Comments: | Several years ago we dropped the 行ける form from the いける entry (only GG5 had it). It's been pointed out to me that none of the JEs or kokugos has 行けない in their いけない entries. Should we drop it from here (and also from 行けません)? An issue would be the reindexing of the ~600 sentences. |

Comments: | GG5 has the senses of this entry following "to be able to go", etc. I think it's important that users, particularly beginners, don't get confused. I think the best approach is to drop 行ける as a headword, and add "from 行ける" as a note. The vast majority of uses of 行ける will be from 行く, and not this entry. I'll approve this approach, since Robin has suggested it, and reopen if anyone wants to continue the dialogue. |

Comments: | Changing to "homicide" to align with related entries and Japanese government verbiage(see 同意殺人 refs). With regard to the unusual 3-way total xref, I really think these are explanatory in all directions. They are all prefixed differently, so you probably won't see them in any single dictionary search, and each elucidates the nuances with the other (I think). |

Comments: | Really helps with the nuance of 嘱託 (internal business). This is when you pay someone to kill *yourself*. After much reading, I stumbled on the new gloss in the middle of weblio. I can't "unsee" it now, or think of any alternative that isn't objectively worse. There is a lot of misunderstanding floating around the internet right now, with English news sources thinking that "self-requested murder" is a "special case" of 嘱託殺人 due to the "contract murder" gloss (here and elsewhere). 承諾殺人 Someone offers to murder you and you accept 嘱託殺人 You seek out someone of your own volition to murder you These two are grouped under 同意殺人罪, consensual murder. Distinguished from assisted suicide. 自殺幇助. (all illegal in Japan) Quite a taxonomy. |

Comments: | The xref is quite uncommon, and probably unhelpful to point at without significant nuance explanation. (comments at the xref, also edited) I feel like pushback will come on removing "lean figure". My argument is that "slim" is almost always the right J-E gloss. (or "weight loss" if the text is more elaborately massaged). Sure, you won't get this entry if you search "lean", but you won't get it if you search "thin" either. The sankoku definition are: 1. やせたからだ 2. 「ふとったからだを」やせたからだにすること Either way, you have to have weight and then lose it. For "lean" a person can always be lean. For "slim" I grant that it's ambiguous, (I think someone can always be slim if they've been healthy all their lives), but there is a strong exercise/weight loss/health connotation to "slim" which seems to match this term. Having "lean" on a gloss here, to me, makes it appear less-specific than it actually is. Google image search for "痩身" kind of says everything, I think. |

Comments: | Disconnecting the sense of this term from the xref. "slim" has a strong "healthy" connotation, which this term seems to lack, and "slim" is also by far the most common gloss for the xref. We could put 100 synonyms for "thin" on this gloss, but it doesn't seem like "slim" has any special association with this term. This isn't quite [rare], perhaps, but it is quite uncommon. It is not in sankoku. More than half of its uses are in the 4-character compound 長身痩躯 (a reference explicitly pointed this out, saying it's almost exclusively used in the 4-character-compound, but this seems like a little bit of an overstatement). 「痩躯」は単独で用いることは少なく「長身痩躯」と四字熟語に変えて使用していきます。 jmdict doesn't usually link 4-character-compound components back to the compound (燕雀 and 鴻鵠 do not point at 燕雀鴻鵠, even though that might be their primary use), but in this case the connotation of the person indicated by 痩躯 is often tied to that indicated by 長身痩躯, and 長身痩躯 might frequently be more useful to the person examining this entry. |

Comments: | The reason for at least one xref is not explanatory, it is this is not the best term for "deify". 神格化 seams to be objectively preferable in terms of nuance and n-gram counts. If you search jmdict for "deify" today, this is the only term that comes up. This is misleading as an E->J entry. There are a number of xrefs of in jmdict of the form: [rare term] -> [probably what you actually want] For deify, "神と崇める" isn't rare, but "神格化" is "probably what you actually want" if you got here by searching "deify". I'm not sure if there is any practical remedy to this when all of the "deify" terms are under "deification". It's certainly not a problem limited to this entry though, I don't know if there is a practical solution. |

