[rare], moved actually-used kanji form to the front. the rest you can skip.

===
I don't trust this gloss, but it's basically a phrase in one haiku. I reversed the order of kanji to promote what actually appears in the haiku. Maybe in my free time I'll start asking Japanese people to describe a "窪溜まり" to me. My *guess* is something like

... a depression in the soil where water may accumulate

That's consistent with everything I have said (including the odd daijs gloss: a depression, or a depression with water...? )

  Comments:
sankoku has a separate entry for 横っ腹 that simply says:
【話】=>よこばら

n-grams don't really reflect what people say allowed, who knows. sankoku, nikk, and daijs all list the alternate pronunciation under the 横腹 entry.

I see there is a separate 横っ腹 entry. That doesn't change the reading here. furigana.info says of 横腹 (with examples):
よこっぱら	29.7%
よこばら	27.0%
よこつぱら	16.2%
https://furigana.info/w/横腹

Maybe these two entries should be merged with a note?

割栗石
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/割栗石
Google translate:Wariguri-ishi is a small block of stone made by splitting rocks, with a diameter of about 200 to 300 mm and a thickness of about 1/3 to 1/2 of the diameter. Crushed chestnut grounding refers to a process in which the crushed stone is cut into small pieces, and the top and bottom are laid alternately in a wedge shape, and then tamped down using cut gravel to close the eyes and level the top edge.
  Comments:
Looked like "crushed stone" from google image search, found what I was looking for after that.

Did not expect it to be this rare though, checked that second...

Note the daijs defn in particular. Identifies a crushed stone of a particular size for use as a building material. Nothing to do with rubble. The stones didn't break, they were crushed.

macadam seems to be just plainly incorrect. 砕石 is an ingredient, and that is all. 砕石 has innumerable other applications, and without tar/bitumen, it is not macadam. I can't imagine anyone would ever use 砕石 as a shorthand for asphalt.

sankoku lists as suru intransitive. Even so, marked the [vs] form as rare, as it certainly seems uncommon (and looking at actual use cases, I'm still not entirely sure what is being communicated. In some cases, it might even be "the application of crushed stone" (to a lawn)". But anyway, don't hold me to that, I didn't look that hard.

  Comments:
Tyler said, "三つ又 10719 // I found it in this form; did happen to be in the context of a trident".

I have also seen this in the *context* of a trident (something like 三叉の矛, as on wikipedia).

It does not appear that this term would ever be taken to *mean* trident in isolation. I have proposed two such entries separately: 三叉槍 三叉戟 (compare google image results for either of those, and any kanji entry here). I have encountered a third , apparently recent coinage, which I am ignoring 三又矛(みつまたほこ)。

Actually, I see no clear support for [1] at all. both sankoku and daijs give no straight [n] sense for 三つ叉, other than a clothes-drying-related tool, and the plant.

There seem to be some historically "grandfathered" terms with the さんさ reading, all of which we now have in jmdict:
The two spears entries I just added,
trigeminal nerve/neuralgia (三叉神経)
three-way intersection (三叉路)
There is a mountain named 三叉峰 さんしゃみね that we don't have (different reading, しゃ, as well).

Beyond that, the さんさ reading does not seem to be productive, and doesn't seem to need an entry outside of those terms. sankoku, for example, gives only 三叉路 and 三叉神経。Otherwise "さんさ" has no dedicated entry.

For new terms, the reading seems to always be みつまた.
三叉コンセント (three-port outlet) appears to be みつまた, not さんさ.

Magic The Gathering card game decided to use 三叉矛 , which I would have guessed as さんさほこ, but they furigana as みつまたほこ.

Here's a whimsical illustration of the clothes-drying stick, if interested:
物干し竿と三叉
https://twitter.com/koikawa01/status/1138437149328412672

Added xrefs to warn about the only two notable reading exceptions, which seems more useful than a generic "sometimes read as さんさ". I'm not arguing that this is a good approach in general(not something I would run around trying to do elsewhere), but for this specific case it seems like a clean approach that eliminates a lot of ambiguity.

If insisting on a standalone noun sense, I think it would be
: any object with three forks, prongs, branches, etc....
But "trident" and "three-pronged fork" seem way too specific and would rarely be correct for a random occurrence of 三つ又. And by relative volume, this is practically never the "subject" of a sentence, which is a final reason I don't think a dedicated [n] entry is needed:

三つ又が	160

More notes at 刺激.

Well, my intuition about 刺激 and "irritant" was evidently not correct. While 刺激性 can by definition be the quality of any sense of 刺激, in practice it is *especially* popular in marking a product or substance as causing an unwanted chemical/biological reaction.

The most common real-world translation is simply "irritant". Google image search is *all* chemical irritation, allergies, immune system reactions, etc.

pungent oder used in the context of cooking, also for intentionally-perfumed smell of natural gas. pungent things "irritate the nose", as it were. Still a chemical impact.

Outside of senses, seems most common as 刺激性のがる... (pungent... irritating... exciting...). As "a chemical irritant" is seems to have more direct grammatical application

For sense [2] and [3] of 刺激, converting to 刺激性 is a nearly impossible gloss. They are rarely used as it is, but "the quality of..." any of the terms over there. We could just copy/paste the whole list over.

