Seems to functions like その場しのぎ, which is already [n,adj-n], defined as:
stopgap; makeshift; temporary measure

Looking into 付け焼き刃 and ran into this. A few reverso examples translate this particular term as "band-aid", as in "a band-aid approach". Seems like a nice gloss in some contexts. Found several references that chose to include band-aid as a gloss.

割栗石
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/割栗石
Google translate:Wariguri-ishi is a small block of stone made by splitting rocks, with a diameter of about 200 to 300 mm and a thickness of about 1/3 to 1/2 of the diameter. Crushed chestnut grounding refers to a process in which the crushed stone is cut into small pieces, and the top and bottom are laid alternately in a wedge shape, and then tamped down using cut gravel to close the eyes and level the top edge.
  Comments:

Note the daijs defn in particular. Identifies a crushed stone of a particular size for use as a building material. Nothing to do with rubble. The stones didn't break, they were crushed.

Google does give one article with pic, some traditional daimyo procession(with pic): 関金御幸行列
https://www.into-you.jp/places/4168/

yourei examples (quite a few), often reference daimyo, samurai, processions into castles, etc:
供揃い
https://yourei.jp/供揃い
供揃え
https://yourei.jp/供揃え

This appears to be quite a niche term.

ひな祭り
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/雛祭り
Dolls of heian period court ladies
三人官女以下の随臣、従者人形を「供揃い」という。現代日本では男雛を右(向かって左)に配置する家庭が多く[注 7][注 8]、結婚式の新郎新婦もそれに倣っているが、人形の配置の仕方は下記のとおり近代前後で変化があり、それが現在も地域差として残っている。

The title of "Le Bestiaire ou Cortège d'Orphée" by Guillaume Apollinaire
is translated with this term, and produces most of the image results (the cover of the text):
動物詩集 又はオルフェ様の供揃い ギョーム・アポリネール
  Comments:
供揃え has an identical meaning, and identical popularity in yourei texts if someone wants to add it.

Hard to prove a negative, but I'm going to go out on a limb and call this [hist] and not [rare] or [form]. There are weird cases of 供揃い/供揃え on twitter, but outside of actual historical references, they seem unrelated to this entry (they aren't retinues of people accompanying an important figure).

The term is used (in any spelling) on wikipedia 8 times, all are historical(plus the book of poetry by Appolinaire).

  Comments:
I'm sure the glosses will need more massaging.

I don't know a lot about swords, but I don't think that tempering makes them look any sharper... (so I looked into this)

daijs: 切れない刀にはがねの焼き刃をつけ足したもの

kokugos explain that a *separate* sharpened steel blade is attached to a dull and/or chipped sword as an emergency measure (and not, as I had surmised from the old gloss, as some sort of sneaky fraud). The 付け焼刃 is the accessory blade (はがねの焼け刃), not the sword at all. The cheap steel does not have the ruggedness of the original blade, and while it may work for a short bit in battle, it will dull and/or fail(peel off entirely) in short order.

Not so much that the stop-gap is completely ineffective, more-so that its limited effect is short-lived. See the very good imidas description, for example:
一時は切り抜けられるが、すぐにぼろを出すことをいう。

See these related kotowaza (might be worth adding the first one):
A tukeyakiba is easily pealed (off) (this expression confirms the kokukos that explain that an additional steel blade has been attached)
付け焼き刃は剥げやすい plenty on twitter (付け焼き刃は剥げ易い) (a few on twitter with 易い)
A tukeyakiba is easily dulled
付け焼き刃はなまり易い つけやきばはなまりやすい (on twitter, less common than the other expression)

Internet suggests some overlap between this term and 一夜漬け. (I would say that 付け焼刃 is the result of 一夜漬け )。In fact, check out this grouped gloss:

I think the proposed split was a three-way split:
黄葉 [こうよう] leaves turning yellow in the autumn; yellow leaves
紅葉 [こうよう] leaves turning red in the autumn; red leaves
紅葉;黄葉 [もみじ] [1] autumn colours [2] maple [3] layered garments [4] venison
it seems prudent to split out the two こうよう entries, not vice versa

  Comments:
"the attacking initiative", to me, means "taking the chance to strike first". To lose the initiative means to give your enemy a chance to prepare, or to allow them to strike first. Even with some of the other potential senses of "initiative", I don't think this was a clear gloss.

I just dropped a placeholder gloss here, so as not to leave the old gloss. But, see comments on xref. These should probably be handled as synonyms. sankoku has no entry for the xref, but the xref is a far more common formulation.

