Comments: | Several years ago we dropped the 行ける form from the いける entry (only GG5 had it). It's been pointed out to me that none of the JEs or kokugos has 行けない in their いけない entries. Should we drop it from here (and also from 行けません)? An issue would be the reindexing of the ~600 sentences. |

Comments: | I heard it in a TV show airing as ビップ, so was wondering if this pronunciation is more common nowadays, but my attempt at researching was inconclusive. The kokugos prefer ブイアイピー, having ビップ as a redirect. Forvo has the pronunciation as individual letters, while Youglish only has four samples, not enough to base a conclusion on (1 ブイアイピー; 2 ビップ; 1 duplicate video). Probably the most that can be said unless the refs change is that the more formal pronunciation is ブイアイピー, but ビップ is also common. [btw, the eigobu source claims there's a slang sense meaning "to ride in a back seat of a car although the passenger seat is available"] |

|
Comments: | This is also a proposed change to the common, synonymous term 意思疎通. Just happened to see this one first. I'm going to hand this off and see what everyone else thinks... A lot of changes are involved here. Current state of jmdict: 意志の疎通 this entry 意志疎通 missing (almost exactly the same popularity) 意思疎通 has an entry, marked common 意思の疎通 no entry, 3x as common as this entry, but 1/4 as common as 意思疎通. Much of the issue is 志 vs 思, and much is about being perhaps overly literal in the glosses. My opinion is that the old glosses should not come back. I have not yet encountered a case where they would be a better fit than "communication". (*possibly* idiomatically in 意思の疎通を図る, it could imply something about reaching some mutual understanding, not sure) The references section explains why I think "communication" is the "correct" gloss. 意思疎通 redirects to コミュニケーション on wikipedia, a Japanese article on the difference between 意思疎通 and コミュニケーション seems to say "not a whole lot of difference really". reverso glosses (there are a *lot* of examples) are almost entirely "communication", and where "mutual understanding" as used, they read as poor translations of Japanese original text. With regard to the 思/志 issue, I think my vote would be to squash 意思の疎通 and 意志の疎通 into one entry, even though 意思 and 意志 are separate. If there is any meaningful nuance we think can be teased out, I think it would be most helpful to appear as an explicit note. The glosses are identical ("communication"), so that's not going to clear much up if these are separate entries. Anyone who sees one term would benefit from seeing the other, and if we break apart the entries that just becomes more of a mess. While the shingakunet reference indicates 意志 may be preferred in serious matters, with 志 at 12% one has to imagine that Japanese people are a little flexible with these forms in practice. (certainly I see 意志 used for "picking up veggies from the grocery store on the way home" on twitter, not just matters of life and death) So, in the end, one entry with の, points to a main entry without の, identical glosses on each, with a note on any concrete difference in nuance that can be teased out. My 2c. === Note: google translates all of these terms, and コミュニケーション as "communication" pretty much 100% of the time, which makes it kind of useless for translating an article on the difference between 意思の疎通 and 意志の疎通, or 意思の疎通 and コミュニケーション... === Originally came here to remove "agreement of wills". This is tinted by my personal experience, but I am coincidentally familiar with the fact that "agreement of wills" (between husband and wife, for example), is a critical aspect of estate planning. Outside of that, I don't think this is a common English expression. The source for "agreement of wills" appears to be a poor tatoeba J->E translation. (refs) === Final note: my [note] is not super-well-researched - kind of a proof-of-concept "first stab" at it. I have not asked for Japanese confirmation. It seems "about right" at the moment, but that's it. Happy ask around if that would be helpful. |

|
7. | A* 2022-11-16 05:06:04 Stephen Kraus <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I don't think "alienation" should be the leading gloss. It's likely to be confused with the emotion (疎外感, entry 1396720) rather than the act of alienating someone. |

Comments: | While I appreciate the time and effort you're putting into this, I don't think this series of edits improve the entry. The kokugos define sense 2 as ある程度/段階/状態を通/時期を通り越す/通過. In their examples they use 少女趣味/漫画/マンガ本/ボウリング通い/恋愛, etc.. I don't think it makes sense to squeeze in "leave a company" there rather than group it in with "leave an idol group". Additionally I think your note and disambiguation go into too much detail and overcrowd the entry. |

Comments: | Sigh, not "post-dates...". To correct my last thought: I think the modern usage of 卒業 as a euphemism for leaving a company (as in the nikkei article's 「今春、○○(会社名)を卒業させて頂くことになりました」)is newer than (and probably partially inspired by) the JPOP usage. But it is also consistent with a softening application of gloss [2]. |

Comments: | Disconnecting the sense of this term from the xref. "slim" has a strong "healthy" connotation, which this term seems to lack, and "slim" is also by far the most common gloss for the xref. We could put 100 synonyms for "thin" on this gloss, but it doesn't seem like "slim" has any special association with this term. This isn't quite [rare], perhaps, but it is quite uncommon. It is not in sankoku. More than half of its uses are in the 4-character compound 長身痩躯 (a reference explicitly pointed this out, saying it's almost exclusively used in the 4-character-compound, but this seems like a little bit of an overstatement). 「痩躯」は単独で用いることは少なく「長身痩躯」と四字熟語に変えて使用していきます。 jmdict doesn't usually link 4-character-compound components back to the compound (燕雀 and 鴻鵠 do not point at 燕雀鴻鵠, even though that might be their primary use), but in this case the connotation of the person indicated by 痩躯 is often tied to that indicated by 長身痩躯, and 長身痩躯 might frequently be more useful to the person examining this entry. |

