I'm marking 咳く as [rare] and pointing it here for lack of anywhere else to point it.

How to handle? JMDictdb has one verb form for "to cough" 咳く, and it is particularly rare. 咳 is not [vs], but it is をする, and just as often が出る (the form I learned in school). "to cough" seems like a pretty unfortunate omission. (コホンコホン would do in a pinch, if someone is studying their onomatopoeia).

I'd probably create both 咳をする and 咳が出る as independent entries, but I'm too afraid they'd be immediately rejected. There is a "danger", if slippery-slopes are of concern, that there are other medical terms that work this way. I think 血が出る is "to bleed" (which is also missing), although 鼻血が出る (to have a nosebleed) is already here. I think "to cough" would be a worthy exception if this was considered exceptional.

I also don't mind just handling as a note like I've done. (also, even as an exception).

I checked on bleeding...

This means this isn't needed:

乾咳 is very nearly [rK] by n-grams.

Not sure why Japanese people write カラ in kana... By analogy with カラオケ?Too many readings on 空く. I'm sure they write から咳 sometimes as well, but these n-grams are overwhelmed by ~から、咳...

  Comments:
I'll offer another note I thought of after waking up. Won't be broken up about it if you drop it as well.

I think "the definitive ~" is probably an excellent gloss in many cases, but it would be hard to shoehorn "definitive" into a noun as an explicit gloss. If this were[adj-no], for example, it seems probably that "definitive" would be given. ”The definitive recipe for fried chicken".

The note also serves the function of making usage crystal clear. (Though yes, this is perhaps not necessary).

I ran into 通常版・通常盤 before this entry, and my intuition was to tease out the subtle differences between 版 and 盤 and create two different entries. When I saw how 決定版;決定盤 was handled, I felt a tremendous sense of relief(both in terms of writing the entries, and in understanding them as a learner).

Even sankoku sticks them together

表記(red note): CD・レコードは[決定盤]と書く。

It's an anomaly in Japanese to be sure, but I don't think there is anything to tease out by splitting them apart. I'd wager that [2] doesn't technically even need the [restr]. [2] is excluded by the simple fact that you'd have a hard time applying to anything but a record or music CD. If you had some kind of non-music vinyl disc product that was the best of its kind, you probably could call it 決定盤 in sense[2].

The tweet below contrasts two types of people, a good 肖り者, and a bad 吸血鬼(blood-sucking demon). Surely "lucky person" isn't right here either - rather, someone worth of emulation?

Question about Japanese
Is 肖り者 a common word?
https://hinative.com/questions/13978647?feedbackable=true&pos=1&utm_content=search_questions_index&utm_medium=referral&utm_search_language_id=45&utm_source=hinative&utm_term=肖り者
"people are envious"
I think that words with this nuance do not exist in modern Japanese.

if you say...

"幸せ者" siawase-mono (happy person)

Japanese people can understand "Lucky".
You can communicate English words.

"ラッキーボーイ" (Lucky boy)
"ラッキーガール" (Lucky girl)
ーー
When I want him to share his happiness:
「肖りたい!」(ayakari-tai)
肖る share somebody's good luck
たい want

====

肖り者 (ayakari-mono) is not a common word.
肖り者:
A person who is so happy that people are envious.

@pompomriver Ah I thought it meant a lucky person lol
What's a common way to say that someone's always lucky?
....
  Comments:
See first: changes to 肖る

Super rare, but a few hits on twitter.

Because it is super rare, there's not much practical need for a compact gloss. I think it's better that if someone actually looks this term up, that they understand the nuance of what is being said. (In fact, it doesn't seem so off from a simple 羨ましい, and I've seen these two terms paired).

Instead, the long-winded gloss I've given better reflects the meaning of the kanji ("resemblance", nothing at all to do with luck), and removes the mystery of why this term exists.

One should never think 肖り者 is a good term for "lucky person" (as one hinative poster did). Even if concern for J->E is secondary, complicating the gloss eliminates this risk.

