Comments: | added kanji form, ordered by ngrams. put more-literal "crawl down" as the first gloss. added "with hands and feet". Wordreference defines as: (descend by grasping) (手足を使って)降りる 自動 這い降りる This explains its application to trees (one of the yourei examples), ladders, and cliffs. I imagine this is why 這 is present (else 降りる alone suffices as "climb down"). Note: in our definition for 這い登る, "with hands and feet" isn't even parenthetical, it is literally: "to climb with hands and feet" This is [rare] in comparison to 這い登る "crawl up", no doubt because it is quite hard to actually crawl in the downward direction. |

|
Comments: | Not trying to be pedantic, 入り切る is a weird Japanese pairing (entering and cutting?), so I don't have any way of guessing whether this means "fitting inside a container" or "fitting in with a group", which is the usually meaning of "to fit in". Seems to be the former. In that case, the usual gloss would not be "to fit in" in any case, it would just be "to fit". "It fit's". "It doesn't fit". Seems to be used predominantly in the negative (it doesn't fit), but maybe that's the same in English and isn't actually remarkable. |

Comments: | Wondered the difference between 這いずる and 這う. There is perhaps less difference than I would have thought. sankoku defines 這いずる as: 這って進む. So... crawl forward? But once you add 回る, they seem pretty indistinguishable. sankoku specifically has entries only for 這いずる and 這いずり回る. (and not, for example, something like 這いずり出る). Intriguingly it does *not* have an entry for the analogous 這い回る, though it has lots of other compound verbs beginning with 這い. |
