Refs: | Image search. Wikipedia on 拳銃. Majority of wikipedia images are not revolvers. Great majority of google image hits are not revolvers. reverso for 拳銃: mostly "gun" and "handgun". Limited to "revolver matches", context is provided directly (回転式拳銃) or indirectly (historical identification of a specific manufacturer's weapon) https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/拳銃#revolver one "revolver" example: リボルバー拳銃 another: 回転式拳銃 3rd: 6連発拳銃 six-shot revolvers. 4th: リボルバー拳銃 5th: 4口径のベルギー製ブリティッシュ・ブルドッグは1881年7月2日のチャールズ・J・ギトーによるジェームズ・ガーフィールド米大統領暗殺に使用された拳銃としても知られる。 A. calibre Belgian-made British Bulldog revolver was used to assassinate US President James Garfield on 2 July 1881 by Charles Guiteau. And as with example 5, keep in mind that E->J translators are free to turn "revolver" into "handgun" if it suits them. |
|
Comments: | "Handgun" is a very broad category, and in modern times *most* 拳銃 are not revolvers. 拳銃 should not be turned into a "revolver" unless that is otherwise made explicit to the translator by context. (回転式拳銃, レボルバー, and some other more niche terms can be used if "revolver" is intended"). In the E->J direction, which is a secondary concern, translating "revolver" to 拳銃 just throws away information. There are very common equivalents available for "revolver". This is quite the translation from reverso: Mk VI Revolverを除き、拳銃は全般的に12m以上の距離での性能が増しています。 With the exception of the Mark VI Revolver, Pistols are now generally better options for distances beyond 12 m. 拳銃 = pistols 拳銃 is treated as a category the completely excludes revolvers. (one specific revolver being able to stand up to modern pistols) Not saying that's completely technically accurate, but it does emphasize that "revolver" is not a good gloss here. |

|
Comments: | Reason for news hits (crime) are obvious, but this is by far the least-common (by ngrams) "common" term I have ever seen. Katakana form is 15x more common than this. A 短銃 seems to be the subset of 拳銃 which have short barrels, which is basically the definition of pistol. (not sure why I am checking this point, "pistol" was already a gloss). I guess I'll remove "revolver". Some revolvers are 短銃, not all 短銃 are revolvers, all 短銃 can safely be called pistols, there numerous ways to say "revolver" in Japanese if that is what you mean to say (回転式拳銃、リボルバー top among them) Reverso gives "pistol" and "handgun". Wikipedia page for ピストル: lots of guns that aren't revolvers. Listed as another term for 拳銃 or ハンドガン in the 拳銃 article. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/ピストル English has "handgun", "revolver", and "pistol". Japanese has "拳銃" ”回転式拳銃" and "短銃". The rationale for choosing one over the other seems to overlap between languages. At the same time, it seems that the popular understanding doesn't disambiguate the categories terribly well (except that we know that a revolver specifically has a revolving chamber). ハンドガン, 拳銃, 短銃, ピストル might all be synonyms to a Japanese layman. pistol and handgun are basically synonymous to me. In other words, the only difference between 短銃 and 拳銃 is that 短銃 is "more pistol-ish". My compromise suggestion is to xref 拳銃, but not give "handgun" directly as a gloss. Surely the translator can do what they want with that... |

Comments: | Was going to [sK], but just removed entirely. Here if you want to restore it: 胴像[sK] If it were common at all, I might say it's worth making the typo searchable, but we can't catch every typo here, and 0.04% typo with a fairly low absolute frequency doesn't seem worth recording. It would be better, I think, if this term didn't show up for a kanji search of 胴, which is how I found it. Unlike some other [iK] entries bronze + statue = "bronze statue" seems kind of unambiguous. 胴像 just looks like an IME/typo, and that seems reflected in the ngrams. I read the comments on the old 胴 entry: This tatoeaba sentence seems like a likely typo as well: 胴像は頭を持っていない。 例文 The statue has no head. I've left a note to this effect on tatoeba. One of the 2011 references is this: http://blog.webtravel.jp/partner44/index.php?itemid=3002 It spells 胴像 but mentions a specific statue "ジェルジンスキー像", which you can google, and is a quite-ordinary-looking bronze. Another ref, an archive.org link now: https://web.archive.org/web/20040508163939/http://www9.plala.or.jp/takedagun/siseki/Niigata/Joetu/K-maturi/K-maturi3.htm Has a pic of an ordinary bronze statue, writes "謙信公胴像の下に続々と" Google confirms this is a mistyping of 謙信公銅像. The other entries no longer exist, didn't bother to search on archive.org. |