Definitely transitive, though an explicit object-of-attack is by no means required. (one of about 4 uses of this verb on wikipedia, comparatively rare there)

A different 胴切り story, which seems like it may be a precursor to the comical rakugo edition
https://lightinthecloudsblog.com/tag/hojo-tokimasa/
The last thief retreated to a room where wooded barrels used to store blessed rice wine are kept, and hid in an empty one hoping to escape later unseen. Ittōsai gave chase and... In one swift motion, he rushed at the barrel and cleaved through the barrel, which not only collapsed in two, the thief inside also fell along with it, severed from his torso down.
This remarkable feat of cleaving both the wine barrel and the thief would years later serve as a secret technique taught to his highest student, which would be called “dō-giri” (胴斬り)³.

c. Suihei giri (placid water cut). Placid water is flat; ergo, horizontal.
d. Dogiri (torso cut).

Here's an illustration of the rakugo character(note the wise mean whose torso is seated on a barrel, his lower body seated on the ground beside him):
https://note.com/kimi3528/n/n398f3370acd7

Here's a rakugo performance:
https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm7686612
  Comments:
The plant usage is *very* common(more common than the sword thing...), so I put it first. This honors the n-gram distribution as well.

I might not have ran into this if we had the "correct" kanji for 胴斬り. As a fairly general rule:
胴斬り = sword to the abdomen
胴切り = plant cutting (I've seen this commonly done with *string*, so even 'knife' is not implied here)

With 切り, google autocompletes 胴切り with サボテン (cactus)

Most commonly appears for propagating succulents (cacti, etc.), but I also saw it used for the care of rotting, traditional looking cacti, where the big leafy stem has to be cut down to reach a point with no rot.

In the rakugo story, the victim is cut cleanly in half, but that doesn't seem required.

I did a lot of search to see if there was some technical term for the sword swing. Suffice it to say, 胴斬り is *practiced" more than it's executed. So it is somewhat more accurately described as a sword swing (an actual torso is not required to say "胴斬り"). I was going to leave the gloss as is, but in the end I made some tiny changes that I think resolve this.

Here's a whole exercise workout focused on dougiri (no torsos harmed):

Let's do it every day to conquer yourself | Day12 | Dougiri with Sikodachi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRdljF3M_4o

One more thing... for the sword technique, ngrams don't show usage as a suru verb at all. I've given some yourei examples above. If you search 胴斬り with する, the sword results basically disappear in favor of cactuses(斬 is *also* used for cactuses/cacti). I don't think [2] is [vs].

For [vs,vt] of [1], succulents, you can search "株を胴切りして"

Looking at the yourei examples (which don't completely align with your average youtube video), it seems that 胴切り could also be considered "being cut by a sword across the torso". Doesn't seem worth the clutter.

金鋸	3350	25.7%
金ノコ	5900	45.3%
金のこぎり	175	1.3%
金ノコギリ	334	2.6%

The Japanese dictionaries give 金のこぎり as the reading for the kanji. I believe this is correct. In other words, 金鋸 should not be read 金ノコ. I think of this as more of a colloquial (if popular) abbreviation.

In that case, we should have a second entry with the 金ノコ reading, maybe as [abbr].

Or, we consider this to be just-another-reading of the same kanji(鋸 is read ノコ in for some saw types). My gut feeling is that two entries (and maybe an xref) is cleaner. But I honestly don't know.

  Comments:
I welcome other (more succinct) gloss attempts. The previous ones seem to have missed the part about "attacking", which seems pretty crucial.

This is really 攻める + あぐねる, and 攻める is vt, so so is this. (examples in the wild are regularly を攻めあぐね...)

Initially it was not this, but the gloss for 攻めあぐむ which caught my eye for its incongruity with this entry. Since あぐむ and あぐねる are basically synonymous, I wondered if there is actually a practical difference between 攻めあぐむ and 攻めあぐねる. (I am starting to think not). While 攻め倦ねる has an entry in sankoku, this entry is clearly more common (and far more heavily used in wikipedia).

This needs to be reconciled with the xref whenever it is resolved.

I had erroneously assumed it was a one-way xref, and was expecting to need at add an xref here immediately. I guess it was 2-way, because this has the particle を, while the other is about 5~10x more common.

I certainly don't object to a 2-way xref if we want to restore it on the other side. But this is the less common form (perhaps not surprising as it is colloquial/derogatory, so dropping を would seem natural).

The setup is that 2 females who fought for a country that was defeated are trying to join a new country. The king of the new country greets them with this. The king is supposed to be wacky and have an accent. The ガンクビ part is confusing me. I have a guess what it might be referring to but I don't want to get that wrong. :-[

んーーー? 負け犬どもがガンクビ揃えて何の用だぁ?

