  Comments:
All the refs have it as a separate sense. It's helpful to show that the word can be used in this way. And there are already enough glosses on sense 1.
5. A* 2023-03-07 00:37:03  Nicolas Maia
  Comments:
Isn't sense 3 really just figurative uses of sense 1? Not sure it needs to be separate.
4. A 2023-03-06 05:36:15  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>

Most of the example sentences were sense 1. Quite a few are now sense 2.

While I appreciate the time and effort you're putting into this, I don't think this series of edits improve the entry. The kokugos define sense 2 as In their examples they use I don't think it makes sense to squeeze in "leave a company" there rather than group it in with "leave an idol group". Additionally I think your note and disambiguation go into too much detail and overcrowd the entry.
13. A* 2023-03-07 09:11:23  Brian Krznarich <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Sigh, not "post-dates...".
To correct my last thought: I think the modern usage of 卒業 as a euphemism for leaving a company (as in the nikkei article's 「今春、○○(会社名)を卒業させて頂くことになりました」)is newer than (and probably partially inspired by) the JPOP usage. But it is also consistent with a softening application of gloss [2].

Regarding transitivity, Meiko etc. treat it as vi. I notice also that mk has 「会社(学校・テニス部]を━)辞める as intransitive but (酒[販売]を━)止める as transitive. So... maybe our sense 3 should be?

Lots of questions about this on chiebukuro as well.
https://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/question_detail/q12189583437
Apparently たぐ.い was added to the 常用 list in 2010. Before that, 類 only had one reading on the list (音: るい).

This chiebukoro user saw 類い written in a recently-published novel written by a famous author. Then after using 類い at work, they were told by a work colleague that 類い is incorrect because it's written as 類 in kojien.

The impression that I get is that 類 is the most commonly used form, but the government is trying to promote 類い in official writing due to the ambiguity with るい. It seems this style hasn't yet entirely caught on, however.

Several JEs' glosses of "deify":

神格化する	4991 <- we have 神格化/deification
  Comments:
Perhaps we could have an entry for 神とする.
I'm no longer trying to use JMdict as a reverse search source, although it can be useful at times.
5. A* 2023-03-09 04:48:42  Brian Krznarich <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
The reason for at least one xref is not explanatory, it is this is not the best term for "deify". 神格化 seams to be objectively preferable in terms of nuance and n-gram counts.

If you search jmdict for "deify" today, this is the only term that comes up. This is misleading as an E->J entry.

There are a number of xrefs of in jmdict of the form:
[rare term] -> [probably what you actually want]

For deify, "神と崇める" isn't rare, but "神格化" is "probably what you actually want" if you got here by searching "deify".

I'm not sure if there is any practical remedy to this when all of the "deify" terms are under "deification". It's certainly not a problem limited to this entry though, I don't know if there is a practical solution.

By searching the Japanese I got one match:
神と崇められた天皇 "revered as a deity"

be worshipped as a god

  Comments:
I guess one can revere without worshipping, but "worship as a god" is more common in English.

I was going to discuss deletion, and suggest the removal of "to deify" as a gloss, because I think the xref terms are better.

Instead, I am going to advocate for keeping all of the higher-n-gram xrefs to "cheat". The xrefs are often [vs] forms, and are listed under "deification", making them pretty much undiscoverable. (search for "deify", you'll never find them).

By adding these xrefs from a simple, understandable, common-enough-but less-common form, we expose all of the other "deify" entries to anyone doing such a search.

My motivation is to make it abundantly clear that if you've encountered 属する in the wild, this probably is not the gloss. Wikipedia disambiguation for DOS. ドス does not appear anywhere
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOS

MS-DOS, ドス appears exactly once in the phonetic entry, and not even stand-alone: MS-DOS(エムエス-ディーオーエス、エムエスドス[2])
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS-DOS

Same story for DOS alone.

  Comments:
Summary - from what I can find, at least, it appears that [1] and [2] are far and away predominantly katakana. For [3], hiragana wins out, but not by a huge margin, and [see=どす黒い] removes that ambiguity. [4] is very different from the other terms, and has a restriction already. Counts don't appear to be influenced significantly by DOS/MS-DOS. [2] generally dominates the other counts, [1] is relatively rare in general. (should these be re-ordered?). Note, for example, 短刀 gets a whole wikipedia page, on which ドス get's a short paragraph.

yourei examples are all (or almost all) 脅す sense.

==
I changed the ドス /どす ordering after editing ドスのきいた. I won't post the long list, but if you do an n-gram search for the top 10/100 entries for
and
どすの
You'll see that first, the list is absolutely overwhelmed by the 脅す meaning(using 効かす・利かせる and even the mistaken 聞かせる), and second, ドス is the dominant form.
ドスを and どすを are similarly overwhelmed by a grammatical variation of the same structure.

For the knife, while even sankoku lists primarily under どす, I suspect this is a reflection of it being a "native" and historical Japanese word. I don't know if they would ever handle such a case with ドス(「どす」とも書く).

It actually appears rare that ms-dos was written as ドス. the wikipedia page for ドス doesn't even list DOS or MS-DOS as disambiguation options. Google "ドスソフト" or "ドス・ソフト" or "ドスのソフト" and you get almost nothing. Replace with "DOSソフト" or "DOSのソフト" or "MS-DOSソフト" and you'll get results. It seems the trendy thing for Japanese people to do might have been to use the English acronym, like DVD etc.

