Comments: | added katakana, changed gloss, trying to align with どす[3]. I have the proviso on "dark": "( thoughts, etc. )", because I think "dark" would be inadequate if considered as a color alone. "darkish" and "dusky" don't seem to align with the entry for どす, and don't seem to match google image search results. I see oily black in a lot in images... Collocations include どす黒い血, どす黒い感情, どす黒いオーラ ドス黒い陰謀 "Dark" as a metaphor seems to be correct for どす黒い感情. There is a now-popular book titled GACKTのドス黒いメンタリズム Reverso has one example ドス黒い曲 = "thick dark songs" Maybe there is a better gloss, but I don't want to get carried away. Linked back to どす to let the reader see the various nuances... |

I've only just now seen usage [note] tags here and there, and *just now* realized the "Sense note" field in "advanced search" lets you find existing examples. The [note] is a better approach than what I did. And sorry, yes, I was as bit uncomfortable calling that gloss [lit]. I will not do that in the future. I see the mailing list is posted online, I'll make an effort to read through things and catch up, especially on NG. |

Comments: | We use adj-i in cases like this because we want sites/apps to be able to handle inflected forms. Separating inflectional information from PoS tags is something that's been proposed for JMdict: NG. See the link above. I think ellipses used in conjunction with a note help to show how this expression is used. Transitivity tags are not used on expressions. 手がつかない would need to be a separate entry. A lit gloss should be a word-for-word translation. It wouldn't be helpful here. |

Comments: | Small change, I think "focus" is a better gloss for the meaning I've suggested. "unable to focus on work" vs. "unable to concentrate on work", this is mostly stylistic, I think, but google counts seem to roughly support this intuition. If this were treated as [vi], it really should be "to be unable to focus". And perhaps [lit] (said of something) to not hold one's attention If this is merely [adj-i], how do we get from here to 仕事が手につきません... ====== sankoku and daijs both use 集中 (concentration (on a task); focusing one's attention) nikk uses 身が入らない (can't: to give one's everything; to make one's best effort; to be enthused; to put your back into it) |

Comments: | The entire definition in daijisen is 2 「風樹の嘆」に同じ。 This is not consistent across all dictionaries, so I went with the "particularly" option. But, given the daijisen entry, I think the derivation is probably from 風樹の嘆 backwards to 風樹, rather than the other way around (as it appears before this edit). I think the swaying trees are tied up in some sense of melancholy or regret. |

Comments: | Summary - from what I can find, at least, it appears that [1] and [2] are far and away predominantly katakana. For [3], hiragana wins out, but not by a huge margin, and [see=どす黒い] removes that ambiguity. [4] is very different from the other terms, and has a restriction already. Counts don't appear to be influenced significantly by DOS/MS-DOS. [2] generally dominates the other counts, [1] is relatively rare in general. (should these be re-ordered?). Note, for example, 短刀 gets a whole wikipedia page, on which ドス get's a short paragraph. yourei examples are all (or almost all) 脅す sense. == I changed the ドス /どす ordering after editing ドスのきいた. I won't post the long list, but if you do an n-gram search for the top 10/100 entries for ドスの and どすの You'll see that first, the list is absolutely overwhelmed by the 脅す meaning(using 効かす・利かせる and even the mistaken 聞かせる), and second, ドス is the dominant form. ドスを and どすを are similarly overwhelmed by a grammatical variation of the same structure. For the knife, while even sankoku lists primarily under どす, I suspect this is a reflection of it being a "native" and historical Japanese word. I don't know if they would ever handle such a case with ドス(「どす」とも書く). It actually appears rare that ms-dos was written as ドス. the wikipedia page for ドス doesn't even list DOS or MS-DOS as disambiguation options. Google "ドスソフト" or "ドス・ソフト" or "ドスのソフト" and you get almost nothing. Replace with "DOSソフト" or "DOSのソフト" or "MS-DOSソフト" and you'll get results. It seems the trendy thing for Japanese people to do might have been to use the English acronym, like DVD etc. |

Comments: | See usage examples in xref 2700790. Sorry for the long list. I saw that there was a previous discussion about creating this stand-alone vs. only including ドスの効いた声, with the latter winning out. It looked to me that there was enough evidence (and now dictionary support) for a more generic entry, so I was attempting to show the actual variety of terms it appeared in. In any case, the list should have gone here, not there. I was trying to ask "does this warrant an entry", but I could have just done that here. I will avoid such long lists in the future in any case. |
