I actually came to edit this because jisho.org doesn't flag this as "common word". Is [spec2,news2,nf27] not enough to qualify (vs news1,spec1...).

Is there a manual way to flag this as "common"? Surely it qualifies. "spoon" is common at 1/3rd the n-grams. Maybe "delusion" is not so common a term in news articles for professional reasons.

Went ahead and sK'd the oK kanji. That seems like a pretty low percentage, even to me.

  Comments:
Usage (among others): 妄想癖がある人 : a person with ~

Literally, "a tendency toward fantastical/made-up thinking."

The *癖 entries are habits and tendencies, not people. This entry stood out.

I discussed this with a Japanese woman, mid-20s, who said the term is super common. "delusion" would be far too strong. The term is used frequently to describe the personality traits of characters in anime/manga/etc. (I can see this on wikipedia listings for various manga that give character summaries).

I can find no apparent translations of this term online. After a lot of work trying to match up Japanese wikipedia articles that had *anything* like the equivalent, and reading a bunch of parallel character descriptions without literal translations, I thought of "overactive imagination". My Japanese correspondent said: "過活動の想像…yes perfect one".

I think the article [an] is needed for comprehensibility (usually as: a person with ~).

I don't think this is especially [col], and I think it has ample descriptive use that it's not a sensitive term on its own. Obviously you can use it as an insult, but isn't anything like a slur in isolation. Japanese correspondent said she'd have no trouble using it to describe her self at times (not that this excludes it from being sensitive).

Number one urban-dictionary entry for happy-go-lucky(matches my intuitions):

Happy-Go-Lucky: A person who is incredibly optimistic and high on life. They are usually peppy and make the best out of every situation. They're fun to be around and can brighten anyone's day.
Wouldn't we all want to be as Happy-Go-Lucky as her?

defn 2:Easy going, carefree, nonchalant.
defn 3:To be happy go lucky, is to be cheerful about most all things. To have a positive view on life.
defn 4:A person who is a pleasure to be around. They dont sweat the small stuff. They tend to laugh easily but not forceably so. They tend not to care about trival matters. They are most always well adjusted and have no anger issues.

One the weight of this phrase (note the terms that surround it. used somewhat lightly in the context of being optimistic sports fans in an unlikely-to-succeed scenario, I think)

What does お花畑の本領発揮 mean?
(2)
"お花畑"=Flower gardenが、ほんとうのいみです。
but、
loveのsituationであれば
"あたま(head)=お花畑"といういみなので、
That guy's really living with his head in the clouds.
Head over heels in love.
というようないみです。

好きって言われて舞い上がってるお花畑 means someone that will become hyped just because of getting told 好き. (In this sentence , お花畑 is used as insultation.)

Head in the clouds -> あははぁ~お花畑だお(^q^)空想中
  Comments:
Actually, I thought to google synonyms for "space cadet" and think I found something that is actually quite a good match. "head in the clouds". Covers a lot of the usage I've seen, essentially-positive imagery with a negative connotation, but that can be used introspectively. (I had my head in the clouds, do I have my head in the clouds/ is my head in the clouds?).

It matches people whose behavior changes after falling in love, or who live their lives in blissful ignorance of the reality that needs to be dealt with. It is also applicable as a temporary state. Everything I have seen of 脳内お花畑 suggests that it needs not be permanent. (Can be a 厨二病 condition you outgrow, being in love, or a situation when your mind is temporarily somewhere else).

Removed "dreamer", because this is usually a positive term in English. It's more "optimist" than ignorant.
Removed "happy-go-lucky", because this is mostly a positive (and permanent) character attribute(see refs). And I think "head in the cloud" covers what is needed. As a practical matter, when would you gloss a Japanese derogatory insult with an English compliment?

I changed the [lit] gloss to something more approachable, but still [lit], (and if we add 頭の中 it will differ only as "inside the head" vs "inside the brain", or maybe not differ at all).

It may be that お花畑 merits some kind of note on this of its own. Seems that this brain=お花畑 analogy is well enough understood お花畑 might stand alone with sufficient context. Might serve in place of creating a bunch of 頭の中... variations.

Other potential English glosses...
space cadet
blissfully ignorant person
someone out of touch with reality
someone in a world of their own
absent-minded person

As an English gloss of a mild insult in this category, I saw "space cadet" (specifically attached to 天然ボケ), thought that was interesting.

urbandictionary includes of spacecadet:
not necessarily a person of low intelligence or a heavy drug user, but rather one who is so easily lost in reverie that he or she loses all awareness of the surrounding physical world.

This usage mirrors the self-referential use here. Basically "Is my infatuation with my partner causing 脳内御花畑". Not that anyone would use "space cadet" self-referentially though.

And here is ChatGPT's response:
The Japanese term 亢竜有悔 (kōryū yūkai) is a proverb that can be translated to "Pride precedes a fall" or "When the dragon rises high, there is regret." This proverb warns against excessive pride or arrogance that may lead to failure, disappointment, or regret.

In the proverb, the dragon symbolizes a person's ambitions, power, or success. When the dragon becomes too confident and overreaches, it risks falling from a great height and experiencing regret. The proverb emphasizes the importance of maintaining a balance between ambition and humility, and being mindful of the risks and consequences of one's actions.
