"aligning" with suggested changes to 雑然とした (apologies, all the refs went over there).

Recommend the current 雑然とした entry be deleted. Instead, copied a "とした" note from another entry. Not sure how I feel about this. (Well, in fact I think it would be useful if these notes were used *more* often, but I think most する [adv-to] entries that could have such a note do not, so...).

I moved "messy" further back because it is ambiguous in English (can imply filth, a messy plate, or a room with food containers everywhere). Pushing it back down the list surrounds it with terms indicating that this is primarily about disorder.

I'd never heard the term "higgledy-piggledy", but that's on me. I'm surprised at how common it looks googling around. Even so, I don't think it matches the tenor of this term. Perhaps it would be a better gloss on something like めちゃくちゃな? (suggestion found on weblio). I'd be cautious though, as I think 雑然 and めちゃくちゃ are universally comprehensible (as are all of the glosses above), while higgledy-piggledy is maybe idiomatic, and a Japanese person maybe shouldn't be encouraged to use it as a J->E gloss without warning.

If you are all confident I'm the only one who doesn't know this term, then I understand if you put it back :)

Between jisho.org's last snapshot(quite dated) and now, "Japanese Cutlery" was renamed to "Japanese Kitchen Knife".
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_kitchen_knife
  Comments:
This is not about the meaning of the Japanese word. This is about the E->J direction, and the English word "cutlery", which 50 years ago in the U.S. broadly meant "kitchen knives", and no longer does. (and perhaps never did in Britain).

If you search "cutlery", you get two results:
1. This term 刃物, and "cutlery" with a big green sign (on jisho.org anyway) that says "common, use me, you can't go wrong here".
2. Then, among a bunch of rare katakana terms, you see カトラリー, not distinguished in any way.

Which to pick? I gave reverso examples of people doing this wrong. I did this wrong.

In English, the etymology of "cutlery" has "cut" and likely referred to knives. So, shouldn't it be reasonable to think that 刃物 could have also undergone such a transformation and now apply to other metal implements (or even plastic tableware by extension)?

I think this is an unnecessary source of errors when a few words could be added to sort this out. I don't know what those words would be, or the best way to insert them, but it seems like something could be done.

As long as "cutlery" is in the gloss ( which is fine ), I think the [xref] is critical, because 刃物 is the *wrong* word (E->J) for cutlery in many modern use cases.

If you're Japanese, incidentally, "cutlery" is probably a poor choice today for 刃物 for all the reasons above.

Only marked [2] as rare, because if you want to say "appearance of the laity", I guess this is how you'd do it. (It's no more rare than what you want to express)

But I'm sure [1] is not exactly common either.

I only have the daijs sentry, which says 僧でない. Absent evidence to the contrary, I suspect any gloss of "vulgar" is misplaced in modern English. Likely this was intended with the dated meaning: "characteristic of or belonging to ordinary people." This will not be a common interpretation of vulgar today.

There are only 16 entries in all of jmdictdb that end with とした(and half of those are coincidental, and not とする forms at all). A number of others should probably also be dropped in deference to an [adv-to] parent entry. I don't think there is anything particularly special about this entry statistically.

Otherwise there are a mountain of とした forms that could be added.

「This downtown area has a cluttered atmosphere. 」

Does not apply to people (it would seem). If you search 雑然とした男, you find 雑然とした男の部屋.

Figured out "chaotic" from context, but later found that dictionaries back it up. 雑然とした雰囲気 is a common collocation.

Note: 雑然 is marked [adv-to], that means it literally subsumes this entire entry. This can ban be deleted.

推定相続人とは、「現時点で相続する権利のある人」を指します。
A presumptive heir is the one with the right to inherit at present. Seems like the correct match.
  Comments:
At least in the monarchical context, the presumptive heir is an heir who may lose their claim do to birth of another child in the family (such as a newborn son trumping an older sister).

The heir apparent cannot be trumped in this way, and basically only loses their claim if they die first. (my limited, briefly researched understanding)

Although, reverso matches talk a lot about disinheritance of a presumptive heir(such as an eldest child).

Original ref was: 粗末な食物。粗食。菜食。そしい。そしいい
The fact that 菜食 may mean "vegetable meal", but I don't think that was meant to indicate anything strict in the "vegetarian" sense. Just "cheap" (no meat, maybe no rice?). Not a term used by modern vegetarians.

Because it is rare, and not in use, I don't think there is any benefit to xrefs.

  Refs:
Brian raised a topic on Github ([JMdictProject/JMdictIssues] Allowing inclusion of common road signage / placards as idiomatic (Issue #92)) arguing for including this as an entry.

My issue with 熊没出注意 is that it is 1) not to my knowledge officially used on road signage but on trail heads and the like (though I don't live in bear country and could be misinformed), and 2) is one of several forms used, albeit the most common in the ngrams at a combined 58%, 3) very compositional where 熊 could be replaced by any other animal you might want to warn for. That said looking at the ngrams and google images it's at least 90x more common than 猿/サル出没注意 so this point might be moot.

熊注意	3182	13.6%
熊出没注意	11851	50.8%
熊に注意	3472	14.9%
クマ注意	915	3.9%
クマ出没注意	1670	7.2%
クマに注意	2237	9.6%

It is true that adding it to JMdict would mean it would likely pop up at the top for searches for 熊出没注意 英語, but Tatoeba sentences are also indexed by services like Weblio so adding it there instead of here, as I suggested when deleting this, should have much the same effect.

We have "heir(s) presumptive", so aught to have this.
