が転職することを意味する。元のとらばーゆするはリクルート出版から出ている女性向け転職雑誌『とらばーゆ』に動詞化する接尾語の『する』をつけたものである。ちなみに『トラバーユ』とは仏語の"travail"で「仕事・労働」を意味するが、日本では雑誌名としての認知のほうが高いため「トラバる=女性の転職」という意味で定着している。 No WWW examples as far as I know. |