Comments: | I guess one can revere without worshipping, but "worship as a god" is more common in English. I was going to discuss deletion, and suggest the removal of "to deify" as a gloss, because I think the xref terms are better. Instead, I am going to advocate for keeping all of the higher-n-gram xrefs to "cheat". The xrefs are often [vs] forms, and are listed under "deification", making them pretty much undiscoverable. (search for "deify", you'll never find them). By adding these xrefs from a simple, understandable, common-enough-but less-common form, we expose all of the other "deify" entries to anyone doing such a search. |

|
Comments: | I wonder if there is an issue here that we didn't used to charge men with criminal assault over brawling as much as we do today, and that "criminal assault" has lost an older implied connotation. ... Came here to "correct" what I thought was an oversight, and saw that this was discussed and decided on deliberately. If you see this term on jisho.org, it looks like: (crime of) rape; criminal assault Law ("Law" in gray). While the goal of "people will infer sexual connotations from the first term" is understandable, [law] appears affixed to the second term. It's possible to read this as "colloquially used for [rape], but as a legal matter this is the general term for any criminal assault". If you search "criminal assault" in jmdict, this is currently the *only* matching entry, which also increases the chance of misunderstanding. I don't agree that "criminal assault" is limited to an understood euphemistic reference for rape. If you'd asked me out of the blue, "what is criminal assault", I would have said "someone attacks/injures another in a fight and got arrested/charged." "rape" would not have entered my mind. If you say "the woman was criminally assaulted by the male perpetrator", inferences would obviously be made. But "charged with criminal assault" is also what you'll get if one man punches another in a bar fight. I was going to just insert "sexual" in the middle of "criminal assault", but I think Tom's point from 2016 was well made. From a legal perspective "rape" in English (as far as I can see) requires penetration, as does the legal term 強姦罪. "Sexual assault" does not. I don't see the value of downgrading the term as a gloss. (people can do that on their own if they want) And given that 強姦罪 *requires* penetration, "criminal assault" seems like a massive understatement. I don't know what the other J-E dictionary motivations was here. If eijiro and ルミナス exclusively glossed this as "criminal assault", that seems way off, and it's hard to imagine a reason other than not wanting to include sensitive English vocabulary in their dictionary. For comparison, the jmdictdb entries for レイプ and 強姦 are already glossed: レイプ rape; sexual assault 強姦 rape; sexual assault In this case, as a matter of [law], this would appear to need to be *** criminal sexual assault (including penetration) I'm not advocating for or against such a gloss. That's a matter of everyone's sensibilities. The value of including "criminal assault" (especially when we don't even have entry in jmdictdb for the actual legal equivalent), seems to me to be outweighed by the more serious issues attached to this term. Translating 強姦罪 as "criminal assault" loses a whole lot of information, and blindly translating "criminal assault" as 強姦罪 could represent a massive error in modern use. |

Comments: | Aligning with update to 痩躯. Gloss with a slightly more positive connotation. Wasn't easy to verify with a real x-ref. Searched 長身痩躯 on wikipedia, and looked for "tall" in English-xrefed articles. Often applied to tall baseball players, but fairly non-specific. Usually omitted entirely in English. After that, usually glossed simply as "tall", as the slender bit is kind of implied and not-so-critical I guess. Perhaps 長身痩躯 is just more efficient to throw around in Japanese. Interesting term. And even though I dropped it from 長身, I also found "slim" as a gloss when describing a particular vampire's physique. But really, I think the author has a wide berth to do what they want with this. |

Comments: | See statistics at 芯のケース. Given that this is not the dominant form, it probably doesn't need to be here. If we want to keep it anyway, it should get an xref back in the other direction to 芯ケース. (I grant that in a vacuum, if you saw 芯のケース in a novel, even with the glosses for 芯 this would be difficult to guess if you didn't already know). |

Comments: | It appears that something reporting numbers back in 2011 was off, because comments are tied together with this and the xref'ed entry. This seems to be the dominant form(confirming the n-grams, search Amazon and the の form won't appear hardly anywhere on a product listing). Confirmed by twitter. People who use の tend no not abbreviate other parts as well, such as... シャーペンの芯のケース Interesting Is this [abbr] if it is the dominant form? シャー芯ケース , or something even longer, would seem to be the etymological root. |

Comments: | I'd be happy to drop it if the receive/incur/etc. sense of 負う was the main one. It's not; we have it as #3 and some JEs have it as #5. It's obviously a standard phrase and while rhe meaning might be obvious, it's not something I'd construct from scratch. I think it's useful to show that it's used this way. |

Comments: | Main comments at 嘱託殺人. There doesn't really seem to be a common gloss for this, and in many ways jmdict is helping to coin one. I did find (via reverso), the gloss above, which I think is a good "legal"-looking gloss and gets the meaning across, especially with the x-refs. Of course, as always, feel free to modify. |