5. | A* 2023-03-09 04:48:42 Brian Krznarich <...address hidden...>
Comments: | The reason for at least one xref is not explanatory, it is this is not the best term for "deify". 神格化 seams to be objectively preferable in terms of nuance and n-gram counts. If you search jmdict for "deify" today, this is the only term that comes up. This is misleading as an E->J entry. There are a number of xrefs of in jmdict of the form: [rare term] -> [probably what you actually want] For deify, "神と崇める" isn't rare, but "神格化" is "probably what you actually want" if you got here by searching "deify". I'm not sure if there is any practical remedy to this when all of the "deify" terms are under "deification". It's certainly not a problem limited to this entry though, I don't know if there is a practical solution. |

|
Comments: | I guess one can revere without worshipping, but "worship as a god" is more common in English. I was going to discuss deletion, and suggest the removal of "to deify" as a gloss, because I think the xref terms are better. Instead, I am going to advocate for keeping all of the higher-n-gram xrefs to "cheat". The xrefs are often [vs] forms, and are listed under "deification", making them pretty much undiscoverable. (search for "deify", you'll never find them). By adding these xrefs from a simple, understandable, common-enough-but less-common form, we expose all of the other "deify" entries to anyone doing such a search. |

|
Comments: | Aligning with update to 痩躯. Gloss with a slightly more positive connotation. Wasn't easy to verify with a real x-ref. Searched 長身痩躯 on wikipedia, and looked for "tall" in English-xrefed articles. Often applied to tall baseball players, but fairly non-specific. Usually omitted entirely in English. After that, usually glossed simply as "tall", as the slender bit is kind of implied and not-so-critical I guess. Perhaps 長身痩躯 is just more efficient to throw around in Japanese. Interesting term. And even though I dropped it from 長身, I also found "slim" as a gloss when describing a particular vampire's physique. But really, I think the author has a wide berth to do what they want with this. |

Comments: | Aligning with 去る者は日々に疎し. In spite of n-grams, the "grammatically modern" form with は seems to be the best form to learn. Google news is a small, dead draw. On twitter, 去る者日々に疎し has about 13 hits this year. は is somewhere north of 100. Reference materials (some at least) head with the は form. Imdas has only は. Could xref both [1] and [2], but it looks like we avoid the double ref in these simple cases? |

If we want to keep it anyway, it should get an xref back in the other direction to 芯ケース. (I grant that in a vacuum, if you saw 芯のケース in a novel, even with the glosses for 芯 this would be difficult to guess if you didn't already know). |

Comments: | It appears that something reporting numbers back in 2011 was off, because comments are tied together with this and the xref'ed entry. This seems to be the dominant form(confirming the n-grams, search Amazon and the の form won't appear hardly anywhere on a product listing). Confirmed by twitter. People who use の tend no not abbreviate other parts as well, such as... シャーペンの芯のケース Interesting Is this [abbr] if it is the dominant form? シャー芯ケース , or something even longer, would seem to be the etymological root. |

Comments: | I was trying to find out what the "JK" was in the two referenced articles as I'd not run across it before. I finally had to do a Google search to find out what it meant. This would make it so people can find this entry. The full-size romaji JK doesn't map to JK (though you might be able to modify the database so all full size romaji mapped to half size), so I had to look elsewhere until I found out it meant 女子高生. I tried searching in English and in Japanese. Problem being that I'm not always using a system that has Japanese installed, so I can't always search using full size romaji. Also, even the Japanese don't always use the full size romaji, as shown in the example references. |

Comments: | I think we can stick with 女子高生 as the source. WRT the romanization style, (a) we usually stick to modified Hepburn in entries, and (b) the kunrei and wapuro styles of romanization would result in J and K as well. |

One from the year 528. On a quote from buddhist principles in the 7th century (with inlined explanation of the term (肉食をしない). The fourth hit isn't really a hit, it's the name of a Chinese reference. |
|
Comments: | This word is in modern use in Taiwan(at least). That alone is enough to sneak it into the n-gram corpus (Chinese people talking about Japan, Japanese people talking about Taiwanese terms). Are there kokugo refs for this? (精選版 日本国語大辞典 is nikk, right, the one that doesn't count on its own?) Does not appear to be a Japanese word. Google hits: all Chinese |

|
Comments: | Exceedingly rare. daijs says 粗末な食物. wordsense gloss seems perfect. Original ref was: 粗末な食物。粗食。菜食。そしい。そしいい The fact that 菜食 may mean "vegetable meal", but I don't think that was meant to indicate anything strict in the "vegetarian" sense. Just "cheap" (no meat, maybe no rice?). Not a term used by modern vegetarians. Because it is rare, and not in use, I don't think there is any benefit to xrefs. |