Note the terrible tatoeba E->J gloss:
彼はたいした肖り者だ。
What a lucky person he is! - Tatoeba例文

gloss [2] is right out of daijs.

As a super-simple gloss, could do "enviable person" for [1] I guess. To me it does more harm than good (English speakers generally shouldn't use 肖り者, and we're also unlikely to need the gloss given the rarity of this term. And, as an exclamation (as I've seen on twitter), it's still a stilted gloss anyway).

Found this on twitter. あやかり者 might mean "idiot" in some dialects. I think I saw some twitter uses where this seemed to be the case
日本でも方言で「あやかり者」がしばしば馬鹿を意味します。

I'll raise an issue on the proverb/idiom tagging.
Should this one be glossed differently? I don't think so.

  Comments:
Had no idea what this meant from the glosses until I dug into it. (I thought maybe the bat was better at catching bugs with no birds around?).

sankoku: 強いもの、優れたもののないところで、つまらないものが威張る。
This could literally be translated as an [expl] if the [lit] gloss remains unclear. Of note つまらない and 威張る both have negative connotations. "idiots will boast/think highly of themselves".

It's a parable about not thinking too highly of your abilities. You don't want to be the bat. To say that someone is a bat in a village without birds is to say that they act like they're smart, or they manage to appear successful to those around them, but they can only succeed in this because people with actual talent are not around.

”a man among the geese when the gander is away” is impressively obscure. I thought maybe it was a mixed metaphor. But no, a quote from ~1670 suggesting that a man is no good with women, except in an environment where no other men are around. In that regard, its quality as an insult is similar. But I suspect it has no application beyond womanizing, and since the idiom is not known, it's not of much use.

"In the land of the blind" is often cited as analogous, but the nuance seems completely different. 鳥なき里の蝙蝠 is leveled as an insult to the bat for acting like he's talented, when in fact you'd find more talented birds if you left the village. The "village" is not the universe( and though there were weak daimyo in Chosokabe Motochika's Shikoku, there were strong daimyo elsewhere in Japan). In "the land of the blind", the one-eyed man never leaves that land. That is the end-state, and his talent of sight is legitimately powerful. Being the one-eyed man is, if anything, an enviable position.

I also thought of the "big fish in a small pond" suggested (and discarded) some years back. The problem there is that it also isn't really an insult. It describes a situation in which someone gets a shock moving into more competitive waters. "He used to be a big fish in a small pond, but now he's struggling...." Doesn't imply that the person is "full of them self" or possessing excessive hubris in their small pond. It's just the reality of their situation. They may be ignorant of the larger world, but this does not impugn their character.

There are related expressions in Japanese with various animal combinations. Maybe the second most common (after this one) I could find is about weasels in place without a stronger breed of weasel... 鼬の無き間の貂誇り
自分よりも力の強いものやすぐれたものがいない所で威張ることのたとえ
https://proverb-encyclopedia.com/itatinonakimanotenhokori/

If there's no reasonably-equivalent, reasonably well-understood English idiom, I'd rather not try to force one in.

Brian, I appreciate the effort and time you're investing here but it would be immensely appreciated if you could be (much!) more concise in your arguments. Your edits are, frankly, exhausting to check.

Explanatory glosses should be explanatory glosses, not explanations, but I'm having a hard time seeing the need for either - I don't quite get what it is that's so puzzling to you about the literal Japanese because it seems very clear to me. I also don't see the issue with "a one-eyed man in the land of the blind", it seems obvious what proverb its a reference to.

I'm OK with this being glossed as a proverb for now.

I had prepared the following, then forgot to press submit. I now see Brian has made another proposal.
------
GG5 tags it as 【諺】 and most expressions tagged that way we have tagged as [proverb]. Probably many should be tagged as idioms, e.g. "浅瀬に仇波 (あさせにあだなみ) (exp) (proverb) deep rivers move in silence".
I'll raise an issue on the proverb/idiom tagging.
Should this one be glossed differently? I don't think so.

  Comments:
... the [expl] is not tightly worded, you all would probably have better wording than I could produce.