I have yet to find an instance where "incentive" would function as a gloss, so I've left it off. As a noun, 刺激 alone might be read as an "incentive" if it motivates someone to action, and I've already said every term there could be copied here... But I don't know when "incentive" would ever be translated as 刺激性.

Sense [1] does seem to have the sense of "stimulant", but only as "provokes a reaction" (a reaction that is generally undesired, hence "irritant"). I don't think there is a positive connotation here that "stimulate" would suggest (at least for [1], not so for [2]).

The use of [2] seems principally to be 刺激性のある何々, so "having stimulating qualities/stimulation, exciting qualities/excitement" seems right to me...

I'm sure you'll all have other thoughts. I've thought about as long about this as I can, this is not a perfect entry by any means.

I'm translating a document about the architecture of Himeji Castle and the term 裏栗石 came up
...
I guess the English term is stone fill. But you need additional explanation to explain the Japanese dry stone technique. 裏栗石 is a river stone around 10 to 30 cm in diametre (or larger ones broken to the size; that's the definition of 栗石) as used to fill the space between the rocks on the surface and the inner earth mound.

https://www.token.co.jp/estate/useful/archipedia/word.php?jid=00016&wid=29121&wdid=01
「栗石」とは、丸みを持った径が15センチ以下の石のこと。

sankoku:
1 栗の実ぐらいの石
2 石垣や地盤固めに用いる、直径十数センチの石。割りギリ石。

Google, what size is cobblestone? 75-250 mm

https://southbaymaterials.com/products/cobbles#:~:text=Cobble landscaping rocks are naturally, ponds, and as natural accents.

https://www.aisf.or.jp/~jaanus/deta/k/kuriishi.htm
Also pronounced guri-ishi. Chestnut stones. Small stones (10-30cm in diameter) that were used as packing or backfill. Larger kuri-ishi were used to fill the cracks and spaces among ordinary stones *hira-ishi 平石, or the face of a castle's stone wall *ishigaki 石垣. Smaller kuri-ishi were used to back-fill the main stones, of a castle wall. Layers of chestnut stones might be one meter thick. Chestnut stones used as backfill were also called uragome-ishi 裏込石 (see *uragome 裏込), literally meaning stones to pack behind the main stones, or tsume-ishi 詰石 (packing stones).
  Comments:
I can't figure out what this *is*, but I am pretty confident that it is not cobblestone.

It's not this:
https://sslandscapesupply.com/product-tag/cobblestone/

There are more flexible definitions of "cobblestone" that might overlap, but they aren't what one would usually imagine.

栗石 more often than not these days seems to refer to 割栗石 wish covers a wide range of crushed rock/stone. The main characteristic of 栗石 is that it always appears in the context of construction (particularly historic excavations, walls, foundations, etc.). Bigger than gravel, *smaller* than cobblestone is one definition I found.

But the size isn't even fixed. Here someone just says "50cm幅の栗石が発見され", in an old wall. Here it may be referring to its quality as a large, naturally rounded river stone.
https://twitter.com/jcvd2000/status/1276290833302487040/photo/1

(The twitter poster may simply be wrong).

What really makes it a 栗石 seems to me to be that someone built something out of it (or that someone is imagining its use as a building material).

Here you can buy small, medium ,and large 栗石, the largest advertised as 最長対角線が1000mmを超える庵治石。 (庵治石 特大栗石)
https://ajirock.jp/ajiishi/ex_large_guristone

It's as if the word has lost all nuance. The best gloss is usually just "stone(s)".

I really wanted to do away with "cobblestones"- especially since it's not at all clear how "crushed cobblestones" = "crushed rock" (I don't think 割栗石 is the result of crushing 栗石, but rather the creation of 栗石 by crushing larger rocks), but I haven't found an adequate replacement.

1. ためておく こと・場所
2. 力を「溜めろ」こと。腰のーがいい
3. 時間をかけてじらすこと。「ーが長い」

This are the n-grams for the xrefs. Like I said, I'm not personally worried about adding these, they don't look like they'd be useful.
溜が長い	0	0.0%
ためが長い	94	100.0%
腰のためがいい	0	0.0%
腰の溜めがいい	0	0.0%

Although googling ためが長い, actually got some results if anyone things it's worth it:

読み方:つむぎ
ガ行五段活用の動詞「紡ぐ」の連用形、あるいは連用形が名詞化したもの。

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsumugi_(cloth)
Because of this structure, tsumugi is rough-surfaced, soft and drapey, softening further with age.

Originally, tsumugi was homemade from domestic or wild-gathered silkworm cocoons that had been broken by hatching[8] or were irregularly formed.[4] Unlike the long-fiber silk, such cloth was permitted to peasants.[9] Traditionally a peasant cloth, handmade tsumugi is very labour-intensive to produce, and has become expensive over time, valued as a luxury folk-craft.