ANSWER:
ガンクビ is slang for penis shaft, but I don't think that's what it means here. 雁首揃えて means "in a line," and I think the king is saying, "Hmmm? What are YOU losers doing here (lined up in front of me)?" Hope that helps. :)

Started by reversing the xrefs.
Old gloss appears to be a fair ways off. I can sort of imagine how it might have been arrived at - maybe in the context of a large group of public officials who had gathered for a press conference, where one person spoke and the others sat by silently... But none of the terms "sit", "silent", or "meeting" (other than that some people have met) are part of the general implication of the expression. And it can't apply to one person, it applies to a whole group(*including* the speaker, in this press conference example). Suffice it to say, I do not think the old gloss should come back.

Pretty much all sources indicate that this is pejorative.

Not used in the news or in "proper" polite speech, for obvious reasons, which seems to limit parallel translation resources. I've found a few (refs). Here's a good example in the wild:
いじめられっ子体質のチー牛が雁首揃えて何やってんだか.

There's a song (which is where most google image hits come from) about a group of bullies.
雁首、揃えてご機嫌よう (Subtitled in English)【ガチャクラブ/Gachaclub】
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYix17mrTZc
Found an attempt at a title translation:
https://vocaloidlyrics.fandom.com/wiki/雁首、揃えてご機嫌よう_(Gankubi,_Soroete_Gokigen_you)
"雁首、揃えてご機嫌よう"
Romaji: Gankubi, Soroete Gokigen you
English: Line Up and Give Your Regards
(animated music video. addressed to a group of school bullies who have made the protagonist's life miserable)
https://genius.com/Genius-english-translations-ukaroku-gankubi-soroete-gokigen-you-ft-hatsune-miku-english-translation-lyrics
NOTE: The xref with 顔 is probably not strictly synonymous-but-non-derogatory, but the meanings seem obviously related. The xref is also missing nuance and needs some edits as well. (It's not "complete attendance", but "a complete assembly of all of the important/necessary people related to a task").

  Comments:
I haven't fixed the "readings" section. Might be simpler to make two entries and xref them (or just leave them as two independent entries).

Combining the のこ and のこぎり suffixes in one entry gets a little unwieldy. This seems to be the only "saw" entry that has attempted it.

I'm not sure we can claim that the kanji has one reading or the other. My intuition (from looking at hacksaws for a few hours) is that のこぎり would be the kanji reading, and ノコ would be an abbreviated, popular form. (hence the common representation in katakana). If のこ was *already* the kanji reading, I don't know why people would go out of their way to lengthen it.

Take for example daijs for metal/hacksaw:
https://kotobank.jp/word/金鋸-465416
かね‐のこぎり【金鋸】

But I can't imagine how you'd nail this down.

See Instead: 足並みが揃う 足並みを揃える

Started because I didn't think this gloss matched very well, then discovered that there was already a better entry in the affirmative.

Essentially, even if the negative might be a little more popular, it is still redundant.

This isn't "failing to reach an agreement". It's "failing to get on the same page", maybe "failing to see eye to eye", "failing to work in unison". If you like any of these, I think they should be added on the main entries 足並みが揃う and 足並みを揃える。

From the earlier reference: "lack of concerted action among the strikers", "concerted" was the key term. "to act in concert" . The strikers are failing to work as a cohesive group to attain their goals (they are disorganized, they don't agree on demands, etc...)

Because these are ordinary verb structures, the alternative is to add every negated variant of note:
足並みを揃えない	353	5.5%
足並みをそろえない	240	3.7%

足並みを揃えず	58	0.9%
足並みをそろえず	24	0.4%

足並みが揃わない	2278	35.4%

  Comments:
Clone of xref, + "to be on the same page".

I think these are roughly synonymous. Other form is more common.

Not clear to me yet if the difference between を and が implies different formulations:
"to be in step with" "to be keeping pace with" "to be moving in lockstep" "to be in alignment with" (and in the other direction, "to get on the same page")

I won't try to solve this one.

足並みが揃う has an entry has an entry in jmdict as negation(which is where I started), and which I am going to go vote to delete.

https://twitter.com/chekenappa/status/780309840916721664
(pronunciation is きしづり)

This ref didn't give "岸釣り" but it does say that "bank fishing" is "岸からの釣り" (いわゆるおかっぱり)
bank fishing
岸からの釣り、いわゆるおかっぱりの事をbank fishing と言います。岩場などから釣る時はrock fishingという時もあります。岸からの釣りを表す言い回しとしては、この他、fish from shore (shoreline)や砂浜から釣る場合surf fishingなどがあります。陸っぱりを適切な英語で言えるようになりましょう。

  Comments:
Very rarely spelled out phonetically, really had to dig. IME will complete either つ or づ, but looking around づ seems correct.