Agree that this is [n], either directly as 彼は...蝙蝠だ, or as 蝙蝠みたいだ。 There is a good reason that this was originally glossed as the unnatural "a one-eyed king in the land of the blind".

You work in an office of 20 people. People are generally intelligent, people generally do their jobs well. People are *not* generally tech savvy though, but one guy in the office "knows computers", and is constantly bragging about his ability to fix/manage/maintain them(even though his skills are rather mediocre). He's the only "tech guy" in the office, so people put up with it. He's the bat in a village without birds.

The office workers don't make him king. They begrudgingly tolerate him in the limited area where they have no choice. (This is reflected in the fact that calling someone a 鳥なき里の蝙蝠 is fundamentally an insult).

Is that in this gloss somewhere? Is that an "In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king"?

Or, here's a simple one:
https://twitter.com/ba17_Eri/status/1082149051762536448
鳥なき里の蝙蝠みたいな人は嫌いだよ
I hate one-eyed bats in villages without birds. = I hate one-eyed kings in lands of the blind?

I'm certainly not going to die on the hill of removing the "one-eyed-man" gloss, because I don't think I'll convince you. It's not as though it's never an appropriate gloss. It's just that the base nuance is significantly different, and so it is significantly inadequate in communicating what this idiom means, both in the J->E and E->J direction.

Just take Marcus's last example. A Japanese person as at a job interview says:
"I will try to not become a bat in a village without birds".

Ok... I, an English speaker, read this on twitter and think "ok, let me look that up....". Here, it says this means "I will try not to become a one-eyed king in a country of the blind".

What is that supposed to mean, and *why* would a Japanese person even consider saying such a thing in a job interview?

On top of that, I can say concretely(personal experience) that it is completely unclear what the literal expression is supposed to mean(like I offered earlier, is it about eating lots of bugs?). But there *is* a meaning, which something like the one I added in parenthesis (or, as imidas explains 鳥として扱われ ~ is treated by the villagers as if he is a bird for lack of other options). And the bat is understood to be completely full of himself for thinking he is such an excellent bird (or so good at flying). It *doesn't* (inherently) mean the villagers don't know that birds exist. There just aren't any around. It is not an inherent slight on the villagers. (thought it seems it could maybe be used as such) If it were a slight against the village, it couldn't be used in an interview, and wouldn't have been used in my Keio University graduation-speech example.

Adding a parenthetical clarification explains the gloss in the J->E direction, and explains the metaphor more completely in the E->J direction to anyone looking it up.

To Marcus's three example sentences:
「こんな会社で出世しても、鳥なき里の蝙蝠みたいで、なんだかむなしいな」
Even if you get ahead in this company, you'll just look to colleagues like you're exploiting the lack of competition (and thus they will have no respect for you, they'll consider you a 鳥なき里の蝙蝠), so what's the point.

Or perhaps: you're only getting ahead because there are no talented people in the company, so what's the point. I'd rather succeed in an environment with intelligent people and competition. (one-eyed man kind-of works if this is the intention)

kotowaza-dictionary
彼は自分の部署では王様のように振舞っているそうだ。まるで鳥なき里の蝙蝠だよ。
Perfect example of what I mean. The sentence says "彼はまるで蝙蝠だよ". He's arrogant, he thinks he knows everything. But, in fact, he's an idiot with no one smarter around to challenge him. It's not a slight against the employees at all ("the land of the blind"). 振舞っているそうだ ~ "I've heard from the people who work with/under him that...".

Let's try the English gloss... "He acts like a king in his department, but he's actually a complete one-eyed man in a land of the blind". ??? Sounds like you're insulting the employees to me.

random tweets
人事面談で「鳥なき里の蝙蝠にならないように気をつけます」って言ったら(何言ってんだこいつ・・・?)みたいな空気になってしまいしょんぼりした。
Who would ever say "I will become careful to not become a king in the land of the blind". Or "I will be careful to not become a one-eyed king".