I'm not convinced ドス should lead. The JEs don't have it and most kokugos don't mention it. I think it's possibly noise from DOS.

Fair enough. It's alright with me if this is rejected for exactly the reasons you gave.

I wasn't going out of my way to add this entry, this was a side effect of editing 蒔かぬ種は生えぬ and wanting to excise "nothing comes from nothing" from there. I started the entry before I learned it was from greek, and then just decided to finish it.

In the rare/exceptional case that an English gloss happens to be coincidentally used on some entry, and it has a "recognized" translation into Japanese(as "nothing comes from nothing" was/does), then I think it might still be a good idea to also have an entry for the recognized Japanese form.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nothing_comes_from_nothing
Nothing comes from nothing (Greek: οὐδὲν ἐξ οὐδενός; Latin: ex nihilo nihil fit) is a philosophical dictum first argued by Parmenides. It is associated with ancient Greek cosmology, such as is presented not just in the works of Homer and Hesiod, but also in virtually every internal system: there is no break in-between a world that did not exist and one that did, since it could not be created ex nihilo in the first place.

This is an incredible article, where the guy actually spends several paragraphs on introducing the history of the philosophical argument before even attempting to apply it in an everyday context.

And his point is "My point is that food, and fashion, and business ideas come from everywhere – and often by joining – or colliding one form or tradition with another.".
It's nothing to do with diligence or hard work(蒔かぬ種). It's about acknowledging a creator (or acknowledging the history/roots of what we have).

  Comments:
Was adding this to try and clean up 蒔かぬ種は生えない a bit, where "nothing comes from nothing" was listed as a gloss.

無からは何も生じない seems like it's actually a really good example of 生じる... (which I've always found mysterious)

jisho.org already links this straight out of wikipedia.

But, the more I read about this, the more I think these phrases are not actually related. This phrase is principally an argument about creation (ie. in the religious context) and the nature of existence. If you actually search twitter for the quoted strings "from nothing, nothing comes" or "nothing comes from nothing", the posts are actually relevant to religion, atheism, creation, etc. They aren't random cliches.

One non-religious use supports this: "Nothing comes from nothing, something comes from many smaller somethings.
It's true in physics, it's true in life."
https://twitter.com/joelwrightdev/status/1627835522889695235

This is not to say that no-one has used "nothing comes from nothing" in the sense of 蒔かぬ種は生えない。Example twitter video ("there are no shortcuts in life"):
https://twitter.com/DmuscleTV/status/1625890830455083011

But this seems to be the exception.

As such, I think any attempt to link this and 蒔かぬ種は生えない (which I think is mostly about diligence and hard work) would do more harm than good.

I would like it to be clear, if possible, that the etymology of this phrase is not Japanese(which is why I included "greek philosophical argument"). This is be no means an every-day Japanese saying, but it's not hard to find if you look for it see: twitter. Even found a pretty calligraphic rendition:
https://twitter.com/GSSsurounandane/status/853587638745485313

There is a latin gloss "ex nihilo, nihil fit"(wikipedia), but I don't see the point since this is a greek expression. I don't think this is a particularly well-known bit of latin in any case.

I can't think of a shorter way off-hand to simplify my original wording than this suggestion, and still keep the meaning. I'd really like to retain something like this...

Part of the reason I tried so hard to figure out this term was because it reflects the nuance of 嘱託.

In this case, 嘱託社員 is *specifically* applied to keeping Japanese employees active in the same company they retired from (because specialized knowledge is still needed, for example).

post-retirement-contract-employee has the risk of being read as "work program for old people", having lost the detail that they've remained with their former employer.

I'd personally leave off the "part-time employee" gloss entirely. You would never go from "part-time employee" to this term in the E->J direction, and it's really a small, and not-strictly-necessary detail in the J->E direction. I mean, of course contractors are often part-time.

Overview of Non-regular Employment in Japan

· Contract employees: relatively long fixed-term, full-time, direct employment
· Entrusted employees: relatively long fixed-term, full-time, direct employment

Here, the differentiation between a contract employee and an entrusted employee
becomes an issue. In many cases, contract employees are further defined as employees
specifically hired to perform a specialized type of work whereas an entrusted employee is
often used to refer to a senior aged worker who is re-hired by his/her last employer after
his/her mandatory retirement

Footnote 4: However, these definitions do not necessarily match actual treatment of employees. There are many full-time
workers working a predetermined number of hours but being referred to as part-time workers or similar. In
addition, there are many contract employees who perform tasks other than a specialized type of job, as well as
entrusted employees who are relatively younger in age.

https://www.eevocablog.com/contract-employee/

https://www.kaonavi.jp/dictionary/syokutakusyain/

On doctors, it seems 嘱託 may be used for part-time highly skilled contract arrangements, but probably not so much 嘱託社員。(嘱託医 instead, we have an entry for this)

委嘱 and 嘱託 currently have nearly identical glosses, but extremely different use cases. This is the first step in trying to tease that out.

Google 嘱託社員 イラスト and you'll get pictures of old men working.

I personally find the term "entrusted employee" unhelpful, but this seems to be how the Japanese government officially translates this into English. (I have seen it in various places)

I chose "employee" specifically over "worker", as the role is generally to continue their previous tasks in some capacity. Even in the non-post-retirement scenario, indications are that this is for the performance of internal company tasks (一定の業務), rather than something discrete that could be readily outsourced.
