Open to better/alternative suggestions.

I was trying to figure out the grammatical structure of this thing, and discovered that it is overwhelmingly used in one particular structure (or minor variations thereof).
"to have a promising future", "to have high hopes of another's future prospects", etc.

Even when not in this structure, される is almost always used. (can follow が、と、を、で,etc.)

Note particularly my referenced comparison with 期待 in the same structure.

So rare I favor delete. No apparent kokugos. Will be evident in context if encountered (全般 + 前哨), google results are primarily JE dictionary entries (some quite old).

Else definitively [rare].

Appears to exists as a rare calque of the english gloss, perhaps used sometimes in the military, often appears (to the extent that it does appear) as 全般前哨(GOP). GOP = General Out Post (if you search this term on wikipedia, it appears *once*, on an article on the korean demarcation line/DMZ).

https://www.plansponsor.com/tuesday-trivia-phrase-grasping-straws-come/?layout=print#:~:text=It comes from a proverb,the side of a river.
It comes from a proverb in Thomas More’s “Dialogue of Comfort Against Tribulation” (1534) which says, “A drowning man will clutch at straws.” It is said that the “straw” in this case refers to the sort of thin reeds that grow by the side of a river.
  Comments:
It was odd to see such a long-form idiom with kanji ranked at the bottom. Full kanji form is prevalent on twitter, supported by n-grams.

Seems like a bit of a fools errand to catalogue all combinations of
溺れ・おぼれ
もの・者
藁・わら・ワラ
掴む・つかむ
(24 combinations, all probably in use somewhere). Likewise, I don't know about displaying any particular alternate surface form. *In particular*, for learners をも掴む would suffer by being written in kana, since をも is so unusual, and the "verb" would probably be guessed as もつかむ. (I had this problem myself, even with the kanji... I tried to figure out why もつかむ wasn't in the dictionary anywhere). I added some [sK] forms that are more popular than the ones here, and I mostly just pulled them out of a hat. There are surely even more.

Japanese also has the old form(をも掴む) /modern-form (にも縋る) dichotomy, so I felt ok replacing the English gloss with what appears to be the most common structure. (clutch).

I didn't associate the English gloss with "grasping at straws", I had no idea this was an English idiom, or that it was the source of "grasping at straws".
I thought this was a piece of ancient East-Asian wisdom. Couldn't find a Japanese etymology, I think it's suspected to be a calque from English, but unknown.

In place of a [lit] gloss, I think the xref helps clears up a lot.

My motivation is to make it abundantly clear that if you've encountered 属する in the wild, this probably is not the gloss. Why katana are made from crappy steel?
(among other things, "in japan, katana are considered works of art, and traditional materials must be used in making them")
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/BYdbStLBNk0

Japanese wikipedia lists 砂鉄, which is iron sand or ironsand.
English wikipedia entry on tamahagane does not contain the word "black".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamahagane
Tamahagane (玉鋼) is a type of steel made in the Japanese tradition.[1] Tamahagane is used to make Japanese swords, knives, and other kinds of tools.

https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/玉鋼
玉鋼と日本刀
[current major tamahagane manufacturer]たたら製鉄で作られた鉄は元来は様々な用途に使われてきたが、靖国および日刀保たたら以降はほぼ日本刀製作専用の鋼材となった[注釈 10]。

Definition of "Black sand" is apparently "sand that is black in color"(has a whole wikipedia page too). ironsand is black, but other black sands do not apply here.
  Comments:
Just saw a random youtube video (why do katanas use tamahagane?). (The answer focused on maintaining tradition, and its ability to be worked by hand. Anything called "katana" today apparently *must* be made with this steel).

Wondered what the kanji was.

removed "black sand" (appears incorrect)

Reworded since I was editing.

Left as "iron sand" (and not ironsand as headed in wikipedia, as most reverso matches for 砂鉄 are translated "iron sand", and 砂鉄 is already under "iron sand" here).

Most wikipedia discussion revolves around a history of sword making, though of course at times steel could be used to make other things. Old gloss also mentioned swords, this feels uncontroversial.

The Japanese is actually an idiom rather than a proverb (my bad). Not sure the "give sb an inch" can be worked into an idiom?
"to give someone an inch and have a wole yard taken"? it's a little awkward.

英文	Give him an inch and he’ll take a mile.

  Comments:
Alternate suggestion, single gloss only:

give someone an inch and they'll take a mile

========= Long winded reasoning
Before adding a new entry for a variant of this Japanese idiom, I'd like to add to the discussion on the current glosses, and see if something different might be considered.