It was an interview, and he was literally trying to say:

"I understand the importance of humility. "

Look at the replies to the thread:

Re:Re 人事なら知ってるかなと思ったんですがダメでしたね
The were HR (Human Resources), so I thought they'd know (the reference), but I guess not.

Finally:
僕らは所詮は井の中の蛙であり鳥なき里の蝙蝠。
Twitter died before I could find the source, but it seems rather philosophical and self-deprecating ("we are merely...") to me. Searching for 井の中の蛙 and 鳥なき里の蝙蝠 I got following gloss on a Chinese phrase with associated commentary:
https://gogakuru.com/chinese/phrase/19698
“夜郎自大”は身の程をわきまえずに偉そうに振る舞うことのたとえで、日本語では「井の中の蛙」や「鳥なき里のこうもり」に近い意味です。相手を批判・非難する際などによく使われる辛辣な言葉なので、使うときには注意が必要です。
Google:"Yarojidai" is a parable of acting arrogant without knowing one's position, and in Japanese it means something similar to "a frog in a well" or "a bat in a village without birds." It is a harsh word that is often used when criticizing the other person, so you need to be careful when using it.

Here's a case where I thought "one-eyed man" almost worked, but on reflection, there's still a problem
https://twitter.com/MilitantL/status/1603199098517348352
安倍というのは鳥なき里の蝙蝠みたいなものだったが、蝙蝠もいなくなっての見苦しいドタバタ。
Abe was a bat... but now that's he's gone... (was a one eyed king, but now that he's gone...)

Saying Abe "may have been a bat an a village without birds" is saying, "he was an idiot, true, but without even a bat, party's gone to pieces".

If you say that the everyone-is-blind political-party lost their one-eyed king, well, going to pieces is the *expected* outcome. At least they had someone who could see, of course they would be worse without him.

Well, that's why a removed the one-eyed man gloss. It's an "obvious" match, but it's very shallow in its application. Any attempt to substitute one idiom for the other in J->E or E->J is as likely as not to lead to some form of misunderstanding.

Two final thoughts:
1. The English expression seems far more readily understood than the Japanese one (hence the Japanese interview flub). There are pitfalls in aligning widely-known idioms with less-known idioms.
2. As has already been acknowledged, structurally these don't match up at all. It would be difficult to exchange one for the other without considerable grammatical manipulation.

These expressions are always tricky to handle - they are noun phrases but sometimes used in a proverbial way. But I think this should be glossed as an idion and a noun, as it was before Brian's edit.

It's the same with things like 1LDK We don't include that in the "meanings" because it's not actually English (unlike "AIDS", etc.) I don't think it's appropriate to try putting straight Latin (or Greek or whatever) characters in the "Kanji" field. Better that apps and sites that use the data take on the issue of searching for these sorts of strings.
I'll leave this open for a bit in case there's more discussion.

I was trying to find out what the "JK" was in the two referenced articles as I'd not run across it before. I finally had to do a Google search to find out what it meant. This would make it so people can find this entry. The full-size romaji JK doesn't map to JK (though you might be able to modify the database so all full size romaji mapped to half size), so I had to look elsewhere until I found out it meant 女子高生. I tried searching in English and in Japanese. Problem being that I'm not always using a system that has Japanese installed, so I can't always search using full size romaji. Also, even the Japanese don't always use the full size romaji, as shown in the example references.

  Comments:
I think we can stick with 女子高生 as the source.
WRT the romanization style, (a) we usually stick to modified Hepburn in entries, and (b) the kunrei and wapuro styles of romanization would result in J and K as well.

I restored that gloss because:
(a) it seemed justified by the reference in the 2020 submission
(b) I couldn't see where you justified its removal (*)
It's no big deal, and I'm happy to leave it off.

(*) I need to point out that long and rambling comments and voluminous (and often not very relevant) references in these submissions are not a lot of help to the people trying to edit them, and often result in them being left until later. I, and I suspect others, would be helped if the comments and references were more focussed and succinct.

The sited GG5 glosses basically confirm what I added, and didn't say anything about surprise attacks.