In that case, we should have a second entry with the 金ノコ reading, maybe as [abbr]. Or, we consider this to be just-another-reading of the same kanji(鋸 is read ノコ in for some saw types). My gut feeling is that two entries (and maybe an xref) is cleaner. But I honestly don't know. |

We don't have an entry for 回転式, but this is not the common way to identify the mechanism used in a revolver, so I am just going to point at the 回転式拳銃 entry because that is what is available. Interesting comments on the old forked entry about being told explicitly to use this form, I wonder what the specific rationale ended up being in that case. 3 hits on all of wikipedia. My guess is historic legal/technical phrasing. One of the three wikipedia references was to "Kyoto and Osaka serial robbery-murder case" using the murder weapon: ステンレス製包丁(刃体の長さ約16.9 cm)[注 2]、警察用ニューナンブ回転弾倉式拳銃[1](38口径)[2] the weapon itself has a wikipedia page: ニューナンブM60 https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/ニューナンブM60 On its own page, it is simply called a 回転式拳銃. 回転弾倉式拳銃 does not appear. Maybe 回転弾倉式拳銃 carries some news-reportery "gravitas" along with it... |

Comments: | I haven't fixed the "readings" section. Might be simpler to make two entries and xref them (or just leave them as two independent entries). Combining the のこ and のこぎり suffixes in one entry gets a little unwieldy. This seems to be the only "saw" entry that has attempted it. I'm not sure we can claim that the kanji has one reading or the other. My intuition (from looking at hacksaws for a few hours) is that のこぎり would be the kanji reading, and ノコ would be an abbreviated, popular form. (hence the common representation in katakana). If のこ was *already* the kanji reading, I don't know why people would go out of their way to lengthen it. Take for example daijs for metal/hacksaw: https://kotobank.jp/word/金鋸-465416 かね‐のこぎり【金鋸】 But I can't imagine how you'd nail this down. |

|
Comments: | I was initially just coming to add some more kanji... these rabbit holes... After too much research, it appears that a 船だまり is a 泊地 for small boats (sankoku specifically calls out fishing boats, but anyway...) Aligning with 泊地. (In particular, dropping the somewhat misleading gloss of "harbor"). Key point is under the wikipedia entry for the more-generic term 泊地(はくち、英語: harbor / anchorage): 日本語では港湾において船舶を停泊させる水域とされるが、英語では特定のエリアではなく港湾全体を指す場合もある。 In Japanese, this term refers to where the boats are kept, in English it usually encompasses the entire surrounding body of water. This is no doubt why the suggested xref does *not* currently include "harbor" as a gloss. daijs give a super-generic definition that could mean "harbor", or anywhere a boat stops to take sanctuary from a storm. sankoku says "fishing boats", wikipedia page on "泊地" says "in the case of small boats, also called 船だまり", wikipedia page on 船だまり specifically gives an odd English gloss of "basins for small craft" and specifically mentions facilities( 港湾施設) Image search seems to reliably return ships moored to *something*. Which is to say, this probably isn't just a "body of water protected from the ocean", but an area of a harbor(or even a place on a river or canal) with facilities for mooring boats. Evidently a lot of boats in the same place, hence 溜まり。 I started on this entry because android IME offered the alt. kanji 舟溜まり (MacOS does not). Given that the target is "small boats", it is perhaps not surprising that this kanji form is common. Went to twitter and did an image search for the various terms. 舟溜まり and 舟だまり produce facilities to moor small boats. 舟溜り and 舟溜 seem to appear more often as suffixes on place names related to keeping boats( ex. 南禅寺舟溜り). 船溜 with no furigana appears in nikk. I just added these all as [sK] forms. I don't think they should be learned, but someone might need to find them. I think small boats are more likely to moor (be tied to the shore) than drop anchor, so I've pushed the moorage gloss to the top. Image search is definitely boats tied up to docking facilities. https://ocdi.or.jp/tec_terms/terms_pdf/pdf_dw/terms.pdf small craft basin 船だまり: a water area and facilities to moor such small working crafts in a port such as tug boats, pilot boats, patrol boats, and quarantine and custom boats. Thought about adding "mooring basin" as a gloss, but "moorage" produces much better image results, and covers the generic use of the term (canal-side moorage can be 船だまり, I think, but it's not a basin...). |