Google N-gram Corpus Counts
庇を貸して母屋	1530
軒を貸して母屋	908 NEW

Adding to Stephen's comment, I have also have never heard the "ell" formation (though it's fair to say I'm not well versed in literature). Kids these days I guess... (I'm 42). I also immediately though "wouldn't mile be better than yard?" Obviously all of these formulations, and a number of variants (give 'em an inch, give them an inch, give someone an inch) are all in circulation(with "ell" appearing to be the origin)

Currently, Cambridge Dictionary online has a single, modern / gender-neutral formulation:

- give someone an inch and they'll take a mile

No mention of yards or ells. If it were me, I would just use this gloss alone. I think it's likely to be readily understood by native English speakers, and safe to use for Japanese learners who acquire it via jmdict (I would not necessarily say the same of the "inch/ell" formulation).

=====

Just looking at cute quotations and comic images, if you do a google image search for just the quoted prefix, you get the following rough counts for "miles", "yards", "foot", "ells", and "furlongs"(hah)... As you move toward gender neutrality (~modern usage), miles seems to gain in popularity.

"give someone an inch" 17 miles, 1 yard, 0 ells
"give them an inch" 12 miles, 2 yards, 0 ells
"give em an inch". 6 miles, 2 x "foot", 1 furlong, 0 ells
"give him an inch" 3 miles, 5 yards, 2 ells (there were a bunch of additional t-shirts with the "yard" expression)

Also anecdotally, a twitter search for "give someone an inch" seems to be entirely "miles" (though other formulations sometimes yield different results)

Not sure the best way to fix the gloss in a neutral way, so thank you in advance to anyone who can help.

Hmmm, just googled "living up to reputation" and thefreedictionary did almost exactly what I did:

Still not claiming that's the right thing to do here.

  Comments:
I won't be surprised if でゎでゎ stays [sk], but as a learner/linguist I would like to say it feels like a shame to hide でゎでゎ as a surface form.

It may be 2% of total use, but with 20,000 hits it's quite common considered in isolation. It's not a spelling error either, it's a "correct" informal use.

Seeing the form gives a sense of who is using this (young people), and also makes it clear why でわでわ is on the list. I don't think people are likely to use it on accident, but it might spark some interesting conversations with natives.

*I* only discovered this because the linked reference on ではでは *also* went out of its way to mention this form. That's how common it is (in certain circles).

jmdict has entries for 草(LOL), a note "See also w, multiple repetitions of "w" ("LOL") resembles grass: wwwwww", and other fun entries. I think that's to its credit. Well, my 2p.

So you don't all have to watch the youtuber video (very cute though) here's 90% transcript: (Speaker is a young Japanese woman whose father is texan but was principally raised in Japan. Bilingual, but stronger in Japanese; broadcasts in both languages).

"dewadewa, I say this a lot. dewa dewa dewa. It's kinda like a - well, then... when you change the subject or something like that, you add the dewa dewa... so, before you guys were talking about something completely different, added dewa dewa, you can change it to the different topic, or, bring it back to the previous topic. ........ I like to se dewadewa, or それでは, or those kinds of words, because I don't like being silent [while thinking of what to say].... BUT ALSO we use dewa dewa as sayonara as well. dewa! like that, like, bye! dewa dewa, like that. It means sayonara or goodbye".

In the expression below, it's a preamble to "goodbye". "well them, everyone have a good weekend, goodnight".

Decided to err on the side of [col]. The forms using わ are definitely col, and probably [net-sl]. However, ではでは is also a spoken form, and this is how I actually first encountered it. See video reference if you like.

possibly seen by some as sitting between じゃ and では in terms of formality.

Added "bye bye" as a gloss to try and emphasize some of the attached nuance.

Otherwise not sure if there's a good way to identify でわでわ and でゎでゎ is obviously more colloquial than ではでは (two separate entries?).

Learned about this in the attached video, which is quite extensive on the usage of ではでは. "Well then" or "goodbye". Roughly the same meanings as では[1]. Informal. Googled the referenced, giant writeup on the etiquette and implications of using this form.

Wasn't sure I trusted the n-grams till I saw でゎでゎ was 1/4 of でわでわ, which was 1/10th of ではでは. That seems pretty reasonable.

Linked website says it's fine to use in emails in closing(probable peers on friendly terms), fine to use in conversation. DO NOT use to superiors, but that's true of lots of things (それでは is also not recommended for 目上の人 and it doesn't have[col] or anything).

Mirrors the original dated grammar/vocab, maybe 50% as common as the modern equivalent (にも縋る)(very common). Could also clone 藁にも縋る思いで, which has its own entry

It's being used in the referenced video as a regular (counter + 中-suffix) construction.

I think an entry for the archaic usages will probably cause confusion. Better off without an entry IMO