"perform a surprise attack" looks like a hand-written gloss at the time of the original submission, without any dictionary support or consideration of existing J-E translations (the forum was a discussion among Chinese and Japanese speakers). I'm not trying to be antagonistic about the addition of this entry (I wouldn't have found this term had it not been submitted), but it just seems like an inaccurate, and ultimately misleading gloss.

「ずっと日本が押していて良い流れだったのに、一瞬の隙をつかれ、点を取られてしまった」はなんと言えばいいでしょうか?
Japan was in control of the game from the beginning.
But the opponent caught Japan off guard and got one point. (NOTE: uses 一瞬の)

Question about about the difference between this, and 隙を狙う (which we don't have, and maybe might add)
https://hinative.com/questions/14408944
answer:
yes, very similar.
but 隙をつく…more short time ?
隙をつく
隙をねらう
also we have a expression
「一瞬の隙をつく」
but both 隙をつくand 隙をねらう…are very similar, indeed.

一瞬 variant:
隙を突いて	21530
一瞬の隙を突いて	4310
隙を狙う
一瞬の隙を狙う	123

Kanji use(used て form because this dominates):

隙を突いて	21530	37.5%
すきをついて	2248	3.9%
すきを突いて	742	1.3%
  Comments:
new glosses are consistent with huixing's original Japanese definition, as well as various other online 和英 glosses (see references).

Some carefully worded translations on reverso also morph this into "take advantage of the opportunity", but this leverages the surrounding context.
"took advantage of the sudden vacuum in military forces in the capital created by Kiyomori's departure",
where the "sudden lack of forces" is the opportunity/隙. (a gap in the usual defenses)

"to take advantage of a lapse in security/attention/etc".

Reverso has a particular tech example about "anyone being able to connect to your modem remotely, due to a lack of any firewall or network security". (the lack of security being the 隙).

The て form n-grams dominate. I think this is the pre-amble to the actual attack, something like "having taken advantage of a moment of inattention.... [attack, sneak in, sneak out, steal their wallet]"

Removed "someone" from "to catch someone off guard" just before posting. Can be a person, a cat, an army, a nation,...

Moved the more-literal gloss to the first position, as it most closely aligns with the grammatical structure. (explain gap),その隙を突いて, or (gap qualifiersの)隙をついて。

The 一瞬の隙 version seems more clearly "a momentary lapse in attention..." "when the opponent dropped his guard for only a second..."
... maybe also consider adding 一瞬の隙を突く, 隙を狙う.

Just for fun, I asked ChatGPT what this yoji means. It responded:
---
The Japanese term 急功近利 (kyūkōkinkuri) can be translated to "haste makes waste" or "short-term gain, long-term loss" in English. It is a proverbial expression that warns against seeking quick and easy solutions, shortcuts, or profits that may lead to negative consequences in the future. The term emphasizes the importance of taking a long-term perspective, working diligently, and making sound, well-informed decisions that consider the potential consequences and benefits over time.
---
Interesting.

For yojijukugo, if it's neither common nor in the major refs (JEs/kokugos), I don't think it's worth adding. I'd reject this one.

We had all of these but this one(マウスリンス):

https://www.ito-sika.com/blog/?p=57908#:~:text=含嗽剤は、基本的,こと」となっています。

I guess a few mfrs decided to stick this on their bottles. Here's one of several on Amazon:
スミガキマウスリンス
https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B09TKC1Y46/

マウスウォッシュ	21195	16.2%
マウスリンス	194	0.1%
デンタルリンス	8583	6.6%
  Comments:
This is a clone of the デンタルリンス entry.

Saw this on a dentists list of "things mouthwash is commonly marketed as", confirmed on Amazon. Rare in n-grams (unless this has become particularly trendy lately).

Don't care if [rare] is added, but I think the standard xref does the job. It's been 10 years since the n-grams were collected, and it's a marketing buzzword. If a modern dentist listed it, it's probably well-enough understood, and it's on several products in the category.