Comments: | To start off with, here's a fixed, common, polite expression(I can surmise the meaning, but I have not found a full English translation for this common expression): 体調を崩されませんようご自愛ください Can you say in English "try not to become indisposed?" Anyway, this is a surprisingly common term(worth refining, I think), apparently used as a negated command "don't get sick, don't overwork yourself, don't overdo it, etc.". 体調を崩し 504144 体調を崩さ 124351 (beginning of expressions like 体調を崩されないよう 体調を崩さない...) 体調を崩す 88486 体調を崩しやすい 38826 ("I get sick easily", I imagine) I'm volunteering my ignorance here. I was completely unaware that "indisposed" carried the meaning of "slightly unwell". Growing up with phrases like "I'm a bit indisposed at the moment", I've come to believe this is a synonym for "temporarily unavailable due to being occupied with some other matter, call again later". The collins note above "or for a reason that you do not want to reveal" euphemistic usage of the term has surely contributed to this transformation. The usual reverso translation of "indisposed" is 具合が悪い, which seems like the right tone for general excuse-making. Might be a better fit as the last entry there, rather than here. Because "indisposed" was confusing for me, I'm going to make a second argument to drop it. Everything I've read suggests that "indisposed" is supposed to reflect "mild illness". It also seems to reflect something passive that "just happens", where as 体調を崩す seems quite a bit more severe(image results), and the verbiage seems to suggest that one has brought this on themselves in some way (through overwork, eating something undercooked, etc.). Moving on to my edits of the other glosses... This looks like "a thing that happens". "I/he got sick": 体調を崩してしまった 体調を崩した 65976 体調を崩してしまった 14563 体調を崩しちゃった 1058 Likewise the negated forms 体調を崩さないように "try to not get sick. look after your health, etc.". Seems like there is some overlap... 具合が悪い I am sick(or 体調を崩している 22523), 体調を崩した I got sick (具合が悪くなった?) |

My inclination, for the record, is to created 金切ノコ・金切りノコ as a standalone entry, with no 鋸 kanji included, and an xref back here. Image search returns hacksaws. In spite of literally meaning "metal cutting saw", these saws tend to be principally hacksaws. We already have an entry for 金鋸 which has only one gloss: hacksaw Another reliable term for hacksaw is 弓のこ (which we also have). Popularity is about even though. This term, in spite of the not-so-high n-grams, seems to be a very reliable search for shopping/twitter for hacksaws. Comments: | Guess I'll round-out the hacksaw collection. Doesn't seem super-common in everyday use, but often appears in product listings for hacksaws along-side other more-Japanese terms 金切りのこ(ぎり) actually seems like the the more every-day equivalent after a day of browsing. But maybe 弓のこ, (or maybe both?). |

Comments: | This has fewer ngrams, but appears to be the more-common standalone term for a "revolver cylinder". The higher ngrams for 回転弾倉 come from appending 式, and then a gun (回転弾倉式拳銃). But if you're just talking about the cylinder itself, 回転式弾倉 seems to win. (but maybe this is pedantic, they both appear as standalone nouns on wikipedia). |

Comments: | Koj has しいし【籡】pointing to しんし【籡・伸子】. Shinmeikai has "「簇・籡」とも書く" on its 伸子/しんし entry. Daijr/s and meikyo have neither the reading nor the kanji. We could add 簇 as an rK form to 伸子/しんし but our only source (at least in the major refs) is shinmeikai. I don't think it's needed. |