  Comments:
The usual gloss in English for "紬" now appears to be the romanized tsumigi. It is considered to be "a japanese pongee". (You can search Ebay, or google for tsumigi).

At first I was going to suggest this be split into 2 *entries* (not just senses, as discussed on 紡ぎ糸).

But after a lot of reading, I don't think 紡ぎ is generally used as "pongee" or tsumugi. The high n-gram occurences are for spinning-related activities. reverso hits are all "spinning", wikipedia in English/Japanese list only 紬. The cleanest/simplest thing to do, without dictionary support suggesting otherwise (daijs doesn't), is to just [sK] it, or remove it entirely.

Also, the [expl] would appear to be off. sankoku specifically mentions the fabric being tough (あらい手ざわり, and not especially thin), and English wikipedia notes the same several times. Originally this was a low-grade silk product used by peasants.

If I understand correctly, this is not a particularly obscure term. If you see a picture of the cloth, you might remember the texture yourself if you've ever handled such a fabric (in a kimono, etc).

Some 脇芽 at least are also commonly called "suckers" in the case of tomatoes.

脇 may be doing double-duty here. With the meaning "side" it could be any lateral offshoot from the main stem. Given the "armpit", it rather plainly matches the definition of "sucker" which is a small offshoot that sprouts at the joint of a larger offshoot. (pictures make clear).

The is another term that wordreference as for "sucker", which is 吸枝. This actually seems like a rather uncommon translation by comparison.

生糸(SILK FILAMENT)、絹紡糸(SPUN SILK YARN)も貴重ですが、紬糸(SILK NOIL YARN )は日本では手に入れにくい素材になっています。菱型と三角形の帯で面取りし、懐かしい味わいの紬の手まり(紅の花)です。

100% tsumugi silk yarn on cone, japanese silk yarn for knitting, weaving and crochet, per 100g
This famous japanese yarn - 100% tsumugi silk - is very beautiful and soft. This is a real tsumugi silk yarn, NOT the italian bourette/noil silk also wrongly called tsumugi.
It is produced in Japan.

CATEGORY 紬糸 Silk Noil

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsumugi_(cloth)
It is a tabby weave material woven from yarn produced using silk noil, short-staple silk fibre (as opposed to material produced using longer, filament silk fibres).
Originally, tsumugi was homemade from domestic or wild-gathered silkworm cocoons that had been broken by hatching[8] or were irregularly formed.[4]

Tsumugi silk – what is that?
Posted on January 10, 2016 by Sophie
I have been asked twice recently about tsumugi silk. Well, the short answer is that tsumugi (紬) is a yarn spun from the silk waste, with nubs and some unevenness. Not shiny, but has a good grip – excellent choice for a weft if you’re thinking about a baby wrap, a shawl, or a scarf. And if it is spun firmly, it can be a warp too.

In other words, the silk noil or bourette silk, known to the Western world, is tsumugi silk.
  Comments:
I think this should be two entries. 紬糸 refers only to a particular kind of silk 糸 used in 紬, and not all silk thread(in particular I've come to learn "silk noir" or "raw silk"). An xref to my now-edited 紬 would make the meaning clear with little effort.

"tsumugi silk yarn" is a good gloss in the marketplace. I think in Japanese that 紬糸 is probably a good translation of "silk noir", but in English "tsumugi" should only refer to Japanese products...

For 紡ぎ糸, I just proposed an related entry for the probably-more-practical:
手紡ぎ糸
hand-spun yarn

  Comments:
(in spring) could be snipped out and change nothing about the definition, but since this serves predominantly as a haiku image for spring, it seems odd to leave that out. Stabling "in the winter" is critical to the definition, otherwise letting them out in spring has no particular meaning. Not all horses are kept indoors in winter, this is why 雪国 is mentioned specifically in nikk, and in haiku apparently the horses and cows can still see snow in the surrounding hills. This is an event that marks the transition from winter to spring.

Pretty much all google matches are haiku collections. Would be inclined to xref
[see=1222820] (季語 seasonal word in haiku), or to note it somehow in the entry, but I see no evidence that this is currently done elsewhere.

https://sectpoclit.com/uma/
季語としては、【春の季語】に「春駒(春の馬・馬の子・若駒・子馬・孕馬)」「厩出し」があります。

I had to look up the verb "to stable" and see if it could be used this way. Could say "kept indoors/inside/in-a-barn for the winter". Can you stable a cow? Internet says why not:
Barn
A building for hay and other farm products; also for stabling cattle and horses.

ゲームの世界に迷い込んだようなポップで可愛い色の手紡ぎ糸です。
This hand-spun yarn has cute pop colors that make you feel as if you have wandered into a game world.
  Comments:
We have an entry currently 紡ぎ糸 which is mixed up with 紬糸. The usual appearance of "紡ぎ糸" ("spun yarn") is 手紡ぎ糸 ("hand-spun yarn").

If it's worth having a dedicated entry for 紡ぎ糸, then I think the common form merits an entry. Just google
"手紡ぎ糸" "hand-spun"
directly, and the examples are plentiful. Hand-spun yarn is becoming a somewhat popular modern craft activity.
